>trimming nails short tonight because they're looking like hot garbage and need to grow out

Grow back stronger, girls. ;_;7

On that note, my niece tells me cuticle oil is super important for growing them fast without making them brittle and to never buff them (I haven't in months). What are your nailcare routines like?

Does anyone do their own nails? I've gotten really into gel and acrylic recently. I'm def not pro level yet, but each time is getting a little easier! I have a drill coming tomorrow, I'm pretty stoked for that.

nail feel
>wear acrylics nearly all of last year
>get new job where I can't have them

the hours and money are good but having no nails blows
>>
>>9559769
I've recently started doing my own nails, but I've just been putting the polish right on my actual nails. it's a pain in the ass to scrape and remove all of the old polish off to put on some fresh stuff or just let my nails "breathe" a little bit.

I also struggle so much with getting nail polish goo all over the sides of my nailbed, on the skin right were my nail meets my finger. I've been improving though. Would acrylics be easier?
>>
>>9559784
>scraping
you know nail polish remover exists right
>>
Can I request some inspo? I'm looking for cute nails that will match my wardrobe- I wear mostly reds, blacks, greys, navies and whites in a sweet style.
I also love the colour pink but I feel it would clash with my every day style...
>>
How do you 'prepare' for a manicure? Do you try to grow out your nails so they can be professionally evened up? Come in with bare nails? Do artists care what your hands look like?
>>
Can someone recommend some press on 3d nail shops online? I've gone through Kawaiiclaws but I'm looking for more option.
>>
>>9559769
I do my own nails with help. Would love to try out acrylic as well. Which do you prefer?
I make lots of mistakes, but my nails do look nice and polished 99% of the time now. Previously I would only very rarely do my nails, because they'd last for a day or two.

>>9561363
With gel, thank you very much autocorrect.

PSA to stop biting your nails.

Admittedly I started as a kid as a symptom of OCD, but still.
My fingers all curl back at the tips because they never had the pressure of nails to keep them straight, and my lil' pinky fingers are deformed with early-onset arthritis at 22.

>tfw your pretty nails will always look like witches claws. ;n;
>>
>>9559994
Is this your first manicure? Your best bet is probably to go in with bare nails, but the technician will probably give your nails a once over with some remover anyway to get any remaining bits off.

As for growing them out, that depends on whether you're just getting a colour put on, or if you're getting extensions. If it's just a polish or gel colour, your own nails at the length you want is probably ideal. They'll neaten them up for you. If you're getting extensions, it probably doesn't matter but I'm no expert about those.

When I've had my nails done before, they've never cared about my hands so I wouldn't worry. They probably see heaps of hands all day, so unless you have unusual hands, they probably won't stand out.
>>
>>9559955
yeah, I sounded like a dumbass when I said that. But remover still has a hard time getting it off, it doesn't seem to want to come cleanly. I quit using Q-tips because they left fuzzy shit, and I've tried remover with and without acetone. Rip.
>>
>>9561386
PSA to mind your own business desu, fuck out of here with this bullshit attempt at internet martyrdom over something you at least vaguely realize can be more than just a bad habit. No nail-biter is going to read your post and think "huh! no one has ever told me to stop biting before, and I had no idea there might be negative side effects!" So what's your actual point, other than possible pity comments on an anonymous image board?
Also who tf told you your pinkies are "deformed" because you were a nail biter?? Anon you're a mess, wow.
>>
>>9562069
Why are you so upset?
>>
>>9562071
Because this is hands-down the dumbest post I've seen on cgl all day.
>>
>>9562069
>mfw I'm a nail biter and that post made me think I was fucking my nails up even more than I thought.

Are you a fellow nail biter anon?
>>
>>9562074
Very much so. I'm currently getting professional help for an anxiety disorder which has helped way more than stupid shit like >>9561386. Nail biting is considered a form of "pathological grooming" that professionals are now talking about in the same conversation as dermatillomania/trichotillomania, which means embarrassing or frightening someone because of their compulsive habits can heighten anxiety and make the problem worse. If this habit is causing you significant problems (constantly bleeding or infected cuticles/nails, etc), please try to go see a professional.
>>
>>9562086
>>9562069
I mean, it's a nail thread and the anon saw it and felt bad about their nails. CGL is full of feefees in the various threads and I don't think it was an actual PSA like tumblr-style, "help!!! now I've saved you!!! careful!!!"

I have OCD and all the fun compulsive shit. If anything it's just refreshing to see more of you outside a treatment setting.
>>
>>9562090
Honestly if that post had been more to the tune of "I used to be a nail biter and now my nails don't grow the way they wish they would", there wouldn't have been anything wrong with it imo. But it definitely read like a tumblr-style PSA to me and that's why I'm rustled.

Also
>If anything it's just refreshing to see more of you outside a treatment setting.
Agreed, lol.
>>
>>9561363
I use both! Sometimes I do a design with acrylic (like encapsulating glitter or something) and top it with a gel topcoat, or I use the acrylic as just a base to polish.

>>9559784
I think polishing acrylic is easier than a natural nail, but that's just me. Unless you mean coloured acrylic? In which case you would still want a topcoat.
>>
thank u for the donotbiteyournails inspo. does anyone have any tips for breaking the habit? ive been biting mine down for at least 20 years :c i need halp send me to rehab
>>
>>9562059
What kind of polish are you using that using remover won't take it off?
If you're having issues, try letting the remover soak into the polish with a cotton pad/ball (both are super cheap at a dollar store) for about 40 seconds, and then buff the polish away. It'll take a bit of effort, but fresh remover and cotton pads will do the trick. I go through 5 pads to get all my polish off. Scraping the nail can cause some issues with chipping and peeling later.
With typical polishes, the polish that touches your skin will come off with a couple of hand washes. Polish doesn't like to adhere to skin because your natural oils cause it to lift, and then it gets washed away. If you want it to look clean right after you've applied it, get a cheap small paint brush and dip it in remover to clean up the edges.
>>
>>9562171
thanks for the advice. I use pretty normal polish, no gels or anything fancy. Sally Hansen, OPI, Essie regular polishes less than 6 months old.
>>
>>9562146
Anti-bite clear nail polish, I'm sure any brand will do but I use Barielle. Apply every other day. There's literally no way you will bite your nails with it on, it tastes like acid sourness and you just spend the next few minutes spitting. Only downside is that you kind of have to avoid finger-foods because just touching your nail to a fry will make it taste sour. Shit works, confirmed, just remember to use it. Once your nails are a decent length go get them done really nicely, which will make you not want to ruin them. You can apply the anti-bite over the mani also if you're worried.
>>
>>9562209
Is it glitter polish? That's a pain to get off but there are peel off basecoats. I have one called unt that works really well.
>>
>>9562242
one time it was, and that was the worst of them all. I'll look into it, thanks anon
>>
>>9562146
Reformed biter here, my nails are awesome now. Different things work for different people but here's what I have tried from middling to great success.

>bitter nail polish
Didn't do much for me
>cute nail polish
Makes me want to protect them more
>carry small fidget toys
Not shit like a fidget spinner, but small polished rocks, pens, rings
>tell close friends
So they can help you when you do it semi consciously
>see doctor
If you bleed then you should get therapy so it doesn't get worse from stress
>>

thank you lovely anons ;-; i bought nail growth and anti bite polishes. my job is pretty rough on my hands as well, so i started wearing work gloves.
>>
>>9562059
Use pure acetone.
>>
>>9562059
>>9562452
Yeah, see if you can find 100% pure acetone. Locally, I can buy it at Wal*Mart and Sally Beauty Supply.

I also use an old sock to remove my polish. The acetone combined with the grit of the sock removes polish far easier. If you are using glitters, it is perfectly normal for it to take 15-20+ minutes to fully remove the more condensed glitters. The grit of the cloth does help in this regard.

I'm not sure how other anon is using acrylic for their nails but in my opinion no, doing your own acrylics would not be easier than painting your nails with nail polish, especially if you already struggle with precision. The best way to practice normal polish is just to do them lots. Make sure you don't have too much on the brush and don't try to get it right where the cuticle meets the nail. Start slightly after it so there's a gap between your cuticle and where you lay the polish. After a while you'll know exactly how much polish you need on your brushes to do one stroke that goes all the way down your nail. A couple of neat strokes per nail is all you need, and then seal the nail by putting a thin coat over the end of your nail and slightly underneath. That stops chipping happen so fast. That plus base and top coat, plus touch ups and my normal nail polish lasts about a week.

I did my own acrylics for a while and even after lots of practice it was still hard to get them looking perfect. There's a reason only nail technicians do acrylics.. that and the fact that theyre very strong chemicals that stink your house out.

For a long lasting colour you could buy a UV gel lamp and do your own gels which is pretty easy, but you do need to soak them off unlike normal polish where you can just rub it off with acetone.

>>9559759
My routine is just take off polish, file them, push back cuticles and put on new polish. I should really get some cuticle oil because my nails could be stronger. I want them all like my thumb nail which is like immovable. pic is my nails like a month ago, they've grown longer since then lmao
