I don't know if essential is the right word, but story-wise it make sense. A story isn't made of solely essential plot point. Lord of the Ring will be cut in Half if it was the case.

But it is coherent in the chain of events. John got retcon power, Terezi learned about it and after seeing the death of everything, decided to make change to make things better, for her and everyone else.

On of the reason that cause Terezi downfall and being a self-doubting fuck-up is her being forced to kill Vriska. To not become a useless rag, Terezi had to make sure her past-self wouldn't kill Vriska. So I wouldn't say her being alive as essential to the story, but it was nevertheless an inevitable consequence of John fixing the timeline. Given who give him the instruction, Vriska not ending up alive was very unlikely.

I miss the much longer dialogues between the characters, that gave us a window into their personality and here he is reaping the fruits of old character tropes even going so far t make the last year of nothing and some meteor character development mean fuck all. Like he regrets the direction the comic went.

I just want to feel like he cares. Nothing is more uninteresting than a creator bored with their own work.

All of B1 Jack Noir's prototypings were planned from the start and he was the big bad. The mystery of Lord English wasn't going to be a big deal for non-intermission Homestuck proper, but gained so much steam that he became a focal point of the story.

All player names were submitted by users, although by the time of the B2 kids he could pick literally any permutation of letters from suggestions, and the ancestor trolls' names were just drawn from the same forum threads that suggested their descendants' names.

Shipping was never planned any further than flirts between kids at all until trolls. The idea of John/Rose has ALWAYS been hilarious to Hussie. The idea of horses existing has ALWAYS been hilarious to Hussie. The troll act was supposed to be WAY shorter (like a cursory overview with no details shorter) with fewer characters, and even fewer making it to the end of it. The second batch of human players was planned as early as ectobiology. Gamzee Eridan and Nepeta not supposed to be genuinely liked by anyone ever and steps were repeatedly taken to remove interest in them. The Trickster arc originally contained a joke about Tumblr users being unable to take a joke, which had to be removed because Tumblr users were unable to take a joke.

A fight with a crazed self-centred musician wasn't supposed to happen and consequently neither was the current music for Jade: Retrieve Package, Jade's bass solos, the Midnight Crew intro flash, and some others from music player updates.

Jack's prototypings were not planned from the start. Hussie specifically mentioned putting a lot of weird stuff like dead animals in jars in Dave's room to allow for a variety of prototyping possibilities.

It's very easy to tell when Hussie came up with certain ideas. Take the blood castes for example. Early on in Hivebent the narration makes a throwaway joke about troll aristocrats literally having blue blood. Then he thought hey this is a neat concept. It still wasn't a big deal until later though - the trolls didn't seem to have the rule about typing in their blood colours from the start, for example, with someone wondering why Sollux types in yellow and not red/blue, when that shouldn't even be a question later once the setting was more fleshed out. You can tell when he came up with the romance system too, and tons of other things.

The kid's eye colours only started popping up in A5A2 as well so it's clear that the hemotyping concept led to the idea that the kid's type in their eye colours. And I see what you mean about terezi wondering why sollux doesn't type in red and blue but it can be handwaved by the idea that hemotyping is not necessarily something that every troll does, some may just choose their favourite colour(s)
