Yeah, there's a lot of tension when Hiccup admits he's the one who shot down Toothless, I honestly thought that was going to be the turning point of her character. Like realizing that the people of Berk really didn't change and even Hiccup is just like them. Fuck, that sounds like a really interesting conflict.

The buildup was fine, but the resolution was utter shit. Way worse that the resolution from the first one. At least the first one applied and obeyed Chekhov's gun, at one point through montage, the second movie was just flat out retarded.

The main character tries to apply the same shit that he tried to used on his dad, the "let me show you", in the first movie, and he had to save literally everyone and then almost die to convince his dad, not to mention all his dads actions where to protect the village and stop the raids, and Hiccup solved that for him.

The return of the mother makes no sense, the villain's control over the Alpha make no sense and was severely underdeveloped to nonexistence, the villains motivations make no sense, Toothless challenging an alpha THROUGH FUCKING MIND CONTROL makes no sense, and the ONLY reason Stoic dies is that Hiccup can't acknowledged reality, AND THEN HICCUP STILL DOESN'T"T REALLY LEARN ANYTHING DURING THE MOVIE.

Now you have heard several someones who didn't like it, and clear explanations

All the while hiccup is still friends with his dads murderer and he gets to ascend the throne and fuck the queen i.e. His mom. Didn't even ask the dragon why he didn't break the mind control sooner

So, did the villain just walk away? And what happened to his army?

It was really good but the ending was REALLY rushed.

When Stoick died, I honestly thought the movie was gonna end shortly after that as a cliffhanger, since the entire movie led into you thinking they were gonna defeat Bludvist in the first battle, and then catches you off guard with "Of course they aren't going to win. They're kids who have had dragons for like 3 years, and Bludvist is practically a God who has spent the majority of his life controlling these things. They are outmatched in every aspect of this battle".

Obivously since it's a kids movie they wouldn't/coludn't have ended the movie on such a downer with his dad dying and all the dragons becoming evil, but to just completely fix the problem in the space of 10 minutes was really underwhelming. If they'd ended the film with them discovering the babies hadn't been turned and finishing with a bit of hope, I'd have probably rated it alongside the original.

The finale of this film could have easily been expanded into an entire movie on its own.

Yeah, I'm seeing a lot of valid points as to why people couldn't like this movie. I mean, I'll still like it, but I really do understand the flaws of this movie now. Some of the random bullshit plot armour and power of friendship stuff is something that I'm so used to at this point, that I didn't even think of it as a bad thing. I was just so sad Stoic was dead, and just wanted Hiccup to fucking win after that.
