I think Gem society is very expansionist, and either fundamentally warlike or built around serving some cryptic "supreme being." They definitely seem like an engineered lifeform rather than a natural one, what with the mannequin thing and the reproductive method where they're manufactured rather than born. Rose's fascination with "unique experiences" is another hint, I think: There's very little room for individuality among Gems, even in the ruling class.

I always thought the gems were a virus, considering the imagery in the Kindergarten. (I mean look at this thing). The first time I watched an episode, I got the feeling that none of them were the main character/hero. A true ensemble cast.

After watching for a while, I've come to the conclusion that Rose is a Mary Sue who died in a tragically romantic way. Everyone was her friend, but her friends aren't as strongly friends with each other as they were with her. Her lover, her son, and her goofy best friend argued over who deserved to have her in their lives.

Pearl's obsession with her made me realize this.
