No mention of Azula yet but I'm guessing she has to be connected to this whole thing somehow. I don't think the kidnappers are real spirits given what we've seen.

I know that but it seems very awkward to place the translation there instead of not just having Aang explain to the siblings and the reader what the letter said.
Zuko's letter wasn't particularly detailed or revealing, Aang could have just said "Spirits are attacking the Fire Nation". Instead, we have a translation that explains what's what to the reader, but not Sokka and Katara. Then you have Katara assuming that Aang has to go to the Fire Nation without being told, though she could have deduced that from knowing the letter was from Zuko. Then you have Sokka all of a sudden knowing that it's "Spirit World stuff" even though he hasn't been told that.
It just seems a needlessly awkward way to handle very simple information.

So what do people think the Water Tribe story's going to be about?

It just doesn't seem reasonable for Azula to kidnap children to punish Mai's dad, who she believes is incompetent (we know this from the original series). In fact it seems unreasonable for him to even try and use him.

I just can't see how she'll relate to the plot in any meaningful way.

I think she's confirmed to be present in Part 3 at least.
I thought that maybe she'd show up there as a lead into a series about her, but if the next trilogy is about Katara and Sokka, then I imagine Azula's presence is connected to the current plot.

She winds up reconciling with Zuko, Ursa, and even "His Royal Tea-Drinking Kookiness"? She rejects her father and his ways? Faces the Dragons and comes out unharmed yet changed? Then she and Tylee reunite, express their deep, gay, lesbian love for one another, and are married under the countenance of the Avatar?
