I'm calling this good enough for the pointless side-project it is. Some things I noticed for next time; do way more sanding, use more layers of filler so I won't get these visible dents, use hard body orange acrylics next time. Oh, and mask off the surrounding areas because this stupid hand tremor of mine is making painting straight lines a real bitch.

He keeps shitting on other photographers. I would never want to shoot with someone who talks so low about others. When I plan a photoshoot I want to make sure that the photographer is nice to hang out with. So there will not be a lot of awkward situaties. And I also hava a nice day. His behaviours doesn't help him at all.
I scrolled though the post and a couple of cosplayers also said they would love to shoot with him. But they ofcourse didn't get any respons from him. He complains about photographers being picky and 'tietenschieters'. But he doesn't act much different.

Agreed. I like him as a person but photography wise he's nothing that catches the eye. He does the job though, he works hard, and everytime I see him he has a positive attitude. That's also worth a lot.

There are a lot of photographers out there that I'd love to work with, but I'm meh about approaching them. Velvet Art is definitely one of those, but also Miradel, or moriartician on insta, or Stephanie Lechner. Instead I just quietly hope I happen to run into them one day and they will have their camera with them.

There are always different opinions about photographer etc.

Velvet art and Miradel are indeed good photgraphers, there are alot of good foreign photographer who also come to Animecon etc.

jacky is indeed more a con photographer, decent but dont see why people have him in such high regards ( photograhp wise ).


But you also get that with enough cosplayers. It all depends on your experience with them and what you know/hear.

It's a hobby that, at entry level, requires zero talent, creativity or hard work while still getting someone lots of positive attention just by being a not-completely-hideous girl. The whole purpose of a fansign, in my opinion, is to get something that actually comes from the cosplayer that you like/follow. If it's completely handwritten, or partially, or not, it's still a picture taken by the cosplayer. So there's still effort into it. No matter if its digital or not, photoshopped or not, they still put effort into it by even making the fansign. Typing is still writing.
Doesn't matter wether I wrote it, or typed it, there's still a name with the same amount of letters.

At least he never said he is the best photographer. From what I know is he is indeed a very nice guy and always open to help other without asking anything back for it. ( which is a bit stupid if you ask me)

But apparently he and his wife help the cosplayers a lot with posing and giving positive feedback. I guess being a photographer is not only about taking a good photo. Having a good time and also able to learn from it makes his bette than others.

I went to his workshop and I really enjoyed it I have to say. I expected to be some standard shit again. Which it was in away but he and Ilunaneko brought it nice and I did take something away from it. I can understand that some people think he is arrogant but believe me he is just busy.

Once you do get to talk to him he is like many other say a nice guy. Which in my book has means a point more than the other photographers.

People are paying jackie for shoots, and those dva photos are a bit embarrassing for a paid shoot. Some of the pictures taken by the cosplayers boyfriend or even selfies look better. It’s great that he’s a nice guy. But when you hire a professional, what you really want are great photo's. When you pay for a professional kitchen designer you want that kitchen design that makes you go wow. And you'd be right to expect that, because that’s why you pay a professional to do it. If you pay a professional and he or she is nice but can’t deliver on quality it’s basically a bad job. At least Velvet Art’s photo’s do have that wow factor to it. No boyfriend, girlfriend or selfieattempt is going to accidentally be a better photo. And that’s what you normally pay a pro for. But that’s why his only customers are friends from the cosplay circle and most other work for organizations is because he’s willing and willing to do it for free. You can either call that hard working or the reason why other professionals can’t get paid jobs anymore.

Anyone that knows jacky , knows he likes to boast about when he just ate a potato. Although it's possible that one or two clients have nda's the idea that he has pleeenty other jobs he never posts is pulled completely out of nowhere. A photographers photo's is his resume. He clearly has nowhere enough shoots to be a fulltime photographer even if you include a few nda clients. Which he isn't. Why try to defend that? It just asked to be debunked. Like said before the man likes to boast about having eaten a potato even if the client is nda it wouldn't stop him from posting on social media that he is on another job, which is obviously few if you take count. By that count Velvet Art has more paid jobs than he has. If you can't see how average his photo's are, there is really no point in debating taste and style. How many focus points does one photographer need to make one sharp photo of a d.va cosplayer? More than half of the photo's is getting the cosplayers face in the same unflattering angle. And people see him as arrogant not because he seems busy at cons. But because he likes to pick only cosplayers with lot's of likes or status or really pretty to shoot with and has been doing so for several years now. It's his own cherry picking behaviour that has given him the arrogant status and not the rumors. And the lack of quality to support that cherry picking behaviour and the character trait that he likes to baost about things does not help.

I am really tired of dutch cosplay photography as a whole.

9/10 it's just crappy pinup with bad direction, bland and uninteresting technical stuff and hardly any real "costume play"

There is not a sense of people acting out a scene or paying real homage to the source material, it's just mainly girls trying to be supermodels and making awkward and self aware poses.

Creativity in the current slew of photographers is kind of dead to me.

Also, all the motherfucking drama and arrogance and photographers measuring their dicks with terribly expensive equipment they often not really know how to use to it's full potential.

Most pics I see can be taken on a simple Nikon D3200 with a cheap ass flash.

I am not sure what you do for work or how much knowledge you have (not attacking just asking) about media material. I work in the multi media market and work with a lot of photos and photographers.

All of them are paid and the photos that are delivered are mostly as a assignment. We pay for the assignment and the right to use them for commercials brochures etc etc. The price is included to NOT to credit the photographer.

So he might do more paid shoots and we will never know about it. And secondly let’s be honest, I don’t think he needs the income from his photography.

I think he works at a IT company or something like that so he already has a full time job. And his photography business is just something extra.

And I disagree with that he is cherry picking. He had been shooting with PRISM for a long time way before they won any contest ( god knows why they would even win anything).

The only shoot he had with maybe a lot of likes is maybe Ilunaneko ? In that sense plenty other photographer shoot with only cosplayers with more likes. So that is not a good argument.

Hey, I mean it's great you can enjoy something I don't but if you've been at the Japantag 2017 in Düsseldorf, you might think a little bit different about the topic.

But don't worry, I won't further talk about the topic of a rising macho like community that have a big interest in barely clothed cosplaying girls at free and public events. Because that isn't a problem.

I think it's mostly a miscommunication between cosplayers and photographers.
Many photographers think that cosplayers know their source material and know which poses would work for their sauce. However as a cosplayer myself I often feel myself wondering what the hell could work as a cool pose for my character, even if i know the background well.
I like it if the photographer knows a little bit about the source, or asks about it and you figure out together what would be a cool pose for the eventual results.

I would not call them the best cosplayers but some prism members have done some small competitions, like ECG 2016 and Ilunaneko goes to WCS next year with Toki.
So, yes, when people are on this low level, I can imagine you missed them.

i did some trouble to look them up and Ilunaneko is pretty decent.

Prism is just a waste of time. They only got 2 decent cosplayers and the rest just sucks. I think everyone can guess which 2 i am talking about.
