je suis un ananas
From the activity in this thread and in the Canada one, it feels like no one is going to Otakuthon, despite being talked about so much. How many are going and is there a meetup or anything?
Literally driving in from Fredericton on Friday morning.

2/3 cosplays done but I'm scared for my last one. Extra sad because I'll have no props either and be basic af. I'm happy though because my boyfriend doesn't have to be bored and he can just chill in the gaming room.
Let us know if there's a meet up
It's cool to see Otakuthon's development since I first went in 2010. Can usually see the growth every year.
Also, maybe I'm just not into the crowd they're aiming at but the guests this year don't feel as strong as usual. Probably just ignorance on my part though.
I've came the last three years but I'm always nervous to come meet you guys. 3/3 cosplays done, moved out of Canada but I'm coming up this year from PA.
tfw dont need to buy a ticket since I live very close to the con
>>9576100
Maybe they meant a train or plane ticket?
>>9576100
I only care about Ayako Kawasumi for the Ushiromiya Lion. Otherwise it's nothing on my part. Never heard Man With A Mission, though. I may listen to stuff within the week and maybe I'll have the fortune of ending up a fan.
I'm just updating a cos from a couple of years ago... I should really start on that... Any idea when to hold a meetup? Should probably wait for the schedule to come out.
>>9576187
have fun guys, otakuthon is too rich for my blood this year. that 289$/night hotel price before tax per night... oochie mama.
>>9576200
>hotel
University housing is where it's at this year.
>>9576100
i meant I won't have to buy an admission ticket since I can just walk across the street for a few minutes and see the main lobby. not much ever happens above
>>9576200
this is why I'm so happy to have family in Quebec. Sure it's a 30 minute subway ride but to me it's so worth saving 400+ $
>>9576200
I'm staying with a friend of mine, saves a lot of cash if you've got French friends.
I know nothing about the con other than the fact that man with a mission is coming, hopefully the schedule is nice
I feel sorry for you guys. Im paying $350~ for 2 nights at the Holiday Inn with parking. Where are you guys getting all these high numbers from?
est-ce qu'il y a quelques locaux ici ou juste des touristes?
>>9577661
>Local but my French is shite lmao
>>9577661

Til this day, they still haven't fucking shipped the shit out, so I'm vexed as balls. I had buy it in town for more than triple the price. It's okay though, thanks anyway.
made a lazy template if anyone wants to share their plans
>>9576255
>University housing is where it's at this year.
this anon is right, this is the best thing to do when it comes to Montreal. I got myself a place just ten minutes from the convention
http://www.otakuthon.com/2017res/pdf/2017-PrelimSchedule.pdf
Schedule is out! Made a poll for meetup times. Personally leaning toward's 8pm Friday and/or Saturday at 10pm. Not sure if we have enough interest for 2 meetups though.
http://www.strawpoll.me/13580972
>>9580656
I'm looking around quick but if anyone finds Ayako Kawasumi time here please share. Thank you. Will mention if I find it.
Okay I found it. 11:30 AM to 12:45 PM on Sunday.
>>9581010
It's like renting an airbnb relax dude.
Is it odd that my biggest hype is the possible meetups and the fact that I'll be able to eat some decent asian meals? Since New Brunswick has none.
/k/rossposter here
Are there any particular activities you'd strongly recommend? I might be with a friend or two but it's more likely that I'd go on my own.
I paid for the weekend pass and I live pretty close so I can make multiple trips no problem.
HALL VIGER IS CLOSED BOIS. PULLIN A MCC. Pink trees apparently blocked off too
On one hand I'm happy its filtering out the creeps and normies
On the other. Rip. So many people i know ghost it
>>9581303
we could just meet where the sofas before the entrance is, or possibly at the tims. Unsure.

eh no montreal has a tiny chinese population compared to vans/tdot like its pretty much impossible to get something as simple as a real dim sum restaurant china town has become dilapidated since over a decade ago
>>9581915
Chinese no but Vietnamese yes.
Also Chinese pop. Is pretty large in MTL, just not as large as Toronto
>>9581987
I think its around 50k which is tiny for a city of 4m also most of them live in the south shore now
>>9581987
>Vietnamese yes
There aren't any really good Vietnamese restaurant in Chinatown though so I doubt anon will be able to eat it at the meetup.
>>9574956
10pm on Saturday sounds pretty good. Don't think anything is really happening at that time
Which events do you look forward to this year?
>>9582470
10pm sounds fine but a bit late. Could we do 9?
What about Friday?
on saturday at 22h local time, la ronde got their last final firework show for the summer so if you're a fan of firework and there's nothing good going on for you at the convention around that time, you'll have a nice time watching that. Me and my buddies are planning to see it on the jacque cartier bridge and then hit up the convention again or get some sleep
>>9582657
Yo that's a great idea

>>9583099
Are there any ones that are particularly better than the others usually?
My first time was last year but I only went to buy merch and look at the cosplay a bit.
>>9583107
Can't really say since it's gonna be my first time to this con so your best bet is to get a pamphlet and check what you want to do at x hour, anon
You can pretty much go into any panels and fuck off to another one if it shit, or go from places to places to see how things go, I'm sure there's gonna be shit you'll like, but you'll be the only judge of your tastes man. At best you can always go and enjoy the cringe at some panels for greentext
So, any event recommendations from people who've actually been there before?
>>9583292
The concerts are nice if you don't mind paying extra for the ticket. Masq always has pretty impressive costumes if that's your thing but make sure you line up or you most likely won't get in. Cosplay cafe up on the top floor is worth a visit if you're in cosplay for the cute terrace photos, food there is passable but overpriced and you're better off going to Chinatown for buns. Dealers and AA are decently stocked but it's the same shit you see every other con. As for panels, never really been my thing but if the name sounds vaguely interesting you lose literally nothing by going. Bad fanfiction is usually pretty solid. If you want to cringe out of your skin the 16+ impossible positions contest and fanservice contest was mentally scarring. I'm going to check out the gachimuchi panel to support a fellow seagull.
Most of the time though I just like to chill on the con floor and look at all the pretty cosplay. Paying 300$ to hang out with friends ayy
where are some great restaurants to hit up in montreal while i'm there? last year I went to sumo ramen and little sheep hot pot in chinatown, those were both great, and i also got some fucking bomb ass breakfast at a place called universel uptown
What was your favorite year for otakuthon?
>>9584064
I've been going since 2014 and I think I'd say my favorite year was 2015.
>>9583347
Au Pied du Cochon for super rich and delicious French food, featuring mostly duck, foie gras and maple syrup.
http://aupieddecochon.ca/?lang=en
Schwartz's Deli for Montreal Smoked Meat sandwiches
https://schwartzsdeli.com/ca/en/
St. Viateur Bagels for the most exquisite bagels. Honestly, they were so delicious I bought 4 dozen to take home.
http://www.stviateurbagel.com/
Au Kouign-Amann quaint little bakery featuring baked goods based on their namesake. They also have awesome croissants
https://www.fb.com/Au-Kouign-Amann-130216647050155/
La Banquise for poutine.
http://labanquise.com/
Not a particularly glamorous restaurant, though I think worthwhile to mention due to it's proximity to the con is Maison du Magret. It's a good solid French bistro featuring almost entirely duck for their menu. Their foie gras sauce is TO DIE FOR!?

>>9584245

dem be fight'in words
so the best bang of your buck meal wise is romados personal I find the chicken to be shit ever since they stopped using a flat grill/stopped offering a lot stuff also RIP 50c day old bread
but getting a half chicken passion fruit soda and a threeandahlf plus a 40oz of blue 10.1 and going to tamtam is something everyone should do if you'd like to make the night last longer add in 1-2g of mushrooms per person and go walk on the mountain at night without a flashlight/hop the fence to the swimming pool and go skinny dipping
I regretted not buying a Final Fantasy ticket when purchasing my weekend pass. I was wondering if any anons here would want to sell me one?
>>9584806
Can't you just buy a ticket at registration?
Should I bother with screenings?
I can't help but guessing it would be either super fun or fucking obnoxious.
>>9585031
Concert tickets are only online and preorder iirc.
>>9585107
>This year Otakuthon is bringing you three exiting concerts; one on each day of the event.
>A limited number of tickets will be available for purchase 3 hours before the show at registration. A valid registration is required.

>>9585305
I just came back from the convention for the tickets, not too bad. I only had to wait around 30 minutes

>meeting
>friends

>>9586989
Where are the good 2B's? It's another basic butch flavour of the month cosplay but I guess wearing tank tops and shorts with a shitty highlighter wig is easier.
Anyways, is it just me or was today not crowded at all? The line felt longish but the Friday of last year was sooo much more crowded.
>>9586562
I've been through artists' alley twice and haven't seen any Friends either. Dissapointing
>>9587016
yup
>>9587017
come to meet ups, talk with others in line
If anyone wants to try for meetup round 2, 10pm tonight at the pink trees? Right at the end, the big wall between the end of the trees and the door. It's usually empty as fuck there tho I don't know if more than like 5 people are interested
>>9586819
I saw vickybunnyangel as 2b yesterday was bretty gud
>>9587054
Probably bc all the normies were filtered out of hall viger. Shows how many ghosters were there lol

10pm is right when the rave and Otakurock starts. 8 or 9pm is probably a better time for some people.
Morning guys, any Kancolle photoshoots today? I brought my KC Lawson nobori banner with me. But if there is no KC photoshoot I won't bring it out due to how big and bulky it is.

Hey, we're at gachimuchi front row middle isle. Come join the fun.
This panel is garbage.
Don't be mean they're trying their best
Shit, I don't think I can make this one, with a normish friend.
Post pic of meetup. I dont want to approach normies thinking its 4chan people.
At trees, looking around
Picture of where to go please
>>9587902
We are at the trees
im at pink trees where u guys at. I carry a large kancolle banner with me.
Is the meetup with the weeaboos or moonman and the slavs?
>>9587916
The slavs
>>9587916
weaboos with kancolle banner, not moonman/slavs
You think there would be overlap between the two groups, but apparently not?
I creeped for a bit but ultimately Slav vs Boat scared me off
Maybe if you don't wander too far from the convention centre I can grab a discord link or something
I went to the Otakuthon meet up not last year, but the year before. That meet up was a mix of cosplayers and shitposters this year was mostly shitposters. But they were all good dudes, chill group. Had a good time.
>>9587845

>>9587492

>>9588014
In our defense it was our first panel ever. We didnt know what really to do so we just played some videos. Sorry man, we were thinkin about putting on Playing With Fire but figured some people may not like the source material
/shrug
Anyone got rikka from chuunibyou? Only saw her once and then got away before I could ask for a picture.

On an unrelated note, this is the first year where I actually attend events so I don't know the details.
Do you have to pre-register to attend WCS tomorrow? I kinda wanna go.
>>9588064
I fucking loved and I mean LOVED that panel. It had a really fun feel at the very end, almost magical to be surrounded by crazy weebs defending their waifus.
Guzma was so adorable, I wish he loved me that much.
Is there a memebook page or something where they post pics of this year's best cosplays or do I have to go watch the summit?
If you didn't come to the shiny gates, you missed out.
>>9588135
usually people post their pics here
Has anyone here ever bought a "loot box" with hidden content? I can't imagine they're not disappointing.
>>9588281
One of my friends got one and it was filled with bootleg and league of shitter garbage. So not worth it.
>>9588281
Someone showed me what they got for that bag for 35 dollars and you get like a few more items. Big hatsune miku bag and he only got a small print, pposter and a button and something else I couldn't see he was pissed
I came to see the cringe last day at the turnabout but they actually did a good show, the guy who played jame nailed the voice and character
My side fucking split in two when someone from the public told franziska to shut up and she faced him with her whip, couldn't catch her on camera but christ that was hilarious
Gonna watch the second show with link, shit's going to be good
>>9588135
Normiebook or any site will do
>>9588340
Where on normiebook exactly? otakuthon page doesn't post shit
>>9588706

please post your pics

Now that otakuthon has come and go, what where some of your favorite things from it?
I definitely had more fun there than anime north
>>9589127
waifu wars was the tits
I hope there's gonna be one next year, if so I might participate
I liked the Initial D screening too, I couldn't see the subtitles at all but it made me realize how much better my wapanese has gotten so that's nice
Anyone happen to have taken a picture of me? I was a female skull grunt with a team skull Pikachu on my hip. Had a bunch of pics taken but didn't think to ask for a copy like the noob I am.
>>9588020
I liked it, there was some folks in there that never watched those before and everyone had a good laugh in the end
I came in expecting some information about the cast, discussion about the videos, seeing some of the original lewd shit and overall a room filled with fujoshi, but I'm a faggot who enjoy watching these videos again and again
You guys said you couldn't make it to Anime North, which is surprising considering they had a whole hotel for this kind of shit
>>9589169
Unfortunately I was not.
>>9589161
We saw you, my friend did, quality seems off though
>>9589165
Its because their organization is absolute garbage.
Fingers (one of the head panel guys) told us we got the panel about a week before AN and a day before the schedule came out. Needless to say there was miscommunication and the panel wasnt there.
Maybe next year for AN. and we'll have a much better panel for sure, comin more prepared.
>it's the yearly post-otakuthon depression episode
>>9589200
This year had an especially nice atmosphere, too. I'm already going super sad right now.
>>9589185
Can confirm, having to deal with Peter, who happens to be the logistics director, is a fucking nightmare.
You have to send a dozen emails to a dozen different directors to get anything fucking done and it's going to be late no matter what, no matter who you're trying to deal with. It somehow always ends up going on smooth but fucks sakes setup and teardown is a nightmare every year.
>>9589173
Good enough for me, thanks so much!!
>>9589185
good luck with that, they already fucked up with the hotels
At least Otakuthon is handling itself well, I've had a lot of fun this year
>>9589127
HAHAHAHA no fucking way I wonder how many people understood wtf this was
Can you guess the panel?
anyone else did the visual novel panels? were they fun this year?
>>9589364
But would you press the button
>>9589390
anyone who presses this button probably goes to jail
I didn't get to take a picture of the Jeanne d'Arc.
>>9589200
Only two I had from my phone still driving home
>>9589200
Mfw feels like I wasted the con. Every day was scramble to get ready on time, end up late anyways, just shooting all day then waddling back to my hotel room to die. I definitely still had fun but with so many shoots piling up I ended up missing almost every panel I wanted to go to, the meetups, all the good cosplay on Saturday and was too exhausted to party hard :^( Mwam was lit at least. Blog post over, see you next year guys!
>>9589464

Everything else was overpriced as fuck, and I don't feel bad for people who buy a figure for ~3x the original price, even 1000yen figs for $60+
>>9589968
Navito booth actually had a few new releases at MFC listed prices
Specifically the Ima=Real statues that me and another guy bought simultaneously, but I only found it because i was looking in vain for super rare prize figures
>>9588020
i for one absolutely loved it, i learned new stuff, saw new gachimuchi content, and only went into it expecting what they do for the anime showings but with gachimuchi videos.
>>9590137
you could have done the same thing at home on youtube
waste of time
>>9589893
I like to browse the drawings/posters in the shops. everything else you can easily find online and usually cheaper
anyone got a better picture of this guy?
>>9590141
i expected only videos going into it. and the absurdity of watching gachimuchi with a room full of people is not lost on me.
>>9590146
nope
>>9590141
Why are you so butthurt about this panel anon?
>You could have done the same thing at home on YouTube
Could be said about 95% of the panels there.
Sorry to have wasted your time
>>9590334
wrong, relying on videos is a waste of time and that """panel""" was the one that did it the most by far
>>9590338
you ever notice that quarter of the convention hall that is entirely just anime episodes being played all day. doesnt that make you angry? all that wasted time.
>tfw no higurashi cosplay
>>9589792
Nothing?
>>9590349
and I don't waste time watching anime at a convention either
you've made a shit panel, get over it
>>9590356
Yeah I was Yasu above but everyone was calling me Beatrice (it's my first cosplay). I'm surprised there was more Umineko than Higurashi but that trend'll probably continue since I'm going as Erika next year and already have someone preparing to cosplay Will with me.
>>9590356
nah seen a Shion
>>9590349
Ever been to a late night screening? Watching porn and laughing at it with a group of people is fun. Not like there's much else to do after midnight at anime cons.
>>9589893
Let me guess... the anime in Hollywood panel was a bunch of people whining about GitS and Death Note and evolved into a bunch of white nerds whining about whitewashing?
Despite Persona 5 being extremely popular, I haven't seen a single Kawakami cosplayer. REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Some artists from artist alley remembered me from AN and gave me some merch from their table. Feels fucking good
>>9589599
tfw someone posts a picture of your cosplay
wow this is kinda sad normally otakuthon gets 500-750 post that isn't all photo dumps
>>9590426
I didn't like it because they didn't whine about GitS enough
>>9590587
I've been posting litarally 80% of the pictures, do your part
my fav picture
>>9590591
It wasn't very good, and Hollywood adaptations of anime have all been mediocre or shitty so far. What else is there to say?
>>9590423
>mfw they played we are number one except with hentai parts before bible black in the alternative hentai video room
i swear to god i was this guy in the same cosplay on the internet way before. didn't know he was at otak too
What's going on here? Bust cam or lack of storage?
3>4>2>1
anyone know what this one's from?
>>9590618
Did I put my schoolbag away for this one or did I just stand there and have it taken?
If yes, then lack of storage, if no, I probably forgot. I didn't usually let that show.
>>9590632
I don't remember.
would you?
>>9590645
>2 sets of lungs
does it have 2 vaginas as well?
>>9590655
>>9590608

i kid, last one for real just because i want to know what the fuck this is from
>>9590675

>>9590670
>ys cosplay
Yo nice
>bump limit
>>9590678
I don't know my touhou
>bump limit
see yall next year
hopefully I can 1cc SA by then
Before this thread dies down for good : see you guys next year ;_;
Went here with my friend this year, pretty much only for IA.
First time in Montreal, or outside of ON in canada, so it was a really nice experience. I enjoyed the city itself way more than the con.
If any of you live there, you all live in a really nice city. The rain sucked though, but the poutine more than made up for it.
>>9590692
What do you like about it? Living there; for me it's ordinary.
>>9590695
Go travel, we live in one hell of a place.
>>9590695
Its so much cleaner and brighter than TO for starters. Nighttime in the downtown for montreal was way more happening than Toronto, so much shit going on at once it was insane. So much old buildings and the big park with the gardens was really nice. I mean sure you guys also have a bit of trashy areas but its a lot more manageable than TO's, which is sketchy almost everywhere you go.
>>9590692
>>9590697
Yeah, Montreal in general is pretty nice. They have a shit ton of events as long as you bother to check what is happening around the city. Hell, they even have a whole underground city to see
There's a lot of fun shit to do, and they even have some places that are completely free to visit
>>9590711
>underground city
It's just a shitty mall filled with hobos that goes from metro station to metro station
>>9590716
dude its an architectural wonder
>>9590356
I saw a rena.
>>9588020
Sorry abt me and my friends who came in drunk with literal bottled four lokos it was good for us though we were laughing pretty hard
>>9588020
I want to join you guys for AN next year. Panel or even if we get a screening room to show of a whole bunch of them.
>tfw still trying to understand why people call otakuthon 'the best canadian con' when it's literally a fucking con in a mall surrounded by hobos and shit food.
>>9590676
This one is Trinity blood
>>9591113
I never gave a shit about conventions until this year, so i only went to Anime north and this one
AN was pretty shit when it came to panels, but this one had some pretty good stuff going on. Even the vidya tournaments had prizes compared to AN
As for the food, there were some pretty good restaurants nearby if you bothered to check >google
>>9591115
I fucking love you man, ive been tryign to figure out what it was for way too long
>>9589464
>>9590357
Not my photo but someone posted this one to discord
>>9591113
AN
>super shit panels littered with political garbage
>no good musical guests that are actually anime related
>shitty guests in general
>staff who are mostly in their 40s-50s and act like 10 year olds
>several buildings a fair distance from each other, unreliable shuttle
>most people don't watch anime
>only a few nearby restaurants that are always crowded and have waiting lists
>not in the center of the city
Otakuthon
>decent panels, worthless SJW garbage is at a minimum
>musical guests like IA and Man with a Mission
>decent guests who are recognizable to anime fans
>staff are mostly really chill bros
>one building
>most people watch at least some anime
>tons of restaurants all over the place. If some are overcrowded, just walk a little further and you'll find more.
>in the center of the city
>Canadian representative for World Cosplay Summit is chosen here, not at AN
>international level Gunpla competition
>video game competitions actually have prizes
It's, like, so hard to choose, man. The only thing you can really argue is that AN has more/better cosplay and more/better room parties.
>>9591680
Otakuthon definitely is better, it is also worth staying an extra day just to visit montreal since there's a shit ton of things to do and see
>>9590362
im not the guy who ran it, just a guy who went to it
>>9591624
Hell yeah thank you
>>9591680
>people in Toronto is all on that diversity bullshit
>people in Montreal doesn't give a shit and just want to have some good'ol fun
seems around right
>>9591680
I would argue Otakuthon has the better cosplay scene, just because there are a tons more and better photoshoot locations than AN's "parking lots for ages". Not going to wear my nicest cosplay only to end up with no pretty photos and prey to the weather.
>>9592218
>university hot-spot has no SJWs
a BLM protest erupted during the jazz festival literally a few weeks ago
>>9592291
>>9592291
Oh yeah, i completely forgot the english side for university and school were shock full of sjws. A friend of mine shown me around them and there's was a shit ton of "Stop islamophobia" and other shit
On the frenchie side, nobody really gives a shit about the racial and we deal instead with the person. People aren't that retarded in French
You never stepped into Uqam or concordia. Both these universities are notorious for being sjw-friendly
>>9594100
>what is UQÀM and cégep du vieux montréal
>>9594318
a high school for the mental retarded and a daycare for the retarded
>>9594367
you missed the point
>>9589209
I gave a hand for set up and teardown this year. You know, set up and teardown would be much easier if more people gave a hand.
Also i barely interacted with this Peter, how is he?
>>9591113
in a mall are you high
it's common for congress centres to have small stores often in bottom floor, atleast I know for quebec...? Also fucking everywhere is a mall in montreal literally walk into almost any door or go down any path and I can assure you you'll probably find a shoe store.
As for shit food like other anon said, why dont you check where you're going? Some of the best food I've ever had was in downtown montreal and not too far from there.
rip ;_;
Only 22k people this year. It's been growing more slowly.
>>9596223
It was osheaga weekend and 375 anniversary of Montreal.
Hotel rates got jacked up this
