The Gems did attempt to fuse with him in Alone Together, so if anything I don't think that they'd react to him wanting to fuse with them, but they'd definitely (especially Pearl) react to something while being fused with him. On top of that, the secondary characters are shit. They're all boring at best, annoying twats at worst with no central theme as a backbone of their personality. Greg, Lars, the mute kid, that guy with the conspiracy theories. They could all die horribly under a steamroller and I wouldn't even flinch. Of course the more you go into female minority territory, the less flawed the personality.

Steven is a whiny little bitch with the most annoying voice I've ever heard on a main character and by the half of S1 when I dropped the show he made absolutely zero progress in terms of personality. I don't know if this changed.

From what I understand the gems made zero progress as well apart from Garnet being a fusion fetishist made up by two little lesbians and introducing Rose who's apparently a hamplanet. When they ran out of ideas they added more badly designed evil copycats of the main gems to the mix instead of actually making progresses with the plot.

Just like I always say with AT, this show could've been great. I saw a lot of heart in the very start of it, and the premise was great. Superpowered tokusatsu ensemble taking care of a little boy? It was cute, fresh and it could have opened up to the perfect mix of adventure, cool lore and coming-of-age themes. Steven becoming more and more mature and eventually becoming a powerful hero by the final season could've been even more satisfying than ATLA with Aang.
I can't even really hate these shows because I get too sad from the wasted potential.

Pandering to fans can be implemented before a show even airs. Sugar purposely made cutesy characters that she knew many people would ship because she's done it many times before as a high schooler. And for the characters that AREN'T canonically together in the show, she makes sure to throw shippers so many bones to the point where fucking skeletons are writing the script. Cutesy, blush-filled moments take priority over learning about the Homeworld. I'm more interested in the Gems planet than the Gems themselves because so far, all they talk about is relationshit and being obsessed with fusion.
