Anyone here going to Akaicon next weekend?
Nah. It's going to be shit this year. I wouldn't even be surprised if they called it quits afterwards.
I'm going.
Kinda iffy on the new venue. And the guest list is kinda shit this year. It may be circling the drain. I liked it the last few years because it was very laid back vs MTAC and I didn't feel like a sardine.
GMX was called off this year and if MTAC still doesn't find a better venue next year I'm gonna have to find a new con to go to.
Anybody go to Hypericon? The Luau and other events sound fun but I don't know if it would be worth it.
I can't stand how anal they're acting about everything this year. I'm guessing the hotel cost more than they can afford or something because they're going so hard against ghosting
I'm going. I'm not sure what's with all the negativity outside of general /cgl/ salt. I've always had a lot of fun at this con and I massively prefer it to MTAC.

Don't get me wrong I love akaicon. But the guest list this year seems lackluster compared to last year and the new venue seems to be some old run down POS hotel verses the last couple of years.
I just worried its a sign of things to come. I've always had fun at akaicon and agree about mtac. Just worried about the seeming downgrades this year. I hope I'm wrong.
Why do Tennessee cons have such a hard time? Is there just not enough interest? Are all Tennesseeans just cringey as fuck when it comes to anime?
I miss pre-2014 MTAC. Seriously great con.
>>9578681
TFW 2013 was my first years at MTAC.
I miss that big ass convention center
>>9578914
I drive by it every damn day, and I swear I cry a little.
>>9578423
Oversaturation.
There's MTAC, GMX, Akaicon, Anime Blues Con, Memphis Comic and Fantasy Con, Hypericon, Yama-con, Anime Blast Chattanooga, ETSU-con, Wizard World (I guess), uhhh I feel like I'm forgetting some, but TN has a lot of fucking conventions.
>>9580732
Has anybody been to Hypericon? Experiences?
Thinking about checking it out next year but not sure if it's worth skipping the other con around the same time I was planning on.
>>9580732
Are there not just as many cons in other states? I always thought that TN was lacking in the amount of cons it actually had compared to other states.
Can they actually kick us out if we're just in the lobby or visiting the starbucks? Like I can only go for 3 hours and wanted to say hi to some friends but they're being real assholes about this
>>9581735
I've never been to the new venue so I don't know about the starbucks or layout. But I would say you could just use the excuse that you're staying in the hotel and wanted to see what was happening and just hang out in the lobby and starbucks. Badges only really matter (generally) for getting into the panels/dealer room. There isn't much they can do about the common areas of a hotel. They can't piss off the venue by harassing the other guests. Of course, they are going to say you absolutely have to have a badge because that is how they make money but chances are they won't even notice you for only 3 hours especially if you aren't in costume.
Last akaicon (or maybe GMX) there were tons of normies who were on vacation roaming the halls and taking pictures with everybody. I took pictures with a nice Mexican family and an older lady who said her grandson would love our costumes. I'm sure they didn't get booted.
I've also walked around for like half a day without my badge and didn't have problems until trying to get into either the dealer room or one of the late night panels I can't remember.
>>9581933
Oh ok that's good to hear thanks Anon.
They've just been posting all the time how they're going to like police the lobbies and escort people without badges out so I was getting really antsy.
Hopefully I won't have any trouble
>>9582083
I haven't seen any of that and they may have changed their policies. But I don't really see them having the authority to tell people they can't be in the lobby unless it's specifically part of the convention area and not the main lobby of the hotel (although it looks like they may be using the lobby as the analog gaming room which could be a clusterfuck for the cards against humanity tournament) and definitely not the Starbucks. If they see you without a badge talking to your friends I would say I just met some cool people while getting coffee and wanted to talk to them. Unless they are just dicks they will probably leave you alone. The worst they can do is ask you to leave the convention area. The hotel is open to the public and they have restaurants for public use so it's not out of the question people would walk in. If they rented out a convention center they could have more control over people entering but not a hotel.
Also, I just realized they are going to have the main events room on the 10th floor of the hotel. Hope nobody wants to use the elevators for an hour before and after the Burlesque show and rave start and end.
It's the first day. Who's gonna bet the elevators stop working before the end of the day?
Hope you faggots are ready.
Morning bump, today's the day.
>Look at panel lineup
>literally nothing but overwatch and leftist bullshit
Oh boy how fun
Between the shitty guest list and this shit parking situation I'm already done. They're also moving rooms around. Did they not plan ahead?
>>9586710
no no they didn't
moving the games around just proves it. If it's not a better location next year I'm out.
>>9586862
Also my toilet is broken so I'm stuck waiting for the repair guy. I had to wait for the elevator because the phone in my room doesn't work but I wasn't going to bother them with that as well.
>>9586906
Also fuck the elevator situation. I don't care about Risque I just want to get to my room!!!
I'm not coming back to the Millennium hotel again!
This hotel is busted af for what they charge. Glad I parked on their grass.
They said we can park on Athens Way tomorrow. Just... the street itself.
Parking was so impossible we gave up and left.
Yea fuck this hotel.
Is akai is here next year I won't be coming back.
Anyone at least having fun?
They are towing cars from the parking lot that are blocking traffic/fire lanes
Who's ready for Pokechurch??
Hotel was absolutely the worst, the room was dirty along with the sheets, toilet didn't fully work unless flushed 3 times, shower drain was clogged, panels were really bad and lacking, last year there was nice places to get my photo taken, hotel staff was rude, the Akai staff at lease seemed like they were trying to handle the break down , some girl ran into a sexual predator and had a panic attack in front of her room, the guest us repeated party trash with no content, dealers was small but had some selection, artists look like they got fucked over this year, and most of this can be resolved by not coming back here.
Honestly worst con experience ever. There wasn't a single event worth going to and the rave ended 2 hours early. Plus if you wanted to go to anything good luck because everything kept getting moved. I give it another year before this con dies.
>>9588369
Fuck you Robin, you are annoying and not funny anymore.
Not really sure where else they'll go. I heard they pissed off the Sheraton and that's why they went to Maxwell House, and I doubt Maxwell House will let them back and nobody wants to go back. Not exactly sure where they'll go.
Am I the only one who noticed the con director has teeth that were aligned by Michael J Fox and brown as a dirty furry diaper? Lol
>>9588704
What are your favorite panels anon? Just out of curiosity. Robins were some of my favorite, but if you thing there are better ones out there I'd like to check them out.
Did anyone else notice they cut everything in main room short? What was up with that?
>>9589415
Let's get more current panels!
How to do let's plays, streaming, prop building from beginner to advanced, know your rights (panel on parody works and copyrights), something more interactive and up to date and not mush together of here is what I think and only way to do it. For a multi fandom con it was lacking.
>>9590196
Most likely the hotels doing. I know they triple booked so maybe could be in part to that, or just general noise issues
Weird, everyone on my fb feed just keeps talking about how great Akai was.
>>9590444
It was fun for me, despite how much the con itself crapped the bed.
I had fun despite the hiccups. I don't feel like it was very well run, which isn't a surprise when all their directors are too busy cosplaying and showboating. But hey, I did have a good time.
Honestly I was ready to leave friday night and nothing would have really been lost if I had.
Unless there is a complete overhaul next year I won't be back. And I'm never going to that hotel for any reason again.
>>9590605
I went year 3 and everytime I saw the conchair he had a glass of wine in his hand and a girl on each arm....while that was a huge line 5 feet away from him bc everything in his con was running late and not anywhere near starting on time.
then he got up and I guess was stalling for time for the cosplay contest, that was already running an hour late, and he just talked about how great he was and how great it was that he made this con for us to enjoy.
and later I saw him talking to a girl and then the girl started crying and ran off.
...not really a fan of the fact that the conchair seems to care more about being a big deal then making sure his con actually runs well.
I also asked if there was a booklet bc I wanted to read about the panels and was told to download the app.
there was no app. There was a online post on their fb page that sent me to a part of their website that basically said nothing more about their panels than the schedule did.
that was also the year they had Night Sabers play and so I judge this con as bad.
How was the rave? I heard the 2 guys from the gay club took it over so I wonder how much people liked listening to shitty club music for 2 hours straight.
I think it's pretty shitty they're all over social media playing victim for how awful the Maxwell House was to them when I have a friend who works for the city's visitor services and was told by hotel staff they didn't read their own contract.
Because they didn't read the contract they thought they had the tenth floor room all night but didn't. They then cut everything short, blamed the hotel and now is trying to get everyone to feel sorry for them when it's their fault.
>>9592630
Who? Staffers?
Yeah. Apparently their con chair even made a post about how they wouldn't be going back and shit talked.
That jackass who got onstage, said bad words in a G rated panel. There were damn 5 year olds there.
Any good panels?
>>9593361
Some autist just don't understand that. At GMX last year in the Steven universe panel there were several kids and some 20 something fatass yelled out something about penis. I can't remember the context. But he could clearly see the kids from where he was sitting
