I just have such joy whenever I see him on screen, even when he is evil he is enjoyable and he is usually pretty relaxed about most of what is going on around him

As much as I enjoy the humor I like the moments when he gets serious the most, but thats mainly because he doesn't act seriously so much of the time that the few times he does it serves as a reminder that he's literally evil personified.

If Avatar proved so successful with western audiences, why haven't western studios put out more shows in the same vein?
And by that I mean shows with more focus on character development and a serialized continuous storyline instead of a strictly episodic show with unending self-contained episodes.
The only recent western cartoons I can think of that fit this criteria would be Steven Universe, Young Justice, Wakfu, Clone Wars/Rebels and Venture Bros. They all have very strong fan bases, with YJ even getting a third season after apparent cancellation, so why isn't this style of animated series more common nowadays?

In the Steven Universe timeline the Confederacy won the Civil War due to Crystal Gem intervention. They were told that they were helping these rebels escape an oppressive dictatorship. When they found out about the slavery they ended up forcibly holding hostage the Southern leaders. After all of this, the two warring nations merged, and an agreement was made that the Gems will not interfere in human conflicts, while human governments will let the Gems handle magic shit.
