Hey everyone. Just recently turned 21 wondering what is a good place to start with liqueurs and alcohol in general. Picked up a bottle of whiskey and vodka but have no idea what good brands and what to make with them.

So far I've just tried orange juice and vodka. It's really the only thing I know about. Also someone told me tullamore dew was a good whiskey so that's what I got
>>
>21
For you Four Loco and Corona.

Just kidding, but anyway you're asking a crazy broad question, almost as silly as saying "I've just started eating food and I don't know what to make with them." Alcohol comes in so many categories and moods.

For Whiskey I'd say Whiskey Sour, if it's a good whiskey you might want to try and Old Fashioned but keep in mind that's an old man's drink and you probably won't like it until you're a full blown alcoholic. Don't drink Jack and Coke, that's a shitty drink and I think it's only popular because they're so popular and ubiquitous.

Vodka is vast so very vast. Bloody Mary's, White Russians, Moscow Mule, the whole Martini thing. Vodka can pretty much add to anything. My favorite is a Salty Dog.

For you I'd suggest trying a real Margarita. Cointreau, Gold Tequila, Fresh Lime Juice. Margarita's get a bad wrap because of the Americanized over sugared crap. A real Margarita tastes incredible and gets you buzzed nicely.

why do you care what other people do
>>
I've started cooking real food from base ingredients instead of just reheating crap, making pasta sauce, cooking steaks, that sort of thing. I usually take a photo if I'm particularly happy with how it turned out, so I can see my progression. I don't post them anywhere. I have no idea why people take photos in public of resteraunt meals.

Is this the new "my wifes son"?
>>

Heck yeah, OP. I made friends with this old Chinese lady who owns the local Azn market. She's been teaching me all kinds of cooking tips; inviting me into their restaurant kitchen to share food & teach, etc. It's awesome. I guess she's surprised to see a white boy buying chicken feet, pork blood, etc.

And don't limit yourself to Asian. There's plenty of other cultures who can teach you a lot of awesome cooking stuff.

where do you eat when Mcdonalds and Taco bell are no longer affordable? What are some delicious fastfood options for those of us who don't have the luxury of eating name-brands like McDonalds and Taco Bell?

hmmm you're going to have to buy the ingredients to make your own fast food. start with your local dollar store and buy beans, rice, and tortillas to make your own imitation taco bell burritos.

do you ever eat those sketchy looking gas station sandwiches that look like pic related? I only do it when I'm real desperate and just need something solid to fill the void temporarily. earlier I was out bird watching and forgot to eat lunch before I left and I started to feel like shit in the woods. I realized I was starving so I hauled ass to the nearest gas station and grabbed a sammie. I didn't even bother to look to see if it had a date on it or if it was growing mold and I don't even know what kind of meat it was I just inhaled it. About 3 hours later I'm at home having projectile vomit in the back yard, not sure if it was sandwich related. It wasn't Deli Express, I somewhat trust them as I've spoken to the guys that deliver them a few times, they regularly come in to replenish, rotate, and throw away bad stock. This was something I'd never seen before, it looked like some regional shit. The package was very simple and similar to pic related but it just said "Moms" on it. I barely looked at it, it's still in my car and later I'm going to get it and investigate.

Anyway, thoughts on premade gas station fare.

I worked at a gas station about a year ago. We had Deli Express and a couple of other brands of those sandwiches. Just make sure you check the hand written dates on them before you buy. We would receive the sandwiches frozen in a crate, thaw them in the back coolers, and then write the date 28 days out from when we put them on the shelf. Most of my co-workers would forget to write the dates on them and pull the old ones, which led me to check each sandwich I sold so the person wouldn't get sick or pissed off.

They all taste like cold plastic anyway.
>>
>>7613460
I often eat them. Sometimes I make it a meal by adding a can of soda and a bag of chips.
>>
>>7613624
I do that too! I'm definitely not some pretentious douchebag who scoffs at anyone who decides to eat those things for lunch.

Are you drinking your water, /ck/? Be honest.

How much water do you have a day? What source does it come from? Faucet? Bottles? Gallon jugs? Filtered? Garden hose?

How do you like it? Over ice? Room temp? Garden hose temp? With lemon? Also curious for you filter fags/spring water fags, do you not use faucet water when you cook or make drinks like coffee and tea?

Spring water: the patricians choice, or meme of the century? Distilled water: the literally who, or the dark horse contender for best H2O?

>>
I drink roughly 2-3 liters per day.
Source: my faucet, which has a filter on it.

>>faucet water when you cook
Using filtered water makes a difference for some things (drinks, stocks/broths) but I didn't notice any difference when, say, boiling veggies.

>spring
some of it tastes good, but I don't find it worth the price.

>distilled
contains no minerals so it doesn't taste of anything.
>>
>>7611699
At least a gallon a day
Iced
Filtered from fridge at home or machine at work
Filtered for coffee, tea, and cooking
Cup at home, tumbler with straw at work, 1L Nalgene when out

Often times you just choose the meat (or vegetable) and get a full platter like in your OP pic.

most ethiopian places have some kind of combo plate on the menu so just order that to hit all the bases and save money

Thanks anons! Any authentic food/meat that you are recommending? I don't want to just eat chicken with a salad as I can get that at even fast food restaurants. I want to try something authentic yet universally considered good tasting.

It obviously is going to depend on the situation.

Last time I was in that situation (in a place where it wasn't appropriate) I asked to have the food boxed up, tipped the served, and explained why we were leaving.

I'm honestly too old to put up with that kind of shit.

Mostly because japanese cuisine uses less exotic and "weird" ingredients than chinese or thai, so it's easier to find and cheaper; unless you live in a city with a big asian community.

VOTING GUIDELINES

Voting follows an 'Iron Chef' style scoring system. This means you, the people of /ck/, will judge each entry individually instead of deciding on what you feel is the "best" dish.

Dishes are scored out of a total 20 points, based on 4 categories (worth a maximum of 5 points each); Presentation, Originality, Appeal and Challenge Goals. You may award 0's if you feel the contestant did not meet your expectations for a category.

-Presentation: The appearance of items on the plate; plating skills
-Originality: Creativity in composing the dish
-Appeal: How appetizing the food looks/whether or not the dish appeals to your personal taste as a voter
-Challenge Goals: How closely the entry followed the challenge goal(s)

The distinction between Presentation and Appeal: If someone submits an artfully arranged but burnt steak as an entry, it may score high in Presentation but low in Appeal.

For additional info and to see submissions from Previous years, check out the Challenge blog. (http://ckchallenge.blogspot.ca/)

The theme of Round Seven is...

No heat allowed!

Raw, frozen, fermented, cold smoked, cooked in acid... I don't care, but no no heat source allowed this round! Good luck!. While you're perfectly welcome to make a large spread of food, please make sure there is clearly a "main dish" because that is what people will be voting on.

Two contestants will not be moving on to the next round. This is also a prize round! Winner gets a surprise!
