Why aren't you vegan yet?
Psyche! Don't care.
Just post your favorite vegan recipes. Vegan Thanksgiving recipes would be appreciated too, and gluten free ones would be nice since I apparently have Celiac disease. I already have an awesome green bean casserole recipe though so don't bother with that.

(For any trolls eager to give their uneducated opinions on vegan food: fuck off, retards!

>>
>that feel when you eat a whole food, plant-based diet but you don't want to be associated with "vegans" because people associate the word with sickly hippies and hipsters

It's hard to do serious research into nutrition and not see that a diet of unrefined plant foods and exclusion of animal foods is likely to be the most beneficial diet, but animal rights people who chose their diet for the animals' sake and live on junk food make everyone else look bad
>>
>>5960621
I've never tried them but it sounds fucking gross. I have tried meat before and know it's fucking gross. Would rather have a burrito either way.
>>
>>5960631
I always thought dietary vegans made ethical vegans look bad (all of them I've come across were huge snobs and didn't understand veganism and that there are legitimate reasons to become vegan that don't revolve around oneself, and that some people put their priorities elsewhere), but whatever floats your boat.
>>
>>5960631
What if I did it for the animals sake and don't live on junk food?
>>
>>5960637
I've never met a dietary vegan that wasn't a hypocrite (would still eat store-bought meat and cheese). And most of the ethical vegans I've met are either huge fucking snobs or give up after a few months or couple years.

I actively avoid telling people that I'm vegan because almost every vegan I've met fucking sucks.
>>
>>5960631

>It's hard to do serious research into nutrition and not see that a diet of unrefined plant foods and exclusion of animal foods is likely to be the most beneficial diet

I'm currently doing my dietetic internship and have had to read shitloads of research from medical journals and this is not considered to be the case.

Yes of course a healthy vegetarian or even vegan diet is going to be healthier than someone who lives off nothing but taco bell, which is what the vast majority of the studies that suggest what you say are based upon.
>>
>>5960655
I've considered supplementing my diet with a few dumpstered eggs per week, do you think that would be sufficient to make up for the lack of animal products elsewhere?
>>
>>5960647
As an ethical vegan I think I can give you a reason why you might think ethical vegans are snobs.

When I first went vegan I was super nice to everyone, then I realized just the second people learned I was vegan they would start being huge bastards to me. Thought if I was somehow nicer to them they would be nicer to me but that wasn't the fucking case. Realized it was pointless trying to be nice to those cunts so now I just want everyone dead. Been vegan 5 years myself by the way, but wanting everyone to die started in the first year. Now I just expect everyone to be bastards and I've stopped trying not to talk down to them and am open about my disgust for their behavior. I think it's too unrealistic to expect ethical vegans to be nice all the time when meat eaters constantly harass them and gloat about funding extreme animal abuse and environmental destruction.
>>
>>5960659

If you are vegan and especially if you aren't currently taking b12 supplements then you still won't get nearly enough, but at least it's something.

I assume you mean dumpster diving, but whatever I don't judge. Hell, eggs are good for way paste their "expiration" date.
>>
>>5960661

>I think it's too unrealistic to expect ethical vegans to be nice all the time when meat eaters constantly harass them

While I would never do this, in all fairness this is because they've probably encountered so many intolerable cunts who were vegan and never stopped talking about it that they assume all vegans are like that, at least to some extent.
>>
>>5960655
Don't act like you know everything about nutrition. You know the basics, shut up. I've actually read tons of the studies showing a vegan diet to be more beneficial and they are not merely comparing it to people who live off Taco Bell. I know for a fact you're exaggerating and trying to pretend like you know your shit because I have never seen one study actually doing that.
>>
>>5960665
I've been called an intolerable cunt a countless amount of times so I know the criteria they have for using that insult and it's fucking amazingly ridiculous. They're defensive, deluded, and mentally crippled. It was really depressing the day I realized the majority of people are like this. Oh, and that was back when I was still making a HUGE effort to be perfectly nice to everyone. They had no reason. They're just fucking insane.

>>
>>5960640

Then that's cool

>>5960637

The thing is, ethical vegans don't just hurt themselves when they eat shitty diets, they also hurt their movement. How many people are really going to be convinced to go vegan if the average vegan looks like a cancer patient? You'd bring more people to your cause if you displayed better physical health, since a big deterrent for many people is "I know killing animals is wrong, but humans NEED to eat meat because we're omnivores." If you're unhealthy, you reinforce that point to them

Recently, Kaiser Permanente, the largest healthcare organization in the US, encouraged its physicians to recommend plant-based diets to all of their patients because they believe it offers the most potential for good health, and as a health care organization that saves them money. Although plant-based diets and vegan diets typically mean the same thing, they had to specify that a whole food, plant-based diet was a diet that not only excludes animal-derived foods, but that is built on whole grains, legumes, fruits, vegetables, and nuts. This is how you're going to get people to become vegan; when you teach them that it offers them the best chance at avoiding chronic illness. As plant-based diets are now quickly gaining leverage in the medical community, in my opinion, ethical vegans need to get their shit together and help to promote the other pillars of the philosophy, which are health and sustainability. Even if you don't care about them, the fact that other people do means that for you to meet your own goals, you need put effort in on those fronts as well

It started good but then you had to go all high and mighty

I feel like there are so many healthy looking vegans that if there are a few vegans who don't take care of their health it shouldn't be a big deal. And if people focus on their poor appearance and use it as an excuse not to go vegan, they weren't going to go vegan anyway. But I kind of agree. But I'm not going to try to shame a vegan because they eat too many cookies. And some vegans are cancer patients and that's why they became vegan so people who judge by a couple of sickly looking vegans are just morons.

Is the snark really necessary? I mean you're just inviting people to stir up shit.

1 cup pineapple, peeled & chopped into 1" pieces
4 cups water
1 tablespoon dried sage leaves
1 tablespoon salt (and extra for final seasoning)
1/2 tablespoon freshly ground black pepper (and extra for final seasoning)
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
2 tablespoons toasted coconut (optional)
2 tablespoons chopped cashews (optional)

>Saute the onion and garlic in the olive oil, in a heavy bottom pan over medium-high heat, until soft. Add sweet potato and pineapple, and saute for a few minutes. Add in water, sage, salt, pepper and nutmeg. Stir and bring to a boil. Then, lower heat and simmer for 30 minutes until potato is tender. Puree the mixture with a hand blender or in a stand-blender. Return the pureed soup to your pot and gently simmer, adding additional seasoning as needed. You'll definitely need to add a bit more salt and pepper. Serve the soup with either chopped toasted cashews or toasted coconut.

I think the one I tried had coconut milk in it too though

And there you go again
Are all vegans this passive-agressive and defensive
>>
>>5968099
No. Actually I think most of them are overly apologetic and way, way too nice. I consider myself to be way too nice as well but people will still call me a cunt when all I'm doing is being realistic. And it's not really passive.

I remember the last time I went an entire day on vegan food and I felt more hungry that day than days I haven't eaten at all
>>
This website has some pretty good recipes http://ohsheglows.com/

You don't have to be vegan to eat vegan food. A lot of that stuff is really creative and a breath of fresh air from eating beef or chicken every day. Most of it is really healthy too.

Can you explain that a bit? Are you trying to say there's no reason to be vegan if you're not doing it for personal health or are doing it on a budget? ??????

If so, you're retarded. But feel free to explain.

(The donuts are 99 cents btw. I feel like that's a good deal for them personally.)

>>5968611
Vegan food is often lower in calories. So you can eat more than you could in animal based food for the same amount of calories. Plus side is you often get more micronutrients. But then it depends on what you're eating on a vegan diet. There are a lot of filling vegan foods too. I think I might have experienced what you're talking about too though - after I eat a lot of vegetables something about it makes me crave more food. But since I usually eat mostly beans, nuts, and grains, (plenty of protein and fat) I don't have that craving. But yeah, a lot of variables to consider.

>>5968667
I will have fun browsing through this site.

To OP and the few free spirits in this thread, I'd like to thank you for coming here and sharing your thoughts, even though you know very well that you won't get out with any recipes. I may not personally agree with most of what you believe in, but I appreciate the effort.

No hun I am far from it. I grew up in the middle east and I have slit the throats of least 7 sheep and skinned about 2. I have also seen many many more being slaughtered during eid al-hajj. I can't remember the last day I haven't had any meat, let alone a meat product. I just appreciate a good discussion.

You must be poor and uneducated. People I know avoid meat in excess because (a) meat is boring, (b) factory farming is bad in literally every way, and (c) you are poor lol

That sub (and pretty much all of the biggish/circlejerky sub) are poisoned with the hive-mind voting system. Sure I am by no means vegan/vegetarian. Heck I might be on the opposite polar but I genuinely appreciate a discussion where no one prevails.
>>
Honest opinions only. Do you guys think carnists (or anyone for that matter) would be able to tell the difference in a blind, controlled test between meat, diary, eggs substitutes and the real deal?
>>
>>5972686
As a pescatarian that eats mostly vegan; yes. You're full of it if you think otherwise.
Most deliberately-vegan food, especially food that tries to mimic non-vegan food, is awful. Companies need to stop trying to make fake cheeses and shitty fake chicken-pieces and start focussing on making food that actually tastes good, made of good ingredients that happen to be vegan.

Source; the empty bowl of delicious pasta with vegan wholegrain-mustard and cayenne bechamel sitting next to me. Didn't taste like a cheese sauce, but pretty fucking tasty.
>>

I'm not vegan or anything but can anyone actually disprove this shit or should I start eating vegan?
>>
>>5973073
Maybe. You'll still be at higher risk of heart disease than you could be if you don't keep your omega fatty acids balanced, and the only way to do that as a vegan is on a high carb low fat diet.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFFWstlfDRk

This video is old. He now recommends having some algae oil too.
>>

And those carbs better be from whole foods, nerfherder, no processed white flour bullshit.

Lots of synthetic/nylon/plastic alternatives listed there. Doesn't sit well for your environmentalist brethren, since plastics are petroleum products...

Veganism is possible thanks to the world we live in today, brought to you by animal products. Goodbye.

Yeah I mean should I start eating the healthiest diet there is which seems to be vegan + some supplements?
The answer is presumably yes unless all the studies he cited are outright lies, which I don't think they are when I look at them.
>>
>>5972686

Are you insane? of course. You act like most people haven't tasted those things, anyway.
>>
>>5973976
>Are you insane?
I'm only wondering because I've stumbled upon many articles and threads where they go, Checkmate Meat-Lovers, this newly synthesized burger patty that bleeds is like the real deal. Or someone saying their tofu bbq has been known to confuse chicken eaters. I know what it taste like (tofu) and there's no way I can confuse it een in a blind taste,
>>5972950
and you are right in saying that there are some delicious vegan recipes. I have some accidental dishes of my own, where I made something and relized later that I didn't use any meat product at all. The few dishes that come to mind are stuffed grape leaves, mousakka, and apple crisps without the butter.
>>
>>5973961
Supplements can fix deficits, but not excesses. It must be a very specific vegan diet. Most vegans eat like shit.
