I made some udon the other day and tried to make the broth with the konbu kelp but it just tasted like very lightly flavored water. I even put bonito flakes in it. How do I make it taste like the restaurants?

Dashi:
4x6 inch piece of kombu
4 cups water
1/2 cup bonito flakes

Wipe kombu with wet towel/paper towel to remove any grit (but leave white powder, that's the good stuff.)

Soak kombu in water overnight at room temp

Discard kombu, bring water to boil

Remove from heat, add bonito flakes, wait until they sink to the bottom 15-20 min

Strain

How old are you? I have never encountered a Taiwanese person calling themselves Chinese and I have spent almost a year there in different regions. At least most young people hate that shit. I'm calling bullshit. On top of that, regular steaks are neither very popular nor good in Taiwan.

Hey guys, working on making a cake for a coworker's birthday tomorrow. He mentioned liking chocolate coffee cake, ganache, and pecans. I know I can probably pull something together but the catch is that he went to culinary school, is great in the kitchen, is my supervisor, and I'm intimidated by letting him eat my food.

I'm pretty shy about letting people eat things that I make in general. Self conscious. I mostly do it for fun and I'm a total novice. Do you think there are tips you guys might have or links you can share so that this comes out alright?

I'll probably try posting pics as I go along while I make a trial cake to take to d&d tonight. I can work out the kinks and stay up tonight making the final product. For now, I'll be checking out my cookbooks and recipes online to see what I'll need. Probably going with something like this

Hey guys, so I messed up and forgot to put my pork in the crock pot this morning so I just threw it in now, oh well, it'll still get done by tonight.

I used a Mccormick seasoning packet and the only things I did different were instead of plain water, I dissolved some chicken bouillon in the water, and I also threw a few dashes of Worcestershire sauce and liquid smoke in, along with some minced garlic and a sliced up onion.

Anyone have any other suggestions what to throw in? I've used the mccormick packet many times before and it always comes out tasty.

I prefer Little Caesar's. You can place an order and have it made fresh, or buy one of their hot 'n ready pizzas. They still have unbeatable prices after all these years, and the Detroit-style pan pizzas are even better than Domino's (which FWIW managed to turn that chain around).

How do you tell which types of alcohol you're supposed to drink straight and which to mix?

I recently tried vodka for the first time and it tastes like shit, yet for some reason people keep drinking it straight. Same goes for vodka. Meanwhile, rum and whiskey taste fine on their own, yet most people seem to only drink them in cocktails where you can't even taste the alcohol itself.

Am I missing something here or are my taste buds just defective?
