So happy how these ads are doing. One of my side ads is fetching over $1 a day. Even if it drops all my ads should net at least $1 and it only goes up everyday. Not to mention the updates through this week should make some people come back for more and I don't have spend money out the ass ($10-$15 a day). I'm hoping I can drop down to about $5 a day and slowly get that much money back and maybe even turn a profit after some time. And then there's the growing money I'm getting from being a Hub affiliate (20 cents a day and growing).

Feels good man.

The first issue is there to introduce the family and give the reader an idea of what Miss Melee is capable of, as well as showcase the high-caliber action our comic is capable of. Issue 2 and 3 in particular will delve more into the inter-character dynamics, and those will provide the emotional hook.

I'm actually a big proponent of a work being able to hook me right away, so don't think I'm taking your comment lightly or ignoring it. I give comics one issue to impress me, and I give TV shows one episode to impress me, and if they can't do something to get me hooked in that time I don't bother with them, so I can absolutely see where you're coming from on your comments about it lacking emotional hooks, although I feel the action itself is the hook, at least at this stage where the reader doesn't know a whole lot about the characters.

I would hope the action is easy to understand in of itself as one of the primary strengths of this comic is the quality of the action, at least that's our intention.

A whole issue? I guarantee when it comes to web comics most people go only a couple pages in before passing judgement. Myself included. If the author knows what they're doing then it's good from the get go. First impressions are absolutely everything, especially when there's so much garbage on the internet.
>>
>>77667809
Every sentence I read of this post became wrong-er than the last one. You are no older than 21. I can tell.

If I cared strongly enough I would advise everyone to ignore your advice. But I do not.

Although I guess I did type that out. And then post this.
>>
>>77667809
I was referring to print comics, not webcomics. With webcomics obviously it's a whole different ball game given how they're consumed differently than printed comics. I really haven't read enough webcomics myself to have a specific threshold for sticking with it or abandoning it, with webcomics I've always played it by feel.

>If the author knows what they're doing then it's good from the get go
I really hope I know what I'm doing, and it feels to me like I know what I'm doing, I mean I've planned things out and I've analyzed and re-analyzed my scripts and plans, but that's not my call to make. My expectations for my comic's readership are very low, especially this early in the game, and so far from looking at my website stats my approximate readership has exceeded my expectations, but I could always screw things up and kill my comic so I have to be ever vigilant.
>>
>>77667809
>If the author knows what they're doing then it's good from the get go.
Not every story is engaging immediately.

I didn't care much for the first parts of Phantom Blood until I realized the sheer scope of the story, forcing me to give the rest of the arc a chance.

There's too many exceptions in your argument for there to be a rule at all.

"Good from the get go" does not mean an action packed super stunning shebang hook. There are good establishing shots and there are bad establishing shots. There are good action sequences and there are bad action sequences. Most webcomic authors just plow forward and don't look back. Too few look at their comic as one complete book, but as a ramble of pages. Remember, a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link.

--That chain being readership and garnering an audience mind you, not strictly the level of quality, but the two are generally close.

i get you, but at the same time i can think of lots of comics that started off shaky and later found their footing (visually, joke-wise, writing, etc) - paranatural (though the pacing got worse as the art improved) and whomp! come to mind.

anyway, i also hope this is true because by the time i'm done with my comic the last pages will look different than those at the beginning - but redrawing pages is a horrible, horrible trap!

That's why you plan the whole thing out. After that, there's nothing saying you have to fill in pages linearly from prologue to epilogue-- you could do them in reverse order (final page to first page) or in a random order (for less pronounced quality shifts), just keep designs, color choices, etc fairly consistent.
>>
>>77669718
yeah true, i wrote this straight ahead with no pre-planning until about halfway through... but that doesn't account necessarily for art that's gonna improve/change. i'm worried my print version will be a trainwreck because of all the variations. oh well!

yeah ive been going at a specific idea for years, and since the beginning ive drifted from my early 'what if?' diversity-from-limitation scenarios to giving internal personalities a chance to form. Sort of from Lemarkism to Darwinism...
A free-form approach has definitely improved the product and i feel like i am able to take the portions required for storytelling while simultaneously letting lands beyond take their own form without resetting the focus.
Now all i gotta do is start, as you've said, commit to the ideas with long-term potentials and get the assembly line rolling.
>>

>the art just gets out of control over time. fucking atomic robo..
What do you mean with gets out of control? I have not read AR
>>
>>77671664
It just gets looser and looser and more and more exaggerated until it's fucking ridiculous. Robo starts out looking like a believable thing Tesla might build, who could reasonably wear human clothes and walk around among people... then he gets more and more gorillalike and the holes in his arms deepen until they become fucking salad bowls that would scrape the skin off of anyone he brushed up next to. His face goes from amazingly expressive for something so simple, to a pair of all-encompassing eyes with a little framing in between

So for starters you started at page 7. The beginning is very important and it'd be best to start with that. Then there's the lineart. It's rough and scratchy and you really really really should try something other than mspaint and a mouse to do them. Next there's all the grammar errors and awkward dialogue. At the very least get someone to edit and work on the dialogue.

Your style is pretty good but the lineart is a constant reminder that you have been given a specific criticism multiple times and have not fixed it. You said you were practicing on gimp and I have told you that you can use anchors and paths without needing a tablet. Once you get that mastered you can produce clean lines and improve your comic drastically.

>Next there's all the grammar errors and awkward dialogue. At the very least get someone to edit and work on the dialogue.
English is not his first language and various people have been helping him with it in previous threads but it really is something he needs to buckle down and improve himself.

I'm just warning you that you are getting to Dewd levels here. When someone is given criticism, doesn't listen, and keeps asking for criticism, everybody else will just ignore them. You don't want to be like that. Look how long until someone actually said something and how many posts were made after you put your comic up.

But the page i post here is close to the one on the site because I'm running out of buffer and I'm in dire need of some guest comics before december 1st.
>>
>>77674793

No Dewd is a good comparison. He Who Shall Not Be Named is below shit tier. Dewd's problem is the same and his improvement has been slow and not amounting to much. I remember a year or two ago I kept telling him to change his font because most of it was unreadable. I kept saying it time and time again and he FINALLY did it.

Then there's the various other things that have been brought up and he doesn't listen to the point where the others in these threads also ignored him.

This is not an environment for those that lack that need to improve and it shows in how the other anons react.
>>
>>77674793
everybody keeps saying this, but i just don't see it. dewd can't draw well consistently... like his sense of color has definitely improved, but his writing and drawing hasn't very much. i know this is "harsh", but it's just not very good. i definitely see dewd being good in the future because he obviously works pretty consistently... it's just a matter of when he decides to study seriously.

>>77675590
i hadn't, sorry. though the art in a comic is a large part of how a story is "read." it's hard to follow because of the way it is written. it seems like the time skips between pages are too big - like all the most interesting stuff is related to us through the narrator or spoken by a character. you tell more than you show. since you have trouble writing it out, you will have to visually illustrate what's going on so readers can follow. i think the premise is interesting, and the designs are cute... it needs to be more cohesive.
>>
>>77675159
What's wrong with the story/ writing? Is it the grammar, or the whole thing in general?

You're kidding, right? You can't even listen to people properly and you want to ignore them and wait until you hear something you like?

You might as well give up if fixing your problems is impossible for you. Your story is garbage because nobody knows what's going on and your characters talk like someone talk a foreign language and ran through a translator a few times before having it spew out in English.

Is that enough for you? You're shit. And it's not because of your comic but because of you. You have flaws and you won't fix them and you act like an ass because of it.

just... the whole thing in general. i figure we're just witnessing your artistic adolescence - your comic is really incoherent and rushed, and as a result reminds me of the sort of stuff my friends and i made in middle school for ourselves.

but anyway - the dialogue is awkward, the crude jokes fall flat, the figures look implausibly and unpleasantly deformed. you've also mentioned this is a hobby for you, so you'd just fix that stuff when it finally (if it ever) bothered you enough to do so.

For me, I don't even know what's going on most of the time. It's pretty much everywhere and seems to lack any coherence. I think part of the reason is that you have a lot of stuff going on and your cast is huge. And the art is pretty sloppy but I see improvements.

The problem here isn't who to listen to for criticism but the problem of listening to nobody's criticism.

Yes there is always that constant lookout for bad advice but when you have a few people saying the same thing over and over again, it's best to listen.

The mindset is usually: They don't know, I know what I'm doing.

Every time someone points out something it's an opportunity to get better or to at least hear what others have to say.

You think getting negative feedback is bad? Getting nothing is worse. I've been there plenty of times. I'll take all forms of shit over being ignored.

You serious? Man, I love my work, but I won't sugar coat it's awful, and I love it because I made it, nothing else.
There are a gazillion better fonts for comics, and you can find a lot of free ones too.

The only thing I can say, based on what you posted is - Do not wait until you think your art is good enough - Jump naked into the pool and make what you want.

If you're not considering going to art school, or taking any class or seminar on illustration in the near future, then get your work done, because there's plenty to learn from this experience, and you're wasting it by waiting for the chance to be better.
Man, the things I'm finding in my archive folder are beyond embarrassment. This is one of the *finest* things I've found there.

The problem with full manga style, at least for me, is that it only works when you do action/adventure.
I made a sappy tearjerker, and while I like it, it felt kinda wrong, so I've been trying to expand my horizons with experimental stories and drawing styles like Judgement, and my current work.
I'm sure as hell I will do manga style again if I ever do something heavily packed with action. I sure miss kinetic lines lol

This is an oldie but goodie life lesson for any artist out there.
>>
>>77676812
>>77677482

Thing is that this is not bad and if that's your old work then you're comparing yourself to those that are struggling with their art now.

It is good to show that even good artists weren't always that way. But you also show awareness to storytelling and and have some style to go with it.

That's what the anons that need help in this thread have to realize. It's not just being able to draw better but writing as well and knowing about how to tell a story properly.
>>
>>77677991
Those two are from 10 years ago. But it's true I'm struggling, because I felt I was too comfy doing only action manga, and I wanted to change.

It's possible that people find more appealing my old work, I can't retort to that nor I want to.

I dunno, maybe I get used to the stuff I'm trying now, and I get not only to improve, but to add new stuff I wouldn't dream of trying 10 years ago.

I've been thinking the "strip" format I use to make my, well, strips, and go back to full page comics. Maybe once I finish this chapter.
>>
>>77677950
well i do like the way your style is a mashup of styles right now. I always mix my animu styles up.. which I justify because a lot of shows do that, you just don't see people talking about it as much. Not everyone in pokemon has the narrow eyes with the slit pupils after all

Funny thing is I don't even make that much money. I just budget myself really well. That and I got a $500 Christmas bonus. In a month I should get one of my old jobs back and that'll put an extra $400 in pocket each month. I'll think about getting another comic or something.

>Why is he even advertising anymore at this point? For better or for worse, Sohmer is one of the "top" webcomic names now.

He's no longer that relevant. Besides, PW has this thing where you have the system automatically bid for you. So I'm guessing his just found my website because it's racking in views and found the cheapest spot to advertise.

So in any case despite paying three artists, owning my own website, and waging an advertising campaign I thought I'd get back to drawing and do a 4-panel nsfw comic about a busty girl in space and gleefully banging anything. And she goes to a space academy. Or is captain of a spaceship. Something.

>Girl: [raises hand] Is it true this class was just made so space orcs can rape young men and women?
>Space Orc Teacher: Looks like we got our first volunteer!
>Space Orc Teacher: Uhh... the best thing is to loosen your body... hngh... and not struggle... the last thing you want is to tighten up your body as a footlong roll of meat forces... ahh... itself into you and... y-you're not supposed to be enjoying this!

Howdy-ho, /co/.
Artist and I just realized we're about three and a half issues away from being done with our first story arc of the Sisters. Which is sort of amazing, given how long we had it in the can and how quickly progress is going on now. Half-way through "The Monster", followed up by "The Secrets" which I got started working on today. It's going to be a nasty ride to the end, which I think I've said before, but will certainly be more apparent in the next few weeks.

Violence abounds.

Feels good to have stuff accomplished.

Probably gonna storytime it all sometime early next month. Still need to get a proper website with better functionality (a cast page would be useful). But we're making strides. Gonna shill the site because I'm gonna grab a meal and won't be back if it is asked of me for at least an hour:

thesisters-comic.com

Might even have time enough to start reviewing stuff again; a happy combination of things turning out okay and not feeling jaded as fuck about the medium.

How're you doing? How's your project going? How is it holding up the closer you get it to a point of completion, in regards to things that helped inspire it and your own personal growth?

The only thing of note in here is the "visits" column which is unique visitors per day. I'm pretty pleased with that performance, especially this early into my comic's life. The number for today seems weirdly low because my host updates the data at weird times so it doesn't reflect however many actual unique visitors I have as of right now in the day and it won't reflect how many actual unique visitors I will have for all of today when it's all said and done.

I've never posted in one of these but here it goes

>in 1943 a chicano older sister/younger brother duo hitch hike from El Paso to San Diego to see their estranged older brother on leave. Along the way they team up with a sarcastic clearly student, an escaped concubine who pushes older sister's buttons, and an autistic man-child who speaks in third person and thinks he's from another planet. It has elements of southwestern psychedelia but also has very down to earth moment that are few and far between.

>A type A schoolgirl wants to become a superheroine in her upper middle class jersey suburb, so she enlist the help of Checkers, an AI free to move to whatever part of the Internet he pleases but takes no physical form. Think Barbra Gordon meets Freakazoid on Omegle.

thanks! i wrote a short synopsis in a previous post, but here's the gist of it:

>eight years have passed since the global war. monarchies have fallen, and petty politics are now re-shaping the world.
>military vets kelly mullens and joseph lane have found a place in this new, rapidly-modernizing world as intelligence agents, working to find relevancy as soldiers once again through close protection, red teams shenanigans, and other high-speed, low drag hijinx.

it's supposed to take place in a fictionalized ace combat strangereal/final fantasy tactics ivalice kind of setting, hence weird terms like the "global war" and such.

>>77696912
thanks. these were drawn some time ago but i will definitely do my best to make her "move" better.
>>
>>77702661
I would have kept it like that, but I just couldn't get it right other than the 3/4 view.

Also, I think the [= makes Annabeth look more obnoxious, which is what I'm going for, and a little bit less cute.

Also, yeah, annabeth doesn't have many teefs.
>>
>>77702807

well i was talking about the.. extra teeth going back. or are those supposed to just be in the back of the mouth like molars? because now I kinda see that, but for a second it looked like a shark's mouth or even a leech's
>>

Yeah, the inside of annabeth's mouth is what you getting a nice look at. All of those teeth aren't in the front.
>>
>>77702911
yeah but i somehow thought they were directly behind the main teeth, in rows, or almost lining the throat, not molar styles. I guess missing teeth will do that, sort of screws up seeing the jaw shape. Well anyway that works

Do you guys draw your comics on an specific size or format?
>>
>>77702978
huh, i never noticed the.. math on those before.. that makes them weirdly fit together in different configurations but still be reassemblable for different print formats. though i guess i'm more used to the non-sunday strips

yeah I do two columns, with as many rows as I end up needing. Usually between three and five. My canvas is set up to comfortably handle about seven rows before I need to enlarge it. thank god for digitalness
originally I just went with 2x2. I've heard a lot of authors espouse it as the best most efficient way to do a gag strip, because it's compact and works vertically or horizontally.
generally though in this day and age you want to stick with vertical scrolling
and always feel free to break your format if need be. my columns never line up exactly, i don't want them to. I let one panel borrow from another all it needs. Only my OCD that still sees negative space as 'wasted' keeps me from not just doing a long vertical series of panels of various sizes and shapes with tons of space in between
>>
>>77702978
Consistency helps the reader become immersed in the story. You can mix it up and do gimmicky stuff but imo that's a tad overdone.

How can I prevent tumblr from accessing my webcomic? It is not written in English, yet somehow a tumbrlina finds my comic to message me about "groundbreaking" designs I have drawn (her words, not mine). She wants to know if she can translate my comic because I have stated previously that I will not. Is it appropriate to say deny her? I am fine with having a minimal amount of readers. I would rather have small readers than tumblr. My English is not the best, but even I can see the crazies on that website.

It looks pretty good. The heroine is cute, but make sure her finished look is also memorable. The name "Urban Tales" is fucking terrible, though. It's bland, forgettable, and tells you nothing about the comic. It sounds like something about gangs, rap music and black people. Work on that. A lot of manga these days use statements or phrases as titles (She is a T-Rex, Sakamoto desu ga?, My Little Sister Can't Be This Cute etc). Maybe a title like that? Something like "My Girlfriend's Grandfather is Himmler?!" It immediately tells readers your comic's unique plot point, and will stick in their mind. Or, if in doubt, maybe just name the comic after your main character.
>>
>>77706855
The issue is I intend the series to be about all sorts of random stuff that happens in an Urban environment, from an inter city private school, to a bunch of hackers living at an abandoned train station. Urban Tales is the only title that was vague enough to go under all of them.
>>
>>77706873

Then I suggest changing the title to [name of the city] Tales. It's not a flashy name, but it's better than the super-generic "Urban Tales". Plus according to Google there's already a comic with that name.

Hey guys. After a week in bed 'cause of the stupid seasonal flu I'm back on the comic, which I have decided to reboot (sort of) on Tapastic. This is the new address.

http://tapastic.com/sreedurra

I've uploaded a first batch of pages and I'll redraw a few things before uploading the rest and catch up to where I was, I really couldn't bear the quality of a few pages.

I'm keeping the art blog on Tumblr and I've cleaned up the history of posts on the previous comic.

I still don't like Tapastic's episode format, but oh well. At least it's a proper platform for webcomics. Is there any way to add imaged to an episode AND make so that they're treated as updates instead of under-the-radar edits?
>>
>>77708040
Could always do a "NEW PAGE//DATE" Episode, and just add the files to the previous pages Episode everytime you update. Not the best system, but it is doable. Had to do that on my comic.

You'll lose the comments/likes, but keep the pageview count for your total.
>>
>>77708479
Yeah this is the current idea. I guess I'll try to break things down by weekly updates as a compromise.
For now I'll have to catch up fast with where the comic was and get the second bunch of pages up.
>>
>>77701601
I've occasionally drifted into fewer or more panels as I need them. Four panel format's served me well so far though. Don't think I could handle unique layouts with every page.

That's a nice colour scheme.

That's not a good design for a knife - don't have holes in stuff.
Better yet, give them a sword, or otherwise something with range. Also, you may want to have the weapon have the same colour scheme; a black handle with yellow trim (and maybe even a shiny black blade)

I'm assuming that's that's some sneaky beaky rogue-ish character. I'd give them something a bit more form-fitting than a big flappy heavy robe. That looks awkward to crouch in, or run. Try some big pants like pic.
The shoulder-things are a bit awkward, you should make them less bulky, so that they sit closer to the shoulders
Also, yellow trim on the gloves'd be nice.

try to learn how to draw feet at, say, a 3/4ths angle, rather than either 100% forward or 100% to the side

They have two right hands.

Are those supposed to be boobs? I don't think you'd be able to see the, uh, boob lines (dunno what it'd be called) under whatever armour that is.

I don't know what to say about the face other than it's pretty bad.
The lips are super huge and pronounced, and that's not really something you want on a ninja-thing. The emo-hair and eye tattoo are a bit cliche, and the overall anatomy ain't great. You may wanna drastically change how you do your faces. Just, like, from the ground-up.

How do you guys feel about imagination being a main characters power?

I had this idea for a story where there main character imagines he can fight or use powers or weapons of heroes from books and shows he liked reading while growing up.

But I don't want him to be like super powerful with this power. Like fighting real enemies or death defying situations is pretty scary for him, so he might not be able to use the weapons or powers to there full potential.

But I thought it would be funny if he buys like a nerf gun or sword from some show he likes, and then suddenly it becomes the real deal once his mind starts wondering.

What do you guys think?

>>
>>77712222
as you said, you don't want them to be super powerful.. so.. how do you limit it? that's the problem. Twelve Forever comes to mind.
>>77712261
and if you've read the actual story to the part after where the movie ends, where he starts using his imagination to make things real, you'll know why it has limits
>>77712400
its format is godawful.. but it's -okay- for one specific kind of comic where you binge a few pages at a time
>>
>>77712222
Sounds like a perfect material for both Gary Stu and a self-insert. I mean, it's the ultimate self-insert - the average guy kinda overseeing the story with the power of characters from all the other stories he witnessed in the past.

Way too easy to fuck this up badly if you ask me. Still, if you think you're up to task, you can try.
>>
>>77712435

Yeah thats why I'm trying to see if I can limit his powers some how.

Or maybe he needs something to be able to manifest powers and weapons.

Plus he wouldn't be as skilled as the real heroes, so he would have trouble using them to his advantage.
>>
>>77712400
The awful entry under entry under entry design, with actual navigation stuck in a small space in the lower left part of the screen, which you have to scroll and scroll and scroll and scroll some more once there are more than a few tens of pages. Maybe it looks better in bigger resolutions, it certainly doesn't on my 1440x900.

If webcomics actually used a full chapter per release format, it would work a bit better because at least the navigation on the left would be much more useful. Since that's not the case and we go page by page instead, it doesn't work at all.
>>
>>77712411
Hair neatly combed to the side looked too boyish with my art, so I needed to make it a bit more wild. I guess I overdid the wild part a bit.

>>
>>77714579
Personally I'm against that because it seems like that could lead to a weird, fractured audience. If your goal is to make money off of your webcomic, I would recommend you get your own site. You also have the most control over the design and layout that way.

And if cost is a concern, there are a lot of hosts that cost $10/month or less that provide you with more bandwidth than you'll ever need for at least a year or two, until your comic explodes, and by the time it does that you shouldn't have a problem paying for more bandwidth.
>>
>>77714446
I'd love to know myself. The last time I had a webcomic, I've had it on ComicGenesis and it worked for me back then, but that was 9 or 10 years ago. I don't know how it works now, but in 2006 you had to have certain elements in your design. Nothing you really wouldn't want to have I guess, but it did restrict you a bit if you planned to be creative with your site, e.g. Unsounded's extended pages might have been impossible. Maybe it has changed since then, but I've also heard their administration went to shit a long, long time ago. I didn't have any real webcomic to put out after that one, so I wasn't particularly interested in the hosting issue.

I set up a website at skylightcomic.net

>>77717014
Will surely allow a full RSS feed, I used those for a long time.

I'm brushing up my website-making and I'll probably start things up in a very barebones fashion, but it's better than nothing.
>>
>>77718457
Simplicity is good! All my site has is standard webcomic page navigation and 3 links: Archive, Cast and About. Oh, and an RSS feed. Eventually I'll add a Shop page, but that's quite a ways off, and that'll most likely be it for my site. Overcomplicated site design is a negative.
>>
>>77718457
ComicPress/WordPress has RSS enabled by default, so you shouldn't need to do anything technical to set it up. You may have to go and dig around the settings to display the little RSS icon though.

I also use RSS for pretty much for every website I read regularly that updates less than daily, especially as I use a Firefox plug-in that opens up new pages in tabs.

There's a lot of hate regarding Tapastic, but honestly, I just don't see any alternatives that come even close to decent.

Smackjeeves only allows pages of up to 500kb size, which means I have to randomly start resizing pages for them to fit.

Could of course make my own website, but honestly, does that gain you any followers at all? I'm aware the really big webcomics benefit more from a private site, but it just seems like I'd get too easily lost in the crowd.
>>

>Could of course make my own website, but honestly, does that gain you any followers at all? I'm aware the really big webcomics benefit more from a private site, but it just seems like I'd get too easily lost in the crowd.
This is just you being insecure. If you hit the right demos and advertise and promote your comic effectively you won't have any problem gaining an audience, regardless of your comic's hosting situation.

How can you run out of 500 kB? It's not possible unless you go for retarded image dimensions.
>>
>>77719179
500kb is actually really small
The hi-res PNG versions of pages I make are generally above 5mb
>>
>>77719179
What are you doing that your comic is less than a MB? You either have a pixel art gimmick and you use gifs or you're compressing your shit to hell.
>>
>>77719283
High-res (2318x3857) is 1.59 while resized (980x1517) is 1.15mb, using my last page as an example. It varies by page of course but that difference is pretty typical for my comic. How high-res are your pages?
>>
>>77719864
In my recent pages the size is 2mb-3.5mb 1950x3000@300dpi, I confused the 5mb with some of my higher res illustrations.
Resized for viewing online they are 975x1500@300dpi with 1mb-1.5mb filesizes
>>
>>77720720
>Resized for viewing online they are 975x1500@300dpi
uh they wouldn't be 300dpi unless you mean you cropped the images instead of down scaling. "dpi" doesn't mean anything unless you're printing.

Almost perfect. and i actually like the side by side thing because i assume each new update will have the previous one on the left (?) or else it'll start a new page, which tips you off
Right now there are two main issues:
>navigation is inconsistent. i could outline how, but you have so few pages right now you can just experiment yourself
>navigating to different pages doesnt change the URL so there's no linking someone to any particular part
>>
>>77724948
>>navigating to different pages doesnt change the URL so there's no linking someone to any particular part
Yeah I'm trying to figure this out. The host I'm using doesn't allow DNS shenanigans so this is a very basic redirect from the .net domain to the actual host, but this is messing up the actual navigation? Whatever.

>Almost perfect. and i actually like the side by side thing because i assume each new update will have the previous one on the left (?) or else it'll start a new page, which tips you off
Nah I'm simply uploading 2 pages at a time when I update. I definitely like the 'book' format better than the scrolly thing in Tapastic.

As for the inconsistent navigation, I have no clue... I'm definitely too tired to think. When I have fixed this domain problem and I have added a bunch of buttons that link to archives and a few other things (any ideas?), that'll be perfect in my book.

I don't really feel like I have a lot to say when I post the pages, and I don't like having content in the comic outside the actual pages, so it'll probably stay barebones.

My only gripe is that this two-page format is spread over a single image and this might cause problems to tablet users, but I'll face this problem in the far future.
>>
>>77725120
i actually have no idea about this stuff, so i take it this is all hosted elsewhere and you're literally redirecting each page?
>Stuff to say other than the pages
it's funny, i always do, but i feel like i'm talking to nobody, so I don't bother. also I don't know how to have a news area or whatever. better to save that shit for deviantart, or for here.

Hopefully I'll be back on track with the redraws by Monday, and from that point onwards I'll be more careful. I feel like I have no chance of making it if I don't keep the quality as high as I can, even at the cost of frequent updates.

Almad and Celik.jpg
250KB, 1122x1373px
Just an idea, an idea that's going to be tucked away for a while, but one I didn't want to ignore.

Key to the Kingdom (KttK) - Coin Saga

On a middle-east looking continent is a gutsy kid named Almad, a strong-willed boy who used to be a slave in a diamond mine six months before the present. He was nearly killed by the leader of a gang of desert thieves, but he managed to steal a lamp before the thieves rode off, leaving him to die. He's been rubbing the lamp to temporarily communicate with a former slave and fierce warrior named Celik (not a genie), who was trapped in the lamp by a wizard's spell. With his help over the last half year, Almad has learned to read, among other things. Free, but not knowing what to do with his life, Almad makes his first goal becoming strong enough to confront the wizard who trapped Celik.

After succeeding at that, Celik trusts him enough to tell him that he's searching for incredible, one-of-a-kind riches. They team up, learn the politics of the land and who's who, and race everyone else in a brutal journey for the treasures.
>>
>>77725430
.. that's actually really cool. that's a great idea. it plays on the subtle mamluk imagery in most depictions of genies (especially Popo)
now i'm not certain how a man made of earth could be trapped in a lamp the same way as a djinn made of fire and smoke, but.. fuckit, wizards are crazy. also you should look up the arabic term for wizard, i fucking can't remember.

december 1st, you got 5 days buddy.

Anyways, yeah, I guess i meant to say improved.
>>
>>77725494

I wanted a design that suggested genie at first, especially to those superstitious enough to think he's a REAL genie, when it's really the fact that even after his escape, Celik's had some hard knocks. He's in his late 30s, and in the time he's escaped he's been stabbed, burned (see shoulder), sliced, and a poisoning attempt that turned his skin from the dark brown it originally was into a very deep blue hue. Needless to say, he's paid back every person who's left a mark on him in full. As for the spikes in his shoulder, he figured after getting scuffed up plenty of times before that he'd have someone insert those in his shoulder to look even fiercer. He absolutely plays up his appearance.
>>
>>77725637
>a black slave from arab times, easily the worst black people have ever been treated in history, at least tied
>Gets turned from regular blackpeople brown to dark blue
neat. also helps with the plausibility of thinking he's a genie. works for me.
he should likely have been branded at some point too, i reckon.
Now when you say the spikes are inserted... like piercings?
>>
>>77725660

Sort of like piercings, but more likely is that he found someone with a specialty that best fit his wish of having two horns from a monster fused to his shoulder. I should also clarify that despite the inspiration, my fantasy includes blacks amongside other ethnicities equally, holding wealthy positions and royal positions and everything. Almad and Celik were enslaved because they belonged to nomadic tribes where the sultans and shahs and so on figured no one would care if they were used and abused for labor to get precious goods like sugar, cinnamon, gold, jewels, etc.

I wouldn't want to distract from the story with commentary on race.
>>
>>77725802
well i think depending on where you go, that's plausible. you had plenty of respected darkies in this kingdom and that, just not so much in the islamic world
so yeah it's a fantasy arabian setting, there's room for all of that. it's allowed to be hinted at or a nod to, it doesnt have to be heavyhanded and exact. I'm down.

Pffft. What are you doing people? My pages were 850x1200 at about 200 kB on average. But hey, instead of showing you my bad comic that's already taken off the Internet, I'll use much better known examples, taking a look at their last several pages.

- Unsounded - 600x900 up, 250-300 kB (extended pages are multiple files, so I'm not going to bother), JPEG
- Paranatural - varies, around 770x1120, 750-1100 kB, PNG
- Stand Still, Stay Silent - 950x1350, 300-400 kB, JPEG
- Gunnerkrigg Court - 600x850, 170-200 kB, JPEG
- Penny Arcade - 1050x526, 170-200 kB, JPEG
- Camp Weedonwantcha - 970x1400 (varies in height), 650-900 kB, JPEG

As you can see, you can have a successful webcomic and not run out of 500 kB per image. Your average or "measly" 950x1500 or so resolution is actually BIG in comparison. Also the above shows clearly - don't use the fucking PNG format, use JPG instead, like most of the big players do.

hmm, might be an image quality thing
i always save mine as quality 10 out of 12.. but with a lot of very saturated and very flat colors, that's important. a lower quality JPG would show really bad artifacts otherwise.
odd you badmouth png though, if your comic is mostly aliased then png is ideal, much smaller files. and if it's not, png is still usually smaller and nicer looking files..
in any case though, no artist ever likes limits. being told your file can't get above a certain size OR ELSE is bothersome. Besides what does the individual file size matter? it doesn't help the host any because the artist will surely just make shorter, more numerous pages as a result, even splitting a particular comic into two image files if necessary

>JPGs are better than PNGs

Literally all of my high quality PNGs have smaller file sizes than my high quality JPGs.
What the fuck are you talking about.
>>
>>77730663
No, what the fuck are you talking about?

Okay, I thought, maybe that's the issue of no color because my comic had none, only black and white. So just a second ago I fetched one of my very few full color images, saved it as BMP first (so no compression, 100% true to the original), then downsized it to viewable proportions and saved as PNG, then did the same but with JPG. Result? JPG is 68 kB while PNG is 280 kB. Oops.

"Oh but you must have lost some quality!" The only difference, besides the massive file size disproportion, is that one out of many shades of blue in the picture is slighty different in JPG. And that's it. No visible artifacts. Saved at 90% quality.

But maybe that's just one exception, unfortunately chosen as an example? So I took another full-color image, saved it as BMP first, then as JPG and PNG, this time without resizing. Result? JPG is 262 kB, PNG is 901 kB. This time I don't even see any differences besides the file size. Oooops!

So again, what the fuck are you talking about?
>>
>>77731280
Not thinking about file size but .png is better almost always for anything online. .jpg is best for printing if anything.
>>
>>77731280

Png is good for solid colors and jpg is good for gradients.

Bones is without a doubt the most perfect example of what a webcomic artist is.

>>77736604
it's not just bones. i don't think many people want or care to see WIPs unless the artist is looking for advice on something specific or is in the process of developing characters/story/etc and again, is looking for advice.

i sound like a real bitch, but don't assume people want or care to see preliminary work, or "inks done!" or whatever. Learn to post your work sparingly - you're only as good as the worst thing you allow people to see. If you only post finished, or adept, work then folks will have an impression of you as an adept artist. Which is... important.

>>
>>77737087
I think trying to make rules is a fruitless endeavor, but I just mean... you guys gotta learn to critically evaluate your own work and find your own mistakes and fix them. You won't improve your eye when you let others look for you - that also contributes to the slow pace of your improvement. Being able to evaluate your own work for error is a critical skill and one that atrophies when you constantly let others do it for you. This also applies to you >>77737132
I have been here since these threads started and while you've shown improvement, I think you've spun your wheels a lot too. Also it's good to ignore critique you know isn't valid, but it's the same with compliments too. I feel like the people who're saying you've made "big improvement" are the kinda folks who only look at cartoon/anime art and don't really realize how high a ceiling there is. Everybody here needs to look at more "fine" art, even the folks who do it all the time. Trying to get "webcomic good" is a really low bar for anybody to set for themselves. I know you can do more, which is why I'm soooo hard on you when I post. If I thought you were shit or hopeless I wouldn't waste the time.

I wasn't posting for a while, because I'm still working on my skills, to be bluntly honest. But it'd be nice to know if people are even interested in concept art etc.

Also I personally don't mind people posting here. Actually this thread is surprisingly empty. Might be because of Thanksgiving.

>you're only as good as the worst thing you allow people to see. If you only post finished, or adept, work then folks will have an impression of you as an adept artist. Which is... important.

That's fucking stupid. Many people, especially fellow artists appreciate seeing sketches and wips of artists they like. I have whole folders of nothing but sketches and roughs of professional comic artists. The very idea that a sketch somehow doesn't show as much skill as finished work is pretty amateur in the first place. If you are bad, your finished work will look just as bad, maybe even worse, no amount of polish can hide fundamental flaws. Meanwhile if you are good, your skill shows through in even the roughest wips.

There's something very strange about hand-writing text meant to be on a screen, but doing so in an abbreviated unreadable fashion due to how long it would take, then type-writing it out afterwards in what is meant to be outside the fourth wall. Not criticizing, just funny to think about
>>

I agree on this, whenever somebody says that or make "Hi I am totally an aspiring animator how do I not pander to tumblr it just comes out as

>"I want to make stuff that will be liked but marginalize a potential fanbase because of certain users on a said site"

People on this website need to stop caring about SJWs so much. Worry about your craft being good enough to have an actual fanbase first
>>

I recommend looking into the traditional sense of alignments, i.e. Law, Chaos, Neutral, and then think about how good and evil applies to any of them.

This week's Fanart Friday is going up in a couple hours and I was wondering how this looks. Not so much Kamala herself, drawn by PK13 and pretty close to the comic's usual style, but overall look. I'm going to throw the website link on the bottom left and the artist credit on the other side but any last minute impressions, particularly the design, would be nice.

Also, in order from lowest to highest in file size for this image:

And people should go on adventures or quests and stuff.

Whats a good way to explain all of this? Do I even need to explain why all these characters and things coexist?

No, why? Unless it's important for the story, there's no need to explain supernatural phenomena. They're just there. The more you try to present a reasonable setting for these, without resorting to the usual "it's magic lol" stuff, the more likely you'll trap yourself in a corner of fallacies.

No I won't give advice, as I said I gave up on giving advice, because the people we're talking about won't even consider the feedback they're given, so why bother? And as a consequence, why are they posting WIPs in the first place if they won't change anything that people find jarring if not for attention and hugs?

This was my statement, I'm not condemning anyone by saying that they'd improve faster if they considered the advice they're given and actually put their time into drawing rather than spamming WIPs; this is a simple truth that every person that is seriously invested in drawing knows very well, and it's also why said invested invested people all stop posting in here eventually.
