There are several. They're ok, at least the ones I've had.

last time i had pizza with jalapenos i was blackout drunk and we ordered a pizza i dont remember exactly who was ordering but i thought wed agreed on plain pepperoni pizza and an abomination with pepperoni and jalapenos came instead - i ate too much and vomited and it fucking burned on the way back up so much the next morning and tasted solely of pepperoni grease

This is probably why a lot of cultures include holidays where you fast. If you don't ever know what being hungry actually feels like, you probably start eating more when you're bored, unhappy, etc.

The particular Unitarian-Universalist church I do stuff with occasionally (I'm not UU, though) does Thanksgiving work feeding the poor and homeless out of their kitchen.
A few of the UUs at that congregation have decided to do a two-day fast, consuming only water (and I assume cigarettes for those of them who smoke) on Thanksgiving and Black Friday to remind themselves to be thankful for the food they have the rest of the year.
I thought it a useless idea at first until I learned that the families who participate in the fast are the ones providing the food they hand out. They're literally sacrificing their own TG so others can have theirs. That's a nice thought.

As for other cultures and their fasting, I don't think it helps them at all. Have you seen how they break their fast? Huge HUGE fucking banquets, more than I think they'd have consumed if they just ate like normal people do. At least this is the case with the Muzzies (during Ramadan) and the Mormons (on the first Sunday of every month) I know who do their fasting.
