Half a million dollars for a full fledged video game with 10-20 minutes of animation is not really feasable. The budget would have to be roughly the same as dragon lair 1's budget, as it'd be using the same technology basically. DL1's budget was 1 million, which is described as 'shoe string', where they had to take a bunch of shortcuts to get it out the door. 1 million adjusted for inflation is 2.1 million today, so 4 times what the kickstarter's asking, and that's for a 'shoe string' budget.

The problem with kickstarter is that the average joe has no idea what kind of costs are involved in making pretty much anything. 500k sounds like plenty to a single guy, that's a decent sized house, right? But in company terms that'll pay the salaries of just 10 modestly paid employees for a single year - including all the hidden fees like insurance and taxes and such. Those ten spots have to be split into animators, backround artists, sound guys, director, writers, programmers, etc. etc. And that leaves zero dollars for office space or licensing or voice acting or any other unexpected extra costs.

The MST3K Kickstarter offers a bunch of pledge options and has some fairly nice rewards even for lower level donations. The Dragon's Lair Kickstarter was pretty much geared towards higher money donors from the start and most of them are well overpriced for what's been offered.

Of course, MST3K is also helped out by the existence of Rifftrax, which has kept people's love of the concept alive. Bluth can't really compete with that using a thirty year old game that a lot of people just aren't familiar with.

I loved Dragon's Lair as a kid in the arcade. I replayed it recently. It's terrible.

It's good as a cartoon, but the game is about 15 minutes long. Same goes for the sequel, which is even worse as a game.

Plus if Don Bluth is seriously thinking he can bring back Hand Drawn Animations. He's got another thing coming. Hand Drawing for Full Length is dead. It only mainly exists as shorts. Plus Studios and International Companies are finding ways to reduce cost of 3D Animation.
Simply just ask the Chinese and the Russians.

I mean if Don Bluth wants to do this as a solo animation production without assistance from The Big Studios then by all means. However without them he's seriously gimped for talent, and equipment and resources. Plus if anything does get finalize it most likely wouldn't end up in theaters more than likely it would end up in the bargain bin for $5.

If he wants he should talk to Netflix or Amazon or Hulu should anything get finalize for distribution because let's face it. This isn't the '80s, '90s or even early '00s circa (2000-2005)

Not him but I used to watch a ton of MST3K, enough to consider myself a fan. But looking back now I find myself questioning the point of it. Or at least, I question the necessity of the full-length stuff. Humorous commentary highlights are one thing, and they have delivered more than their share of amusing remarks. But it's not like every joke always hit the mark. There were plenty of bad ones and plenty that simply fell flat if you've watched as much as I have.
