Tangled is probably one of the few times Disney were actually able to actually emote something without words in one of their CG films, so I gotta give them credit for that.

I'd also rate See The Light over Let It Go as an overall scene.

It's one of my personal favorite Disney films of all time.

They're trying too hard to make their animated female characters perfect. Elsa and Anna have smushed tiny faces, weird non-existent noses, and alien slanted eyes, with literally no flaws or expressiveness. Tangled felt more genuine to me. It FELT like they were aiming at recapturing what made Disney Princess Fairy Tale movies so wonderful, timeless and endearing.

It was only after that I learned WHY. Disney wanted to basically make Shrekpunzel out of it and after a couple awful first attempts, Glen Keane quit trying to make it a movie about subverting fairy tale tropes and make it a genuine heartfelt fairy tale movie.

I wonder if part of it is because the image of the "Disney Princess" has gotten a lot more cutesy and sparkly over the past 3 years or so? More glitter, more bland, more "safe."

This is his quote, by the way. In context he is talking about how female characters are expected to stick to a certain model dictated by the studios.

My husband animated on frozen, but from what I recall the leads were really really picky about characters being visually appealing in that movie (with the angle of the face, more than usual) and those folds kinda muck up the "pretty" face by casting the shadow. Not so much laziness, just people in charge having a certain mindset for what they wanted to see and enforcing it a little too much.

John Silver was a pirate captain who possibly killed the guy who gave Jim the map, but over the time grew to bond with the fatherless and moody Jim and being torn between living up to his asshole crew (Especially that creepy spider/scorpion/crab fucker.) and helping Jim.

If anything, TP was more of a drama film that the idiot moviegoers failed to get.

This is probably the only CG Disney movie so far that I love. Not that CG = bad, more that Disney's output since Chicken Little hasn't really resonated with me except for this one. It's easily my favorite Princess movie, rewatched it a few weeks ago and it's still just as good today as it was when it came out.

I'm not going to lie, I'm real bitter that Frozen is the princess movie that became a runaway success and not this one. Though I suppose the silver lining there is that I'm not being beaten to death with Tangled merch EVERYWHERE. Fuck Frozen!!

Sometimes I feel the same, but I have to remind myself that Disney's name was mud as far as movie quality at that point. They'd come of like a 10 year string of bad to mediocre films and PatF, the movie that was supposed to be their big comeback had fallen rather flat at the Box office. No one, not even Disney was expecting Tangled to do much. It was ultimately released to try to recoup some of the losses from it's massive $260 million dollar budget.

Then it was a substantial success, despite the horrific trailers, and bad rep that Disney had. And before the year was out, Disney was scrambling to get Rapunzel into their Princess Line of merch.

Then Wreck-it Ralph was a success as well, and I like to think those two things contributed greatly to the success of Frozen.
