You know, I wonder how happy Dipper would have been with Ford in the long term. Dipper likes the idea of the Author, sure, and he seems happy enough to read about Ford's discoveries in the Journals and apply the knowledge to his own adventures.

But it occurs to me that he hasn't approached exploring the supernatural in Gravity Falls the same way as Ford did. Ford was all about methodical research and cataloguing his findings. Knowledge for knowledge's sake. Dipper, however, was more intrigued by going out and applying Ford's knowledge for his own benefit than he was by the prospect of studying the anomalies himself. Knowledge for utility's sake.

Not to mention he was far more interested in pursuing the Author behind the Journals than anything else, which might reflect his bent towards uncovering conspiracies and telling stories rather than scientific investigation.

In some ways, Dipper isn't really cut out to be Ford's successor as is. Despite his action oriented fighting skills, if given a choice Ford locks himself up in his lab for hours and isolates himself from society. Dipper, on the other hand, craves friendship and recognition. And he himself pointed out how ridiculous the idea of spending his teen years shut up in a lab was.

I get the impression he'd miss what he'd stand to lose by choosing to be homeschooled by Ford.

I think we know that this was a weak episode. Not only was it weak in the final arc, but it stands weak overall. Season 2B has been a letdown, and while I'm not saying the episodes have been bad, they've been consistently mediocre.

Maybe I've subconsciously lowered my expectations, particularly since it was confirmed we had two episodes left, but I wasn't disappointed by this.

I guess at the end of the day, I realize it's a kid's show (not to mention a DISNEY kid's show,) and all the crazy, smart stuff they've built up and gotten away with, would ultimately conclude with at least some form of "the power of love."

The whole dynamic between Dipper and Mabel is meant to juxtapose that of Ford and Stan. They aren't making the same mistakes. Mabel thought she wanted a world where all her dreams were true and she could even craft her ideal Dipper, when the real Dipper means more to her than any of that, because he always stood by her and supported her dreams. Dipper thought he wanted the respect and admiration of being Ford's #2, when he's always gotten it from Mabel at the end of the day.

Yeah, it's hard to deny that Dip's taken the shit across the series, especially when it came to giving things up for Mabel. That part wasn't always thought out very well, and, much like Dip's infatuation with Wendy, wouldn't have been so bad had it not been so frequent. But the bond between twins and family and friends was always the underlying theme of this show, along with "you don't have to grow up just because you get older." So, considering all that, I don't mind the way Dipper and Mabel got back on the same page.

It ain't perfect, but I liked it better than some of the recent ones. Rushed, sure, but not awful. We'll see how it truly ends.

The only thing I disliked about this episode was despite everything Dipper, Wendy, and Soos went through, Mabel was safe, blissfully unaware of everything and even appeared to be annoyed that Dipper came. Dipper going days without seeing anyone he knew, surrounded by monsters, capable of dying at any second because of some random thing happening, his only comfort during these times is the walkie-talkie he and Mabel share that he desperately tries to communicate to her with, only to be greeted by a perfectly unharmed Mabel who wasn't even worried about him to the point of conjuring a replacement version of him that represents what she wishes real Dipper was really REALLY rubbed me the wrong way.

All I'm saying is, she'd better get fucking GRILLED for like 10 minutes non-stop to make up for all the shit she's done and hasn't payed for.

We've been trying to figure out the significance of the symbols on Bill's summoning wheel, and whether it will play a role in the finale.

One theory is that the people who are associated with the symbols are the key to defeating Bill somehow.

A spin off of that is the idea that nothing supernatural in Weirdmageddon can affect those characters except for Bill himself. E.g. Soos (Question Mark) was unchanged by the wave of weirdness that turned Abuelita into a chair, Bill had to trap Mabel (Shooting Star) instead of petrifying her, and he also had to gild Ford (the Hand) himself. Up till now, everyone speculated to be one of the Wheel characters was either safe, MIA, or captured directly by Bill.

So seeing Robbie (presumably the Heart) captured by Bill's minions and petrified along with the other townspeople cast doubt on the both theories. It might be that Robbie won't be available for the final showdown with Bill, and it looks like he doesn't have any special protection from the Oddpocalypse.

Alright, lotta salt over this. Understandable. So how about an alternate path to (mostly) the same conclusion:

Dipper's the smart, sensible, non-whimsical one, so how about he actually embraces it this time? "Who am I kidding? Maybe Mabel's right?" All he's ever done to try and make things better has always led them to get worse. He DOES go to Mabel and asks to be older. He becomes older. He starts making out with Wendy, or rather, a dream version of Wendy.

But hey, isn't that what Mabel DIDN'T want this entire time? Not Dipper's object happiness or for him to be with her, of course, but for him not to leave her behind. That's the whole reason she ultimately hated whenever Dipper tried to impress Wendy and why they fought over Ford's offer after all.

And hey, he's not her dorky twin brother anymore. He's some creepy older guy sucking face with a fake version of her friend (bonus, let the real Wendy get skeeved out by it.) Mabel realizes this just a fantasy. Dip's happy, but only because he gave up. Same as she did. That's not the Dipper she knows. That's not the REAL Dipper. That's the difference between fantasy and reality. Real Dip has always done the right thing, even when it hurt him. Mostly when it did, and usually for her benefit.

So Mabel takes away the fantasy, and Dip is angry, until she explains herself. Dipper brings up all those bad times and Mabel's the one who reminds him of the good. They surpassed them because they were together and not a single one of them could do that. They agree to burst the bubble together and Dipper stands by what he said about not taking Ford's offer, because they promised not to go stupid together, like they do everything together.

Dip needs her to remind him he's more than a brainy dork and Mabel needs him to remind her she's more than a ditzy dreamer. To be happy in spite of the other isn't true happiness. It's just a fantasy. That's the power of family. Power of love. Circle of life dog. Hakuna matata.
