The client said I could do whatever I wanted so I made a little homage to the controversial Manara cover. (you know, for fun?)
>A week later, Frank Cho posts his SpiderGwen/Manara cover and Robbi Rodriguez voiced his opinion on it, ala The Mary Sue. Which has really sparked some debate across news blogs and social media. Actually, I think Rob Liefeld just joined the fray as I'm posting this.

Oh no!
It's a celebration of male empowerment.
Just as much as the depiction of female characters in comics is a celebration of female empowerment.
Nothing's more empowering to people, than butt-shots and skimpy outfits. I look forward to a future where all comic book costumes meet a standard requirement of sexiness.

Being passive-aggressive and ironic isn't funny or smart, it just makes you look like a tool, which you are.
You know where you should go back to by now, buckle up and go.
>>
>>71201645
That's cause it's a fan driven initiative, not an actually habit among the industry.
Let's face it, there is a difference in the level of female costume sexiness and the level of male costume sexiness.
Now there are 2 solutions:
1 - Make all costumes equally unsexy. (Boo, boring!)
2 - Make all costumes equally sexy. (YAY)
Now anybody with tech armor or the like can probably stay the same, but I fully expect everyone else to be rocking at least a banana hammock.

Aside from cool artwork, there isnt anything going for the comic that we havent already seen in some form.

This is nothing but a cash grab on trending social justice bullshit. I sincerely hope this along with fem thor bomb financially so we can make room for stories that writers actually want to tell and can take seriously.

Aaron has been one of the only writers to actually write thor as "a god". It was one of the only redeeming arcs he got since richards used him as a meat puppet.

People tend to forget the important thing: The dude on the right has a sexuality while the dude on the left is only occasionally a sexual being, mostly during stories when his lover ends up getting killed.

Now I dunno about you, but most people don't dream about getting killed so that their former lover can now starr in a story about superhumans fucking up the planet.

The Hawkeye initiative is retarded.
A) Agile comic characters do those poses all the time to begin with so you aren't making some great change. Aka see if spider-man can go 5 seconds without a provocative pose or showing off of the spideybutt.
B) Hawkeye would do all of the poses to begin with while being completely in character .When the Avengers get bored they probably bet that he can make X shot while cartwheeling off the side of Stark Tower in a pink tutu and doing a plie.

>The Hawkeye initiative is retarded.

Spider-Gwen is apparently one of Marvel's top sellers right now. Is it just because of MUH GWEN? Because personally I find it a boring, dull, uninteresting experience. I suppose if I was into drawing sexy women, I probably would try to do it without fear of SJW. I would just keep doing it and ignore them. A lot of issues people have is that they keep logging into social media sites. No respectable artist or writer should be on twitter or tumblr. There's nothing wrong with liking or disliking a character, you dumb little puddle of wasted brain matter. It wasn't something Cho did for shits and giggles, a fan commissioned it. And it didn't ask for that at all, it just said something with Batman and Superman. And Cho decided to turn that into a two-page, prolonged rant on why he absolutely DESPISES a character for having a decent moral center. Rape is no different than murder and war and other negative aspects of people as far as writing goes why should it be held in a different category?
It is regularly used in warfare in Africa as a weapon of fear, it happens trying to create this barrier or aversion to sexual violence in fiction that really does not exist in to regular violence its unnecessary and merely used for political ammunition for social issues like "rape culture" and other such nonsense.

For some reason though you end up with stuff like that ugly as shit she hulk run, or people tracing pornstar poses everytime a girl is on panel. It's getting better but there wasn't much inbetween for a while.

No one is against the sex appeal, just keep it out of the forefront until we get some good stories in and you can justify a character as something that isn't eye candy.

You see, I really don't care what creeps vilifying sexual expression think.
You can like sexy things or not like them. Find them appropriate or inappropriate for any given situation.
You can say you don't like how a character is portrayed. But smearing entire genres without rhyme or reason is just bizarre.
How dare you portray attractive characters in suggestive poses!? Waaaah!
How dare you make your protagonist a goddamn sexual tyrannosaurus!?

As friend Anita showed us last week, what they want is non-representation of anything.
They want no story, no artistic decision, just blank space to project on.
Which is only logical. If your aim to to have everyone to have no possible way of feeling underrepresented, the moment you show anything a person identifies with (relationships, social behavior, character motivation, race, gender), everyone not associating themself with that will obviously feel unrepresented.
Therefore a barely human shape will do until someone starts taking otherkin seriously.

Nope, I highly doubt they condemn the vast majority of fiction they claim to be fans of. You can look on all their blogs and see it, this argument is moot and you have no ground.

People exist to be toys and playthings in fiction. Many more men have been brutalized throughout fiction than women ever will be and the corrupted worldview of women being "special" when they are not has allowed this sick interpretation of anything negative happening to women as some sort of super-crime against humanity is absurd.

Covers have been bullshit for decades and you know it. They're just eye catches, nothing more.

>>
>>71226100
Fictional destruction is means to an end while sexualization of fictional characters hardly serves any purpose beyond eye candy. It's almost like if a movie were to have only violence it'd be an action flick and if it only had sexiness it'd be a porno. It also sets a tone for the work, and it's often appropriate as these comics used to be for a demographic that appreciates hot chicks striking hot poses. It would be more of a non-issue if DC and Marvel weren't trying to change their image while going more mainstream.
>>
>>71226575
>hardly serves any purpose beyond eye candy
The point is they are all candy at every point of their trivial existence. They exist to be toys and entertain us, it doesn't really matter how.

It's only poisoned cultural views that actually relegate notions of what is just or evil to fiction and claim it's promoting or making political statements that is ludicrous. Regardless of ANY possibility of such things happening you're supposed to be intelligent enough to discern it from reality.

Every time anyone condemns or wishes to censor something in comics they are insulting you, period.
>>
>>71226390
The fact that he made the Harley one can be used to confirm suspicions that he did the first one fully aware of what people would say. Some call it self-censorship, others call it consideration. He doesn't have to be considerate of those who don't like the sexy variant, but they don't have to be considerate to him. I just think that he could have defended his position better.

>Sexualization hardly serves any purpose beyond eye candy
What if sexuality is an important part of the character or story.
If we're judging it solely by the single cover, the action is just as much eye candy as the sexuality since there's no story going on.
Sexualization can also go into setting tone, characterization, countless aspects of the story.
And why is it for comics to "grow up" they must do away with sexuality while most all other mediums can wear their's proudly.
DC and Marvel are free to do whatever they want but to do away with sexuality would be a mistake. And Cho himself has nothing to do with that, this just seems more like trying to shame everyone into being on their "best behavior" and draw stuff that doesn't offend them.
>>71226742
His remark seemed to be he didn't consider anyone would care. The fact he made the Harley can confirm suspicions he doesn't respect the outrage but not that he was baiting it in the first place.

>>
>>71226696
>Every time anyone condemns or wishes to censor something in comics they are insulting you, period.
That's not true though; condemning DC and Marvel for what they have done to the American comic industry is constructive. Someone saying "I don't like this, but I would if you changed this or that" can be seen as constructive criticism as the big two would love to know what they can do to get more people to give them money. You're internalizing this too much.
>>
>>71226742
>consideration
Why would he have to consider some random people that he wasn't drawing for?

If everyone avoided making things somebody might not like, nothing would ever be made.
>>
>>71226932
But is this criticizing that? Aren't they still doing the same thing? They first inadvertently made comics a kid's thing with the Code Authority, and eventually spun gold out of that shit and it wasn't until a few decades later they could make comics adult again but still strictly a cape game which it still is and only are there a few comics that could be considered even close to competing on the same stage.
They don't seem to be criticizing the big 2 in a way that shits on the fact they're more or less holding the American Industry hostage and then whatever they're marketing to becomes the norm of comics but just trying to control what they do.
>>
>>71226012
Rodriguez was also trying to throw J. Scott Campbell under the bus for his Spider-Gwen variants in an Outhousers article. He just randomly tacks on that, "But once they see works like the Cho sketch cover or the J.Scott covers, it puts the medium back in the basement-troll stereotype zone."

For the record, THESE are J. Scott Campbell covers he's referring to as being "tasteless".

It is simple. You can't take fiction seriously.

If Captain America were to say "I'm going to go kill all members of the KKK because it's the just thing to do!" the only people that would do that in real life are those that have severe mental issues. Comics are not meant to be taken as reality and should not be treated as such.

It IS that simple. What happens to comic characters is not some grand worldview or message to others. It is simply people being people indulging in their fantasies.

There is NOTHING wrong with fantasies. Doesn't matter if you enjoy killing people with machine guns, or running over them with a car and then beating them with a bat, or going through pipes stomping on a race of enslaved mushroom people that should be freed instead of murdered, or dressing someone up, or dressing somone down and raping them, or pretending you're the opposite gender, or robbing people of all their forks, or solving murders, or pretending you're an alien that gestates in human beings...etc and etc on and on

People around the world indulge in those things 24/7. Whether it is comics, movies or video games none of these things are what WE are. What we are is how we act to each other in the real world.

If any of the artists condemned for their art had actually kidnapped real people and forced them to take certain poses against their will then you could say something about them having reprehensible behavior. As of now all anyone is doing is just insulting humanity, its intelligence and attempting to murder culture.

>What if sexuality is an important part of the character or story.
It can be. I didn't say it's always for eye candy.

>If we're judging it solely by the single cover, the action is just as much eye candy as the sexuality since there's no story going on.
But there's violence in the story. There's more than just hot people getting sexy at each other. I can't speak for every reader, but I'd read these comics for the action before I'd read them for the hotness.

>Sexualization can also go into setting tone, characterization, countless aspects of the story.
Yeah, I thought I covered that.

>And why is it for comics to "grow up" they must do away with sexuality while most all other mediums can wear their's proudly.
"Growing up" means getting "realer" as comics become movies. Questions like "Why is she wearing that while fighting?" are asked by a mainstream audience and these companies don't want to tell them that these comics aren't made for them.
>>
>>71227186
Ealier in the same article, he basically says that he stands by what he said about Cho's drawing because America isn't psychologically evolved enough to not take that image sexually. In my mind, this comes off as Rodriguez saying that he's too immature to see a woman posing as anything other than sexual, but tries to blame America being behind the times instead for his own mixed up views.

How so? I'm not comparing sexualizing characters to blowing up planets. There's a difference in degrees of sexualization between the genders and that makes sense considering the largely male readership. That's not to say that men are never sexualized in comics.
>>

>condemning DC and Marvel for what they have done to the American comic industry is constructive. Someone saying "I don't like this, but I would if you changed this or that" can be seen as constructive criticism
Their criticism isn't valid, it's based off a poisoned view of women being inherently special and better than men, that they should not be subjected to the same FICTIONAL situations as men are in this material.

People should be brutalized and experience horrible tragedy in fiction because it's entertaining. We already know they do plenty of heroic things as well. And sexuality? Sex is responsible for everyone here being alive, pretty sure sexuality isn't evil despite what certain crazy people like to think.

The market shouldn't change to fit people that damaged worldviews, the people with damaged worldviews should be educated.

It doesn't sound like a very good Marvel or DC comic, but I'm sure it'll find an audience. The initial outrage about the Manara variant cover was that it was for a series that was trying to appeal to female readers as well as males. There was a larger conversation beyond "I don't like this because it's sexy." Of course the conversation goes in many ridiculous directions.

On the topic of getting realer: I didn't miss the old X-Men outfits when I saw the movie, but I can understand where you're coming from. I don't think it should all be thrown out, but these companies like keeping their comics like their movies. It's why One More Day happened.

No, One More Day happened because Quesada wanted Spider-Man unmarried, but didn't want him divorced or widowed.

I do agree that comics do (and always will) try to mimic the movies' superficial details if those movies succeed, though. Both companies at this point are watching the market for their product slowly trickle away, and are desperately looking for ways to bring in new readers.

The fact that they have their heads up their asses and seem to alienate more existing readers than they ever manage to bring in is unfortunate, but at least the attempt is understandable.

The problem is, it was a VARIANT cover. Meaning female readers who found the image uncomfortable or off-putting didn't actually have to buy it.

For that matter, due to the more limited nature of variant covers, most people would have to go out of their way to even know it existed in the first place, if not for the fact that we live in an era of manufactured outrage where everyone had to Tweet at everyone else how horrified they were by its very existence.

Women have been sexualized because women are intense figures of sexuality to men, INHERENTLY, not because of culture or programming. Men are the driving force of sexual contact and have been for many, many millennia due to their biology. The male brain being more preoccupied with sex than the female brain isn't a myth, men are the natural initiators and the ones that experience the urge far more of our two sexes. They're the one that have been given the vast majority of the responsibility when it comes to populating the race.

The fact men will always fantasize about women and wish to see those fulfilling certain biological signals displaying health (fat deposits on breasts, buttocks, fitness etc) is normal due to the biology.

Men will sexualize women but it's not evil, and they aren't wrong to satisfy themselves. No woman is meant to be insulted by it, they are merely pleasing themselves. Men and women should be treated as the toys they are in fiction, it's perfectly healthy.

I would personally like to see Hercules get a new comic with him topless and wrestling guys while oiled up and displaying his sexual prowess inbetween choking the heads off dragons/gods but I never once have been condemned for this by ANYONE my entire life whenever I've mentioned my sexual fantasies and wishes for media.

While men are constantly condemned for comments or fantasies when all they're doing is communicating their pleasure and happiness.

A rich, affluent, educated white woman accuses a poor, impoverished, and uneducated black man of rape. The black man professes his innocence. Both have evidence supporting their claims Who do you believe?

If they answer "the white woman" then they're racist. If they answer "the black man" they're sexist. And no matter how they answer, they're classist!

>tumblr nose

It's a medical condition called rosacea which Tumblr artists like to give their characters. In the early stages it manifests itself as a pronounced redness around the nose and cheeks, and in later stages the nose becomes large, bulbous and deformed. It's frequently associated with severe alcoholism.
>>

>I don't mind stylised stuff

Speaking of which, I hate it when people use the "You just don't like it because it's not House Style" excuse when people criticize this garbage.
The VAST MAJORITY of comics in my shelf aren't drawn in typical Marvel House style; hell, I even like chubby girls. This Squirrel-Girl is just repulsive in every way, it's last saving grace was that at least she wore makeup, but that was removed after the preview because I guess the artist was too lazy to add one extra color to the character

Talk about revisionist history.
Reddened noses and ears have been common in cartoons since newspaper comic strips. One of Disney's lead artists, Mary Blair, employed red noses and ears a lot.

The "tumblr style" is really "Penny Arcade style" which is really Stephen Silver style (Clerks cartoon art director I think, and Kim Possible art director) which is curvier Disney Sleeping Beauty style which is UPA-ified (geometric-shaped) Disney style which is the classic pears and spheres construction style with some specific stylization.

TL;DR tumblr style isn't new and it's laughable that you'd attribute it to a very recent artist.
>>
I really don't get the tone of this debate.
Cover posing doesn't have to make sense and really is more about evoking ideas.
What is it the artist's fault when you charge their work with your ideas? When the artist has something to say, you'll know. Oh Lord, will you ever know. They usually aren't very subtle about that.
So Spider Woman crouches with her ass upwards? Ever looked at a spider, moron?
Take one fucking step back from your political agenda and try to understand not everybody thinks about sex as much as you do.
Just because things are visually pleasing and evocative doesn't mean it's directly about sex.
And if it is, who are you to "slutshame"?

I really get the feeling this has never been about power or society, but about the puritan ideals and selfish interests of individuals afterwards packaged and sold as an ideological discourse claiming also a superior truth.

Nah, you're just ignorant. Of course reddening ears and noses are a common and old artistic technique, because of the way blood flows to them. That's why they turn red when drunk or cold or flushed.

"tumblr style" or "tumblr nose" is far more specific than just a "red nose" though, which is something you missed in your weak failed attempt at a gotcha. The tumblr style absolutely does come from Phobs, in fact, you can pin-point its genesis to a single image - this tutorial from 2010 that did the rounds on deviantart before the dA base migrated to tumblr and spread it there.

Mily Cyrus is seen as a symbol of female empowerment to the latest generation that is involved in counter culture movements, especially to girls, who take the form of the vocal minority on the Internet that complain about comic book variant covers, by referencing her (MC) these Internet Contrarians feel like they can't say anything without insulting themselves. Meh, sometimes it feels like she (and her writer McIntosh) make things up as they go. Like when they said Hitman encourages you to kill NPCs strippers and drag around their corpses to put them in sexy poses. What kind of fucking trope would that be?
But even ingoring that, they created the argument that pervasive = bad for society, that "the less you think you're affected by media the more you actually are", it's all just pseudo-science that analyses things on the most superficial level possible

>Zelda is a princess saved by Link? It means the game implies women are weak! pls ignore that she's a powerful and wise mage that carries weight of all her kingdom on her shoulders

>Zelda is a princess saved by Link? It means the game implies women are weak! pls ignore that she's a powerful and wise mage that carries weight of all her kingdom on her shoulders

Yeah, her analysis is bland, but the point of the princess video as I recall was that it's not bad by itself, but when you have dozens of save-the-princess games there's something off. A lot of them were "ironic" or retro. I liked it, but I don't think she devoted enough time to explore why exactly that particular trope is so resonant and pervasive.
>>
>>71234471
I would agree 100% with her if her point was just to show that overused tropes can make things bland, uninteresting, silly, or anything! But nope, the argument had to be that they harm society, like GTA supposedly teaches kids to become criminals. Hell, according to McIntosh Smash Bros teaches that only violence can solve problems. There's little to no difference between him and Thompson, except that the latter was rightly antagonized by gaming media while the former covers behind his lady while she gets all the praise possible

And yes, her videos ended up just being list of things. She starts quickly describing the trope, and then she shows examples to prove it exists. I'd say something more interesting would require the opposite order? I dunno
>>
>>71208008
Forget the art for a second, that dialogue is painful.
>>

>I would agree 100% with her if her point was just to show that overused tropes can make things bland, uninteresting, silly, or anything! But nope, the argument had to be that they harm society, like GTA supposedly teaches kids to become criminals.

That equivocation is pure naivete. Media is an immense influence on human psychology, if not the dominant one in modern society. Obviously GTA doesn't teach kids to become criminals. But media helps construct our understanding of reality, how we perceive the world. And our perception of the world determines how we act and think.

It's why you have parents concerned over what cartoons and whatnot are teaching their children. They may not be right about what they say, but they simply recognise their power. Itäs why we have critics to explore values and aesthetics of cultural products. It's why there are marketers and propaganda departments and politicians who want to use how art and media defines reality.

I don't advocate censoring art or media, but you need to recognise their power and influence. Do you think Call of Duty games influence people's political views? It's a series notable for it's popularity with the working class, what does that say about the values of the games, the franchise, and it's philosophy? Arab kids grow up playing games where they shoot themselves, how will that effect them psychically.

The best response to art and media that may be a poor influence is of course to counter it, to create, provide, and/or support something that teaches something better.
>>

Yup
The original kickstarter stated she was going to cover 6 (or 8? Can't remember) different kind of tropes in one video per each by the end of 2012
She covered only 3 of them in like 4 videos
And things aren't going to get better, because this year they announced she was going to make new series about positive female characters and negative male tropes
She recently made the first one about positive women, and it felt like basically advertising for yet another pixelated indie game nobody cares about (people say that because she weirdly talks more about mechanics and shit than female roles)

She described the thing in the pic as a positive female character because she's a silent protagonist, a trope that is usually tied to men, and that makes it funny because it means she fits perfectly in the "Ms. Male" negative trope she described elsewhere
>>
>>71234777
Oh boy. I can hardly contain my excitement.

Shilling out for indie games? I can't say I'm surprised.

Has she said anything about Mirror's Edge's protagonist, or is that to come in a later video? I know she was supposedly involved in some "simpler controls" for ME2 that everyone got in a shitfit about.

>>
>>71234715
"Media" is vague, though. News programs and video games both fall under "media" but one's clearly going to be more impactful and taken more seriously than the other. I think we don't give people enough credit in assuming people can't distinguish between reality and the graphics on the screen.

Children might be different, sure, but then that's why we have the ESRB. It's not the medium's fault for shitty parents who can't be bothered to invest a shit in their child's life.

Don't forget that she was supposed to make 12 videos with all of the stretch goals, and that these were all supposed to be on DVD and sent to backers by December 2012. Also, the "production quality" was supposed to be increased, but it's practically indistinguishable from her earlier videos.

I can understand that a Muslim kid will be negatively affected when playing CoD... but a KID should not be playing CoD in the first place, at least according to the ESRB, while a (reasonable) Muslim adult would probably be able to understand the cultural context under which the game was created

>one's clearly going to be more impactful and taken more seriously than the other.

You don't really understand how people take information. It's not a question of something taken seriously, it's a question of something taken in at all. Even things you don't agree with will impact your perception of reality. The best remedy is awareness of where we get our information.

>I think we don't give people enough credit in assuming people can't distinguish between reality and the graphics on the screen.

Reality is our perception of it.
