>Life hacks can look exciting, and leave us wanting to try to make our lives a little bit easier by following them.

>Suzanne Dale, from Sale, Greater Manchester, saw an opportunity to make a quick and easy cheese on toast snack

>The Facebook post advised readers to turn their toasters onto one side, and slot their cheese-topped bread in sideways.

>As she tried this, her toaster burst into flames, and she had to quickly cast it out of the window so as not to start a fire in the house.

>The unfortunate woman told the Manchester Evening News: “I just thought ‘oh I’ll try that’. I don’t know why, I have griddles and everything to make cheese on toast.

>“I thought it might be a faster way of making cheese on toast.
>“Lots of people said ‘I was going to try this I thought it was a good idea.’”
>>
>>7100442
I tried this in college to make a tuna melt. It went well until the toaster thing popped and ejected the melt and it landed cheese down.
>>
>>7100442
How the hell did it set the toaster on fire?

My idiot coworker did this last time I went to his place. He just kind of stared at it and sat back down. Didn't clean it up or anything.
>>
>>7100475
She probably put on a lot of cheese which then melted off on to the heating element. The cheese ignited and that's basically a mini grease fire.
>>
why are people so stupid /ck/

are british people so poor they don't have broilers as standard kitchen equipment?
>>
>>7100509

no, we have toasters in addition to broilers (which we call the grill)

>How the hell did it set the toaster on fire?

The toaster is designed to vent heat up and out of the bread slots but when you turn it on it's side, the heat can't escape easily and eventually causes the toaster to melt and burst into flames.
>>
>>7100442
Why the fuck would you do that?

We have fucking grills for cheese on toast. It's not even any slower. Put it onto the wire pan, and stick it under the grill. Takes less time than turning your toaster on it's side
>>
reddit: not even once
>>
>>7100518

the grill is often slower as it takes some time to heat up.
>>
>they dont have toasters ovens

why do you guys still have pop up toasters? america moved on to convection ovens a long time ago
I cant remember the last time I saw an old toaster like that. Honestly it was probably around the same time I last saw a rotary phone
>>
>>7100543
wot, simple quick way to make toast, pop it in, and it pops up when done, literally no easier way to make toast
>>
>>7100518
I'm not going to dirty up a pan with greasy butter or pam spray if there's a faster method with less clean up.
>>
>>7100543

because pop up toasters are more efficient for the purpose of toasting bread than convection ovens?

It's a pan with a wire grill on it. Put bread on it and when that side is cooked, flip it, put your cheese on, and finish it off. There is literally zero clean up and no spray needed
>>

I knew a similar feel due to my parent's refusal to buy anything healthy. It certainly creates an addiction to you. In the end, I managed to quit cold turkey two big things, anything sugary/overly sweet, anything overly salted and anything even remotely overly fatty. Not saying fat and sugar have to be such an evil but chances are with your lifestyle, like mine had been, it is. Now I eat healthily and the only non-alcoholic drinks I consume is water (preferably ice cold) and tea. It's hard but in time you wont miss it.

Why are 'life hacks' so infuriating? Why do people get such an erection over "if you do this weird thing in just this particular weird way then you can save 0.001 seconds!" bullshit rather than just learning how to do things properly and not having to learn a different trick to get every single thing done?

If we were only doing one thing then perhaps your kewl little trick would be better. But in the real world where people want to do hundreds of different things, it's enormously more efficient if we can learn a smaller number of techniques that can be broadly applied.

To turn off appliances.

Britain uses a higher household electrical voltage than most countries (230V compared to America's 120V) so most electrical things are over engineered for safety.

But it does mean that appliances such as electric kettles are more practical.

I come from a family that doesn't eat toast that much and usually uses a panini press or the griddle to make "toast" (grilled cheese or paninis). When I moved out and met other people and found out how much toast other people eat, the need for a pop up toaster oven made sense. Some families/cultures just eat a shit load of toast (Brits come to mind, but I'm sure they're not alone) so the need for convenient and fast toast necessitates a dedicated appliance.

A toaster is a hollow box.
If its tilted, what would be the top, turns into a angle which traps heat.
At some point, either the plastic casing ignites, or the cheese for the bread.

So if you want to tilt your toaster, you need to make sure the heat will still escape.
If the side is flat, you need to put something under it.

1. The fuse/breaker in the consumer unit protects the circuit. It is fused to the maximum current for the entire circuit, which in a standard UK mains ring is about 32A.
2. Each BS1363 plug is capabable of delivering a maximum of 13A. At 230V that's around 3kW. The fuse in the plug therefore protects the flexible power cord that is plugged into the socket. The fuse is sized appropriately for the size of the wires within the cable.
3. If the device has a fuse, the fuse in the device is there to protect the device. It is sized appropriately to protect the device.

So at each step you down-fuse to only the appropriate rating. This means that if you plug in say, a 100W laptop power supply:

1. The circuit is fused to 32A
2. The cable between the socket (13A) & the device (0.5A) is fused to 3A
3. The device is fused to 0.5A

If you didn't have the fuse at the plug you'd either need all cables capable of carrying 13A max. (which would mean everything had big bulky cables) or you run the risk of the cable catching fire.

No. No you wouldn't. Electrical devices running on the same voltage with different amp requirements can use different size cables without risk of fire. You were doing alright up until you said that.
