It's about seniority, not about some grand idea of "purpose". They're the three Golden Age heroes whose books were never canceled or reimagined in the Silver Age or thereafter. The Flash, the Green Lantern, Aquaman, etc., they were all heavily altered, becoming entirely new characters. The Trinity endured much as they'd always been.

I still haven't seen it.

Olaf was a frankly unnecessary part of the movie that was designed to appeal to the Minion crowd. The movie would've been much better without him and his bullshit.

Slightly too much toilet humour, otherwise fantastic. That Flight of the Valkyries chase scene complete with exploding bats is the funnest thing I've seen in any movie in years.
