Your mother knows her stuff. Proper homemade rich dark fruit cakes are god tier. Unfortunately many other industrial versions don't even come close. Some of the worst I've tried are those with the multi coloured glace fruit on top. Wth they don't even bother to prepare the fruit properly which leaves a bitter aftertaste.

What's a good recipe for fruitcake? I've never gotten to try it.

I made a fruitcake last year which I've been spraying with rum periodically. I'm going to break it out on Christmas.

I actually love fruit cake, even the shitty storebought stuff. I don't eat it because it has too many calories. Same reason I am not pouring eggnog down my throat.

We are mostly sedentary now so we should develop lower-calorie food traditions. Stop taunting me with delicious things I can't have.

I mean, you can't buy just one slice of it, you have to buy a whole cake. And no one else likes it so either I eat it all or it goes to waste. Why no single-serving options? I get this with food so much. I just can't eat the bulk sizes of stuff they sell.

Shop around. I regularly see small-size fruitcakes as well as half and quarters for sale in my local markets around this time of year.

I've never had fruit cake, so this year I finally picked up one from Collin Street Bakery which is supposed to be amazing. I'm excited, hoping I can break into it tonight when I get back to the family.

This is how I make fruit cake as well.
Actually, I start way back in June, when cherries are in season. I make what we call "Cherrybim", which is cherries (pitted, of course), soaked in rum for months. The old timers here would use the cherries in fruit cake, and then use the resulting cherry "brandy" as a cold medicine, lol. Anyway, I digress.....
So, I use the cherrys from the cherrybim, plus the other fruits, which I start soaking at the end of Setp/beginning of October. Then, I bake the cake at the beginning of November, wrap it in cheesecloth and place in a well sealed container (no plastic). Every other day, I pour more rum over the cake, until Thanksgiving. Then I make sure the cheesecloth is well soaked with rum, rewrap the cake, and let it age until Christmas.
It's probably the most popular thing I make at Christmas, everyone goes nuts on it. I make 2 kinds, one with rum, and one with whiskey.

Fruitcake is very freezer friendly, so you could always cut a section off for now, then wrap it well (first in wax paper, then in foil) and freeze the rest for later. I do that with my fruit cakes after the holidays, because I always make more than we can eat. Fruitcake in February is awesome.

Caribbean black cake is awesome. The fruit is macerated until it becomes a pulp, so the resulting cake has a different consistency than the jeweled-looking type of fruitcake.

I actually had some topkek today because they give it to you on coach buses here in Turkey, and it got me into them beyond the fact that holy shit it's called topkek.
