What spices/herbs are the most overrated?
Myself, I'd say sage, it's pretty neat but ultimately bland, I could do without it.
saffron
basically an extremely expensive food coloring
Bay leaf - make a stew/casserole with and make exactly the same stew/casserole with.
Taste and tell me the difference.
>protip - you can't
>>7172605
Curry
>>7172605
I couldn't imagine 4chan without it.
Cloves WILL ruin any ham you put them in.
FACT
Parsley.
>imparts zero flavor in like 95% of its uses
>muh color tho!
>>7172626
This. Any flavor you do get from Parsley is largely bitter anyway.
>>7172612
you're right, there's no discernible difference between a stew/casserole made with bay and the exact same stew/casserole made with bay. QED
>>7172621
not necessarily, but for some reason people feel the need to take a shotgun and blast 500 cloves into their ham when a few are more than enough
>>7172647
>parsley has a metric fuckton of flavour
None of it that I want to taste though.
I think ginger goes really well with a lot of meat dishes, but it's one of the few spices I can't stand on its own.
>>7172649
Dunno mate, maybe you've been using spoiled leaves
>>7172626
Agreed, but there is merit in it's color. Just saiyin. For me cilantro is something that must be used sparingly. It doesn't taste like soap, but it overwhelms dishes imo. Sage is fairly shitty but has it's situational merits
Paprika. I simply can't taste the shit unless it's smoked.
cilantro
>>7173073
when ur genetically deficient
>>7172605
Fucking mint.
Fuck your mojitos and mint juleps. And for the love of fuck keep that shit off my lamb.
>>7173077
Meh I usually can't even tell if cilantro is in a dish or not. But because of it I find blue moon putrid. I've had similar beers Brewed in the same fashion minus the coriander and I can actually drink more than one of them
>>7173178
This.
Mint is a scourge
>>7172605
Chives. I mean, do you wanna be a garlic or do you wanna be an onion? Make your fucking mind up!
>>7172608
This desu senpai
>>7173783
i don't think you quite understood my post.
Salt. People have to add it to everything, but it's bland as fuck. Just watch people sprinkling salt over the top of their fried fast foods. That stuff is already filled with loads of salt. If salt had any flavor at all, they would realize that. They would taste it there. But it's just a placebo, and they need the therapeutic wrist action of adding salt to their food.
How the fuck can an herb be 'neat'?
>>7173821
Uh I think your mouth might actually be broken
>>7173821
>People have to add it to everything, but it's bland as fuck.
I need a break from /ck/.
>>7173972
Nah, you just need to filter/hide the posts from the retards. It makes the board a lot more enjoyable.
>>7172608
But that's plain wrong!
Can't have a bouillabaisse w/o saffron, mang!
apply yourself!!
Oregano seems pretty overrated to me, but maybe I'm talking out of my ass
>>7172605
Garlic.
Jesus christ stop putting garlic in fucking everything, dearest father, there are different spices.
>>7172626
You use parsley with garlic ALWAYS. It breaks down the shitty smell garlic can have.
>>7175490
>>Garlic
Shit nigga! Don't you know where you're postning!?
>All the answers ITT
Awful
Most overrated is chilli. People load up on it like the dish is a vindaloo because "Some liek it hot dude lmao" and complete ruin the balance. So many people believe that spiciness = flavour.
Well, this isn't really a herb/Spice but red onion.
There is always a better onion than you, fuck you red onion.
>>7175597
the thing about chilli is how much is 'overpowering' varies greatly depending on your tolerance. i've started making much milder dishes recently just because i don't trust myself not to set people's mouths on fire - i have a very high tolerance from being a retarded teenager who would drink dave's insanity sauce like cheap vodka
tarragon
>>7172608
You've been buying shit saffron then, or you have a shit palette. Pick one
>>7173178
Mint has its place in drinks (and obviously gum, toothpaste etc), but I can't think of a single food that's improved by its inclusion, other than possibly tzatziki.
Mint can never blend into the background or enhance a flavour, it can only be front and centre, taking over the experience.
Fuck mint in food.
>>7178444
Lamb with mint sauce?
>>7176842
>mfw buying Russian tarragon by accident instead of French
>>7178444
what about raita
>ultimately bland
Your mom is ultimately bland you fucking retard. Seriously, 'bland' has pretty much become synonymous with 'I'm an underage dumbass with no palate at all' around here.
>>7178444
Mint and chilli peas
>>7178509
Japanese food is bland.
>>7178515
eat your cereals and stfu
>>7172618
I see what ya did there.
>>7178495
Hell no.
A good raita will have a bit of red chilli powder, a bit of salt, and cumin seeds.
Does sauces count?
>>7173199
>can't taste cilantro
>can't stand blue moon due to coriander
Wut
>>7179414
my friend always said blue moon tastes like soap
he was right.
>>7179440
Water maybe but soap?
