Poland had quite a powerful army at one time and was a major eastern European power for a bit. They saved Vienna from the Turks a couple times. Their position geographically held them back a bit. They had the Prussians and other Germanic states to the west and Russia to the east. They prospered in their lands, but expansion would have been more costly than profitable for them.
