I was watching pic related when I realized something, why aren't gag cartoons a thing in the same way as gag anime? Gag anime make up some of my favorites (Gintama, Nichijou) and I don't see why it couldn't be more popular with western audiences. The only examples I could think of that fit the bill would be some classic cartoons, Chowder, and TTGo for a more modern cartoon (which I don't actually watch).
I didn't even think of TTGo when I first started writing this post so there could very well be some modern shows I'm missing out on, but I think my point still stands, why is this genre/style pretty much non-existent in modern day western cartoons?

Gag cartoons is what basically dominated and had the most wide spread influence in not just the west but the whole damn world.
I wouldn't be able to explain why these cartoons have slowly died down but I guess it's a mix lower costs on animations (not Hannah Barbara low but lowish) and the new influx of cartoon creators wanting their work to be more story and continuity driven,
That said Gumball is one of the best gag cartoons I've seen.

Does anyone else think the Oz stories are untapped potential for /co/ adaptations? The biggest one I know about is the Marvel comics adaptations of the first few books, but there are 14 books to work from (even more if you count the canon ones not written by Baum) and tons of potential.
Imagine feature length animated adaptations, or alt-universe takes on the universe in comics. Why does Alice in Wonderland get all the attention while Wizard of Oz gets ignored?

Because it got a Disney cartoon and Oz was MGM... though Return to Oz was Disney. But 80s Disney. And Oz Great and Powerful was a bit of an underwhelmer critically IIRC.
Anyway, it's good Alice got the "attention" of Tim Burton and not the Oz stories, because all the potential would be screwed once it became Tim Burton's Wizard of Oz. It'd just be a Tim Burton movie with ruby slippers and a yellow road that spirals far too much to be useful as a road.

I love Baum and I storytimed Henrique Fernandez's adaptation of the first book last week.
I think that the issue is that Oz is too unique and people only wants more of the MGM version, is a lose-lose situation for anyone that wants to adapt it and baum's other works suffer a similar case

However the Dark Knight Trilogy was terrible. The only saving grace in that Movie was Heath Ledger and even he wasn't as good as normies think he was.
