Thrift/oppe/second hand book stores often have cocktail books lying around for like 2 bucks. Thats where i started.
Also know your vermouths. Martini rosso is shit in everything but negronis. Rosso antico is good for everything but campari based drinks.
Actually just know your booze.
Tanqueray sucks in tom collins but is good for everything else. Gordons is good for collins because of the citrus taste. Dont underestimate jack daniels as a Bourbon its fantastic in loads of shit. El Dorado is the best tequila cocktail.
Just drink a shitload of cocktails with loads of different ingredients.
