But flails don't face the same direction depending on how you swing, you could easily hit yourself.
I had thought about a directional explosive, that would allow you to make a surprise swing (like how ruby uses her recoil).
As in, you overswing, people think that you're open, and then you trigger the explosive to immediately swing back.
It could also be used to just knock an enemy shield out of the way or do massive damage if you already hit someone.

But that would probably be incredibly inaccurate, the flail would fly everywhere.

I agree with you with the flesh them out part but honestly I find there's noting wrong with giving Neptune a fear of water, aside from them thinking it funny since its ironic from some named Neptune to be afraid of water, since unlike what seems like most characters, gives him an actual fear and something to probably conquer in the future.

Only problem was they they used the joke through the entire fight. Maybe he could have started acting like more of an idiot when he gets toss on to the ocean field. Start him off by going to the other side, actually supporting his team from that side , and them someone from NDGO gets the jump on him and gets him on the other side of the field.

Weapons come in a variety of things. Basically for the most part most weapons have some form of melee and projectile mode, but not all of them.

Grimm are still sort of a mystery but the current understood thing about them is they are creatures that generate and replicate due to negative thoughts/emotions/suffering etc. How they appear is still up in the air.

Faunus are the sort of "mutants" of the rwbyverse, but less stated. They're basically Humans with an animal trait (horns/ears etc) and enhanced senses.

In the world there are hunters who use their souls to generate aura to fight against the grimm, creatures of darkness and evil.
A hunter can manifest their aura as a semblance, which is a unique power unique to the hunter.
Weapons are more anime than most anime: sniper rifle scythe, shotgun gauntlets, spear/javelin/sword/rifle and shield, grenade launcher hammers
There are two sentient species on the planet: Humans and faunus, which are animal cat people that are opressed or something despite probably being physically superior to humans in every way. Teenage hunters in training attend academies to learn how to hunt grimm and master their aura.
My advice is to watch the world of remnant videos, season 1 and you'll get the gist of it. All that will maybe take two hours. Skip Jaundice

There are four city-states, called kingdoms.
Vacuo - Desert city in the West, not a lot of emphasis on formality. Home of Shade Academy.
Atlas - Northernmost city, only city-state with a standing army and with a pervasive government. Home of the generic umbrella corporation "Schnee Dust Company." Lots of robots and airships.
Mistral - Far East, not much is revealed about it. Pyrrha Nikos is a famous fighter from there. Home of Haven Academy.
Vale - Central city, close ties with Atlas. Looks a lot like America. Home of Beacon and Signal Academies.

There are settlements outside of the cities, but they have a tendency to disappear, never to be seen or heard from again.

There was also an effort to settle the Faunus on a small continent named Menagerie in the south, but it's unknown how successful that was.

There are a couple of historical events. There was "The Great War" 80 years before the series, a big part of which was an organized effort to destroy art. After it was over it became customary to name children after colors (either directly or something evocative of a color) and the four kingdoms organized an event called the Vytal festival (named after the island upon which the peace treaty was signed) where Huntsmen would compete every two years.

There was another war called the Faunus rebellion. The Faunus won, though they are still discriminated against.

In short, 4 kingdoms, Huntress who hunt down Grim and Faunus. Faunus are bear cat monkey people who are terrorists, lead by a Cool Hatman who is on a ruse cruse by a Fire chick. Also waifus with gunblades.

Hunters are the ones who fight against the forces of darkness within the world. Most of the time it's the Grimm, as they are a constant threat and there's just so many.
There's also times when Humans/Faunus, such as Cinder and company or the White Fang need stopping. We don't know much about Hunters other than that, like how they're organized, how they recieve missions, etc.
