Part of it is just their body types, how small they are and how smooth their skin is, they look soft in a feminine but are clearly boyish. But, for me, most of it comes just from the idea that they are young. Character who look young but are actually older (for magic or art style reasons) don't do much for me. I like Ken because he's small and cute and looks vulnerable and soft, but also because he's naive and doesn't understand grown up situations. He's innocent and manipulable.

I think for most people that I know it's mainly the body type, though. A lot of them will like characters who are teenage or so but look a lot younger or a lot of the same features of a child.
