Military Gear Cosplay General /mgc/
>Here we go again/The Lord Edition

This thread is to talk about cosplays involving Gear, to help each other with identification and to improve on ourselves. Please keep strictly military topics to /k/ or strictly airsoft topics to /asp/.

Metal Gear, STALKER, Resident Evil Fan? Or something completely different? Feel free to check out this thread.

Links:
https://pastebin.com/t40v7Ly7

Feel free to submit new shops, to improve the experience. I will then update the pastebin.

>Do you work on any gear related cosplays at the moment?
>Should this become a regular thread?
>Have you enjoyed the last thread? Anything I can do to improve it?
>Are you going to attend Gamescom? If so, with what cosplay?

Pic related is me, first time fitting some of the stuff for Tachanka. Clearly not done, but I like the way this is going. Now waiting for the next Greyshop order to arrive.

Thanks man, but I hope you'll enjoy the results much more!

To be a bit of a samefag:
>Do you work on any gear related cosplays at the moment?
Still Tachanka, waiting for a package from the Motherland. Also thinking about Fuze, but it's a thing for the future.
>Should this become a regular thread?
I very much do hope so. /k/ isn't exactly the right place for it, /asp/ is cancer.
>Have you enjoyed the last thread? Anything I can do to improve it?
Well, get people in here faggot
>Are you going to attend Gamescom? If so, with what cosplay?
Tuesday: Nick Rye from Far Cry 5
Wednesday: Not sure yet, at the moment.
Thursday: Venom Snake
Friday-Saturday: Tachanka
I'm a bit of a sucker for Ubi currently.
>also: Have you ever improved your Cosplay over time?
My Snake really has come quite a way, people would probably not notice, but I'm happier with it now. I'll receive a bunch of Russian VSS Pouches soon, as they resemble the ones from ingame closer than the actual M56 US Pouches.
>>
so this might be an incredibly stupid question but w/e. I really want to do olga gurlukovich from mgs2, hopefully from the tanker not thee plant, but ive never done a military gear cosplay before, just stuff from anime. From the research ive done its seems like the exact stuff she has is both hard to find and very expensive. My question is, would it be better to either, buy something close but not exact, try to make something myself, or try to increase my budget and keep searching. also any tips on this specific cosplay would be welcome
>>
>>9568679
So you want the version with the top instead of the fully dressed one?

In general I'd say try and mix: If your thing is next level rare (Night Vision Goggles for example), do it yourself. If it's a bit of older Militaria, just try and go for the higher budget. If it's *really* expensive try to go for the close enough - but beware: Some items have clones. which are way cheaper but still "the same".

>Do you work on any gear related cosplays at the moment?
Yep, got an MSG2 and MGS4 Vamp done.

Nah, might host an MGS meet at BCC though.

Looks like TTsKO or Flora (or maybe even just plain Gorka) pants, a black Telnyashka, and a Soviet era belt with Makarov holster.
It's really hard to tell what that pattern is by the low res model and concept art.
>>
>>9571385
I'd go with TTsKO, according to the Soldiers from the same sequence. Buying TTsKO is not impossible. The guys on the red alliance forum might have something for you.

I'm going to be doing my first ever cosplay in a couple days. What do you guys think about someone cosplaying someone they don't really look like? Asking because I'm going to be Naked Snake and my skin tone is way darker than his, and I can't get a wig to look good so I'm not going to bother, but my hair is different than his.

Any cool looking female characters to cosplay? I've done eva from metal gear but that was a lazy cosplay. I like resident evil as well as kawaii army shit
>>

I'm sorry, olga anon here, i don't want to keep posting hand holdy questions but I have one more. I've had some luck finding what i've been looking for but ive had a hard time finding things that I think would fit me as my waist is 26.5 inches and the smallest size seems to be for a 30in waist and my height is 172 cm putting me at a 3 or a 4. do things like this tend to run true to size or would I have to try to take it in? if so does anyone have experience doing this. Also it seems it much easier/cheaper to find the Ukrainian version of ttsko, should I go for it or are the differences enough to be noticeable/ will anyone give a shit
>>
>>9576038
I got it used, but I think it's a grey shop repro, but an older generation. Has Bastion Logos everywhere, but those don't mean crap. I'll let you know about a Defender from a Friend, who just bought his.

>>9576436

>>9576809
Just about every manufacturer of every Camo does it a little different. Nobody will notice. Regarding size: I think you should stick to a 3. These usually are a bit bigger. With the belt: Get the smallest and modify it. Or at least wait till it arrives and head here again. Good luck, tovarich!

Mute would definitely be the easiest, you can buy replica GSR masks off Amazon for less than $50, and unlike Thatcher he doesn't use what appears to be knockoff of the 80's era anti-terror uniform, so putting his kit together is just a matter of figuring out what he's wearing and buying a replica

Are you looking specifically for army+camo styles or anything soldier-y that you can wear tactical gear with? I don't know much "kawaii army shit", but I tend to gravitate towards combat and soldier characters for my own cosplay choices so I know several.

SNK's Ikari Warriors, Metal Slug, and Ikari team in King of Fighters. Leona and Whip don't wear too much tactical gear in their canon designs but that doesn't mean you can't add some in. The KoF XIV designs would look cool with some more military gear.

Masamune Shirow stuff like GitS, Appleseed, and Dominion (Tank Police). Don't forget the GitS First Assault designs like pic related.

Hibana, Twitch, Mira, Frost, Valkyrie, Caveira, and IQ from Rainbow Six Siege.

Lara Croft has some alternate outfits in the two most recent Tomb Raider games that would work. http://tombraider.wikia.com/wiki/Lara%27s_Outfits (scroll to Survivor Timeline)

Sometimes mech anime with military themes has characters in vaguely military/tactical stuff, like Melissa Mao from Full Metal Panic.
>>
>>9580626
>>9580689
ok i'm fucking stumped. I can find things that somewhat close but everything is missing something. any field uniforms I find are either closed collar or don't have any piping. the ones that have piping seem to all be parade uniforms. this new reference I found with pockets makes it even more confusing. the closet thing that i've seen was actually a polish WWII not one from the USSR in the 1960's. Should I give up looking? is it most likely that is based on a real uniform instead of actually being one and just make/alter one? i'm getting sort of frustrated and Id like input
>>
>>9585590
I would say get the closest thing and then modify it. Konami was pretty accurate with the US gear, but they knew fuck all about the Soviet stuff so it makes sense that it's not really based off of anything and was just made to look Soviet; kind of like how Sean Connery's uniform in 'The Hunt For Red October' where it's based off of a Soviet sub commander's uniform, but isn't exactly right.
>>
>>9585590
>>9585601
Hell now that I think of it, it could be a US uniform modified to look Soviet.

nah, I just brought it because I wanted a coat that would last and it was cheap, I looked at how well it was made to see if it was sturdy then I checked the tags and it looked legit, the tag said 1942. It's not even for a costume I just wanted a warm coat that won't break when I wear it all the time I just thought it would be good to ask here in case anyone knew I was ruining something that a lot of people would have of really appreciated, so honestly I'd guess I'd rather it be fake or not have too much value.

I figured this would be the best place to ask about props at cons. Most require the weapon to have no moving parts. I saw some resin guns but those aren't models that I'm looking for. Is there some way to get airsoft guns into code for cons?
>>
>>9591251
If you're in a country where airsoft guns have mandatory Orange Tips, no problem. Countries such as Germany, where Airsoft guns are related to gun laws, because there is no obvious markings, it's nearly impossible. If you're looking very common guns, such as some pistols, AKs and M4s, you could buy a rubber one of Ebay, as most cons allow those
>>
>>9591251
Lock all moving parts in place with adhesive or epoxy?

Cheers! I'm willing to bet there's not a prop or airsoft version in existance, but maybe I could scavenge a bubba'd or demilled one for the purpose... The trick would be at cons that dont like/can tell which firearms are real. The prop enfield still may be handy.

It'd be pretty hard to find even a bubba'd or demilled one to be honest. I had to pay a bit more than I wanted to for mine, and they've just been going up in price.

Honestly, a Lebel is pretty simply designed when compared to later guns. You could probably make it yourself if you're really dedicated.

What does MGS3 Ocelot wear in his design? I haven't the slightest clue what to look for when I'm looking for a uniform.
I wouldn't mind making it myself, but I don't know what sort of pattern I'd be using, either.

His uniform is fictitious for the most part, so unfortunately you can't outright get milsurp to match.

I did an MGS3 Ocelot cosplay recently and it turned out pretty nice. I used a Rothco BDU as the base for the jacket, just took off the top pockets and did a couple of mods and got SS reenactment wool pants. The boots are East German, but beware with those because they all tend to be insanely small around the calves, so these in the photo really didn’t fit me and looked awkward.

I’m currently re-doing the costume to make it better since there's a lot to improve, so I’m tearing up the BDU jacket to use as a pattern to remake it in wool since the two different materials clashed in photos pretty bad, and I recently got some actual Soviet officer boots which are the proper height and fit and look vastly better. Still to get are new holsters since these looked and functioned like garbage, but that's a costly part of the costume so it can wait.

Another Ocelot Cosplayer here, can confirm that his uniform is more or less unique and doesn't have a real world equivalent.

For mine I actually found a sewing pattern that needed minor adjustments in order to get the looks/sizing right in certain places. The shoulder boards I made myself and actually have them attached via some special safety pins (though I should probably try to make smaller ones/sew them on in the future). Out of all of the badges/ribbons he has, the small square one I never was able to find any sort of real world equivalent, but the blue-ish white one is a Soviet VDV/paratrooper drop badge. For the ribbons I took a small piece of cardboard, glued it to a safety pin, and wrapped thread around them in proper intervals. The little insignias on his collar I did just based off of how they looked in the MGS3 HD version, though I know his new HD design in the pachinko version actually has a specific insignia on it.

Pic related, sorry if it's small, I don't have the picture on my computer atm so I grabbed it off IG

You look fantastic!

Where did you get your holsters from, or did you make them? It's hard to find some that have the right look and aren't outrageously expensive.

As far as the shoulder boards go, I think yours look fine. I made mine as well and sized them exactly how generic Soviet ones would be and they look to be the same exact size as what you have, as far as I can see in the photo.

idk why you guys thinking wearing that shit is cool. Shit's hot and fucking heavy. Right when you're about to find that perfect position to take a nap, there's a pitch or a sweat bead tickles your asshole and it itches.. battle rattle sucks.

Thanks, I really appreciate it! Out of anyone I've cosplayed thus far I've definitely put the most time (and money, RIP) into Ocelot, so it means a lot!

As for the holsters, I'd have to look up the specific site I got them from, but I -think- it was from midwayusa? These are made for 7 1/2 inch barrels since that's the size my replicas are. I want to say that they cost me about $60 each (Large size for the waist, XL for the shoulder one) which is pricy, but they're very good quality and this was my first "big" cosplay. You're definitely right though, it's really tough to find holsters that aren't too expensive or have lots of cowboy stuff on them. If you're the crafty type, if you've got a hobby-lobby or a similar craft store nearby, I do know that some of them sell leather kits for holsters that you may be able to look into?

I think from the front they're fine as well as the sides, but someone looking at them from a slight downward angle might notice that they're a touch wide. Your boards look perfect though from what I saw (if you're the same poster from earlier), not to mention the time you took to measure them out correctly. I was crunched on time near the end, so I sort of just eyeballed/saw how they looked as they were on the uniform.

Oh dude, same… I dropped easy $300~$350 on it, which isn’t a lot for a cosplay, but for something more on the simple side it added up way faster than expected, and I’m still putting more into it (I am the one in the previous photo).

$60 for each holster isn’t too bad, considering they look great! I’m really cheap, though, when it comes to gear unless I can actually still use it out of cosplay, and I wouldn't be using these holsters at all outside of it (irony is that I'm not actually a fan of revolvers). Another problem with my costume that I’m fixing now is the inaccurate guns. I had to have something that was for sure convention safe, so the ones I’m holding are cast rubber Rugers, which are WAY larger than what they should have been. Lucky for me one of the engineers I work with is a CAD genius, so he’s 3D printing me exact copies of Ocelot’s right now, but he also looked up the weight distribution and is putting weights in them so they can be spun, which I’m so grateful for. I’m thinking what I’ll do with the holsters is make a frame out of worbla and then cover them with leather so they’re not floppy and have the right look/color I’m going for. I did recently alter the belts, too, so they can hold the correct caliber of cartridge, so that’ll be added in on the next wear.

Also, in case you needed it, the dimensions of the shoulder boards are 13.5cm X 6cm. If you didn’t do this already, then you can buy bags of Soviet shoulder board stars for like $10 shipped, and they just pin right in. Best of luck to you!

First anon that asked about Ocelot back again, where did you folks get your replica guns? I'm not even sure if I want to drop cash on them yet (I'm in California, con gun regulations are a bit finicky) but id like to get some sources in the event I end up deciding to get them.

I think I've put somewhere between $250-300 in mine, but sewing a pattern vs buying actual real world uniform pieces definitely saved me some money. Recently I bought a wooden Makarov kit that I'm going to put together for him, and I need to figure out something to do for an AK Bayonet scabbard + fake blade at some point in the future too.

Thanks! They were worth it in terms of quality like I said, and they're real leather so there's that too. That's great to hear about your friend though and how he can get you some 3D printed ones, and the weight distribution is great as well. Since mine are about 80% metal, they definitely are heavy and good for spinning, but a bit of a pain to carry all day in holsters due to how heavy they are. I'd recommend for Orange tips as well to use those cheap safety earplugs too to plug the barrels. Easy to remove/put in and 99% of the time people can't tell a difference. between that and actual tips. For your idea with the belts themselves, if you happen to need some extra padding for the cartridges (the fakes I had are slightly smaller than the real caliber), stuffing the loops with bits of cotton balls are good for a firm hold while keeping it hidden as well.

Thanks for the sizes! I'll see about measuring later and see how they compare. I might go the route and get some board stars though, especially if I redo the boards all together. For mine I embroidered gold thread into the boards to make the designs, which ended up being a lot more work than I originally expected.

My Replicas are Denix 7/12 inch Single Action Armies in black. They're hefty, which makes them pretty good for spinning (if you want to do that), but otherwise over the course of a convention they do get kind of heavy and bear down on you. They're full metal with wooden handles, have a working action, you can spin the cylinder, and even open it up to put in blanks, but the barrel is removable so you can show con security that the barrel is plugged and non-firing. If I were you, I'd carefully read over the regulations for your con and your state. I'm from NJ (laws here are strict too) and the first year I brought them to a con security had no problem with them at all. This year though after that one retard was caught before he shot up that comic con, they said no (though I am salty since I was still within con regulation with orange tip and all, but whatever). Alternatively try looking for cheap plastic revolvers, since a lot of them are modeled after SAA's. I did that and repainted a pair recently and they look good enough.

Pic related, plastic ones on the left after repainting, and my replicas on the right

My nice/accurate guns aren't finished yet, but for-sure convention safe guns are these:
http://www.coldsteel.com/ruger-super-redhawk-rubber-training-revolver.html

I can't remember what site I got them from, but I watched for a sale and got them both for $40. They're great for conventions with stricter rules, though; no moving parts, no opening on the barrel, and can be bent to show how fake they are. Painting was a little harder due to the material, but if you prime them and put a finish on then the paint will stay pretty well. I dropped mine so many times over the weekend and only minor chipping down to the green. However, they're much larger than a standard SAA, so if that bothers you then I do also recommend the Denix if you're willing to spend a little more.

Originally I just wanted to the Makarov version (for cheapass reasons), but the convention I was planning this costume for announced David Hayter and Troy Baker as guests about a week before I finished so all the revolver/belt/holster stuff was pretty rushed since I decided it was all or nothing. But I got a nice replica Makarov very cheap with a surplus holster; it’s amazing how much more expensive revolver stuff is, so you should have a very easy time with that out of the way!

I never even thought about the earplug idea, so thank you very much! That was one thing I was worried about was making the guns con friendly if they’d even be allowed in, so that’s a great idea. I was going to cut up water balloons and just pull them over tip of the barrel lol…. But your suggestion with the belts is exactly what I did. Thankfully the one belt was the right caliber, but the other (more visible one) is miserable .22, but lucky for me the sections were just separated with metal staples so I was able to pull every other one out and hot glue in a piece of foam to adjust the size back down and it works like a charm and looks completely fine.

I’m really impressed you took the time to embroider, though; that’s some serious dedication!

Do you mind sharing your insta so I can follow?
