Aaron's putting focus on Walt and Portia's relationship, building an impressive tower of cards on how they relate to one another, and then will set the whole thing on fire.Portia's fucking gonna get murdered, and Walt will get involved in the murder and put a stop to it all. It's inevitable.

Also a possibility he will use Dottie as his anchor to help keep calm after her death, maybe even build a romantic relationship past their friendship, but it's not guaranteed.

When your animation has primarily been aimed at children for several decades, it forms a cultural stigma that's pretty hard to break.

Adult humor cartoons get by mostly because making people laugh has always been something cartoons in the west were good for.

Adult action cartoons do exist, but the storytelling medium of animation in the west is still stuck in old mentalities of catering to children. Probably when this generation gets older, it'll become a bit more accepted as a catch all medium (at least more than it is now), but until then, it is what it is.

I've actually been thinking bout this too, anon.

Compared to Japan's animation output, shows in the West seem to have less variety in terms of genre. The only successful American animated drama I can think of is Bojack, and that's still a comedy-drama.

France's "Lastman" felt so fresh to me because it tells engaging story in an animated, Western context. Could it ever happen in the States? I imagine that the expensiveness of animation is a huge obstacle and it's cheaper to make primetime comedies.

Thats a symptom, not a problem. It causes a hell of a lot of secondary problems, but the "boiled down" problem lies with the core and senior staff.

IMO, the core problem is that Marvel comics seems to be trying to give its "audience" what it thinks it wants, but has repeatedly misidentified a) who its true audience was and b) how do deliver upon the perceived wants.

i.e. listening to highly politicised online forums and delivering a product that puts precedence on that message over quality storytelling.

I also think that there is a huge amount of arrogance at Marvel. Possibly due to the success of the movies, possibly due to various media sites brownnosing when they can. In their mind, they can do no wrong.

Bad editing.

Marvel lets talent wither and die instead of cultivating it, and teaching promising new writers how to write comic books. Look at how fucking DULL Black Panther is. It's because the writer, who can write, can't pace a comic book. A good editor would teach him that, and the book would be fucking worth a buy.

We see that over and over in Marvel, they take promising kids, squeeze them dry, toss them out, pick up new writers. There's no /investment/ and that is the real heart of the problem.
