Every time I see this, I'm still astonished at the fact that this is a popular dish in flyover land. There is a restaurant built around putting watery, grade F beef gruel over prepackaged pasta and garnishing it with half a ton of classic American corpse yellow cheese product and that amazes me.

I think maybe in the US pies are more often than not sweet and a dessert item and a lot of people don't really think about meat pies anyway so a fish pie is just really foreign. that and a lot of people are put off by fish heads already (minus the pie) so to have all of that sticking out of the pie looks really weird and maybe gross and alien. that and a lot of flyovers don't even like fish (minus maybe canned tuna).
I wouldn't mind trying it and the heads sticking out seem like a british humor thing.
We have pretty awesome savory pies here in the USA. Here's just one example from NYC, these are pretty good and they'll ship them to you too.

yeah, they're 'technically' sandwiches, but that doesn't mean they're good. putting a piece of shit between two pieces of bread would 'technically' be a sandwich, too, but I wouldn't want to eat it.

It can be made into gourmet food, as longs as the pike is on the smaller side. Pike quenelles are really delicious for example.

Fish pies are literally garbage to most people here. Even though it's not actually unsanitary unless you really fuck up, it still sets off a gag reflex because of it.
Then you add in the bonus morbidness of your dinner having a face and people are weirded out.

But british style baked beans are good. They are nice and tangy. And traditional british food- pork pies, roasts, meat pies, shepards pie, etc. - are delicious, if not a little heavy.
Also, I have a freind who puts sugar free vanilla pudding on toast and tops it with an egg that he fried by microwaving on a paper plate. He says that the pudding gives it that "sweetness" it needs, without adding any sugar. He also eats like 200 grams of protein a day. That's the worst thing I've eaten.
There's a £200 prize for anyone who can come up with a cheaper meal.

Chip butties aren't fancy or complex, they're a simple high carb high starch fix. If I want a more flavorful sandwich I make or get something else, but they're good for what they are.
As someone from NY, I don't really consider it pizza as I know it, it's more like a dinner pie.
However, pizza or not, Chicago style pies are incredible. Who cares what they're called? I call em delicious.
Buy it or if you have something that can maintain a 100-108/113 degrees F then just use culture from one you bought or powder culture.. Youtube would have more info. I used a portable frying pan filled with water (to moderate temperature fluctuations) with a glass cooking plate/bowl inside holding the beans/natto with tin foil on top to retain heat.
To seal in the juices. It's a very old method of cooking: coat food with clay (or dough, or a salt crust, etc.) then toss it in a fire or oven and let it cook. Then the clay/dough/salt is removed at the end of cooking and the food inside is served.

In the 30s this was known as a Hoover sandwich, 2 pieces of bread with toast in the middle, they are about 85 years short.
I've had it, too. It's really not bad. But, like Japanese natto, it's not the taste that's the issue. It's the slimy, gooey texture it tends to acquire.

desu, adding sliced cheese to things like this is fairly common in korea and dates back to the korean war when food was scarce and civilians would trade things with US soldiers' commissary. seeing as how i see korean banchan, my guess this was just from some random person staying in korea making a quick dinner of instant noodles (also very popular) and some gas station sushi.
