I get that, but then why are relatively faithful anime adaptations often popular. Dragonball and Jojo are what comes to mind immediately for me. Especially the newest version for the latter because at this point every weeb out there has some knowledge of what happens in Jojo. I can understand slight differences, but complete alterations? The GITS movie was like remaking Star Wars starring Lucky Starkiller and the Resistance against Dark Xanadu of the Universal Federation.

Want to see it because I read the shit out the series as a kid, but I didn't particularly like the "adult voices in kids" and even the "changed funny sign doesn't use the same letters as the original line". That might sound anal, but it's a key part of the joke.
