The Nasa is doing research on a food program for Mars, which happens to be plant-based:
>Purdue University, as well as the Johnson and Kennedy Space Centers and NASA Ames Research Center, are investigating approximately 5-10 plants that will be grown hydroponically to provide not only the energy and nutrients, but also the oxygen for humans habitating in Mars and lunar bases.

Thoughts?

Well I mean, what else are they supposed to do?

>Mars
>lunar base
Pick one.

Well, what strikes me is that the Nasa is taking a plant-based direction on its way to the most efficient way to feed people to and on Mars. I don't think these guys are dumb and they aren't silly vegan propagandists either.

I dunno, what is there to think about?

Many people have been doing this in their basements, the only difference is that research labs do it in a closed environment that simulates mars. However since this homegrowmen operation will probably be taking place beneath the surface of mars, conditions are close to your basement than you'd expect.

Are cockroaches and alge part of the Mars terraforming plan?
>>

It's to provide a breathable atmosphere too.

It's pretty obvious that plants would be more efficient and easier. Everyone knows that. Nobody cares though. And it's not "the" NASA. It's just NASA.

Right. We read the article.

The plants will nourish the astronauts in a multi-faceted way...on a dead and completely desolate planet incapable or harboring complex life without the intervention of "intelligent" beings.

Bringing animals now would be a waste of precious resources, there's an overabundance of resources terrestrially.

Algae need water, heat and C02 in order to produce oxygen and other greenhouse gasses. Probably not in their "immediate needs" roster.
