She was never FotM. Individuals wanting to wank over a character and forcing a few threads just to get artists to draw them does not make them FotM. Threads that start out by declaring someone an FotM are never FotM threads.

Real FotMs create spontaneous bursts of excitement and creativity that are as ephemeral as their rise. It's got to be more than a couple of drawfags or writefags giving each other hand jobs. FotM burn so brightly, the no-fun-allowed brigade must come in and extinguish it with their jackboots.

It often starts out that way, but your standards are too low. Just because someone keeps making new threads and successfully bait one or two drawfags does not make it okay to declare a new FotM. That's the same success rate as a drawthread.

I concede it's harder now to get a real FotM that isn't a furry. /co/ has done much to drive away the drawfags of yesteryears, and people prefer to lock themselves inside their generals instead of experiencing something new. But we shouldn't lower our standards.

All those characters have had their original FotM moments years ago, when they aired or when someone uploaded a rip. Where have you been?

The current threads are just a few diehards baiting for more stuff. None of them are FotM threads, because they don't have that sense of discovery the originals had. They're seasonal generals with a few contributors, nothing more.

I think one of the very problems of the FOTM is too much discussion of whether it IS a FOTM or not and arguments over the definition of FOTM. That sort of shit dominated the discussion in those threads more often than not.

'Declaring' a FOTM is like declaring that something is 'the next MLP'. It's often done prematurely, and should really only be done in retrospect, after the fact cannot be denied.

Here's my opinion on definitions:
1-2 anons forcing a thread = autism (ex., the What About Mimi? thread going on right now, or the 'I wanna squeeze the Powerpuff Girls' threads)
3+ anons posting pictures, references, etc. and discussing the source material, later to be joined by up to 5 drawfriends providing original content, with a thread that can last up to a week if bumped with determination = Waifu thread (ex., all the 'forced' FOTMs that never really caught on)
Dozens of anons and drawfriends flooding a thread with discussion, enthusiasm, original content, original characters based on the source material, writefaggotry, and so on, filling multiple threads in less than a week = True FOTM. (ex. Leggy Lamb, Pavita, Grieve-Tan, and so on)

I wanted to contribute but I forgot them all.

This is one of the worst examples of what new FotM threads have devolved into. It's just circle jerking over a drawfag like Chochi or the namefags that crowd the XJ-9 and Ghoul School threads that keep drawing the same stuff over and over because it's helping their tumblr or patreon or whatever. That's good for them, but the threads aren't about the characters anymore. That string of Pavita, Leggy Lamb, and that wheelchair fox were just furry threads in disguise. Those were the worst because they were about a fetish, not a character.

Anyone who still cares about furries (positively or negatively) is living in the past. The way I see it, it's all just cartoons. If we deleted all the 'nuisance' threads, there'd be no Jessica Jones threads now, no Rick and Morty threads a few months ago, and no Avatar threads back when THAT was getting 20 threads a day. Those threads weren't getting deleted at first. But the same 20 or 30 posters just kept milking them. They were never as big on /co/ as they were in those posters' heads. That's the whole deal with the FotM threads. They were never as big as these posters thought.

That's true for most of FotMs beyond the ones you highlighted in your original post. It doesn't make them any less a FotM than others but I think you will agree with me that the people who took "FotM" literally and tried to make it into some type of project are the ones that ruined it.

As a wandering drawfag, I love FOTM and waifu threads. Most of the time, when you draw something for someone, no one seems to care. FOTM/waifu threads always seem to appreciate your efforts more, and the love/obsession they have for the subject is infectious. That's what makes them fun.

Well, that just goes back to my first post saying that the idea of FotM have been cheapened by constant FotM threads. Back before we had poster counts or a catalog, someone would post about a new or obscure show, or download links to a forgotten show. Then one drawfag or one writefag would post something great, and that inspires dozens of other artists to join in. People would keep posting, other people would come in and wonder why this thread kept bumping, and learn about something new. There'd probably be a hundred or so posters, and hundreds more exposed to show they had never seen.

That's gone. You've got 30 or so people starting threads just to bait one or two artists, they're not discovering something new, and everyone else stays in their own generals.
