About 75 years ago, this story would have been 12 or so pages long.

50-40 years ago, it would have been 22 pages - an entire issue. Maybe even an annual, an 86 page 'novel-length' epic.

In the 80's, this would have been an epic three part saga, possibly one of those crossovers they did between annuals.

In the 90's/last decade we would have gotten an event with little precedence. All of the setup would have been in the book, and the tie-ins, while intrusive to regular readers, would have at least attempted to serve the story or, in the opposite case, not let the event take hold of the ongoing story.

And now it's come to this.

The French fictional character Judex is a mysterious avenger who dresses in black and wears a slouch hat and cloak, created by Louis Feuillade and Arthur Bernède. Originally conceived as a heroic version of the criminal character Fantômas, Judex appears to have been an inspiration for the American pulp hero The Shadow, who was himself an inspiration for Batman.[1]


Gibson's characterization of The Shadow laid the foundations for the archetype of the superhero, including stylized imagery and title, sidekicks, supervillains, and a secret identity. Clad in black, The Shadow operated mainly after dark as a vigilante in the name of justice, and terrifying criminals into vulnerability. Gibson himself claimed the literary inspirations upon which he had drawn were Bram Stoker's Dracula and Edward Bulwer-Lytton's "The House and the Brain."[5] Another possible inspiration for The Shadow is the French character Judex; the first episode of the original Judex film serial was released in the United States as The Mysterious Shadow, and Judex's costume is rather similar to The Shadow's. French comics historian Xavier Fournier notes other similarities with another silent serial, The Shielding Shadow, whose protagonist had a power of invisibility, and considers The Shadow to be a mix between the two characters. In the 1940s, some Shadow comic strips were translated in France as adventures of Judex.[7]

This episode was pure fucking kino and had an oddly dark ending for a kid's show.

I personally have some mixed feeling about it. Characters change personality whenever it's convenient for the plot. They should have established before that the blonde girl didn't like to be forced by her mother, because throughout the whole thing she seemed fine with it. Same thing with the cross eyed guy. He was like a 60's cartoon villain when he was chasing the kids, but suddenly at the end he's just "a brute with a heart of gold".

And they totally forgot about the blond guy. There was no conclusion to her "romance" with him. They should've showed him hitting up on some other girl using the same pick-up line he used at the rooftop. Actually, they should have scraped that character completely. The whole romantic triangle subplot was terribly handled.

And how the fuck did they go from Britain to Paris on a train?

So the whole series is basically about Myrtle trying to overcome her blindness with her other senses and her new step mother who is trying to do less good with the help of Myrtle, whilst also in a wacky surreal world. The episodes can lend themselves to many creative plots ala Courage The Cowardly Dog, an episode can be a new surreal adventure, an episode can be a parody/satire of the superhero genre whilst still trying to do it's own thing, and episode can focus on the emotions/psychology of a character and what makes them tick, but still keep it lighthearted, an episode can be a parody of a nior movie or any other movie genere, there can be episoes than be a metaphor for trends and stuff (similar vein to South Park), there can be a villian of the week like episode but still be unique, and there are episodes that can start out mundane but have a surreal factor that comes in during act 2, basically slice of life gone wrong. The type of humor is more like early SpongeBob like humor (Seasons 1-3) but a little bit more meta.

What
