Let's share /cgl/ related mangas!
It can either be mangas that just inspires you or that are actually about cosplay, lolita or japanese alt fashion

Pic related, Candycandy and similar mangas were wayyy too romance centred for me to enjoy but god, those clothes.
I'm starting to read Beauty Pop which is centered on makeup/hair/nails/... and isn't a typical shoujo were the heroine gets a makeover/gets all emotional over teh boiz!/the boys fighting for her/...

I was also heavily inspired by Chobits and Sakura Card Captor for lolita back then.

>I was also heavily inspired by Chobits and Sakura Card Captor for lolita back then.
you must've been a massive ita

anyway old classic manga like rose of versailles and candycandy actually inspired some girls to make lolita clothing in japan but I've never seen a manga with a character that wears lolita that is actually good except Nana maybe. and I hate weebs, there is already a book and othe rmedia thread so I'm going to leave this thread forever now.
>>
>>9533676
There is lots of mangas with lolitas, obviously rozen maiden comes to mind, ibitsu for a guro lolita, there is also a mystery manga but i forgot the name
>>
Umineko lol
>>

Who WASN'T a CCS or Chobits fan when they were younger?

>>9533698
lol, same. Funnily, I used to like Lamdadelta the most, even though her outfit was the most ita. But I still really like the outfits of Maria, Erika or Beato.

Going to crosspost from the other thread and recommend Dolls by Yumiko Kawahara again. It isn't lolita of course, but the art and clothing are beautiful and I love these type of quirky-creepy stories.

Onii sama e. Mariko is really pretty and definitely reminds me of lolita. I'd love to cosplay from this series with a friend
>>
There's Cat Street, a manga about a school for unusual students, including a well dressed lolita, and Paradise Kiss. One of the main characters is a sweet lolita and the manga as a whole is about fashion.

I didnt read the manga desu but I watched the anime. Its about an all girls school and all the pettiness that happens. 10/10 would recommend
>>
>>9533679
Kind of but even now I think CLAMPs designs are so cool.
They just don't translate so well in real life (especially that one outfit with all the ribbons) and don't work for lolita in general though. Still really inspiring to look at.

Everything from Mihara Mitsukazu. Besides the art she made for the Gothic Lolita Bible, she also wrote manga's that have characters in Lolita(inspired) clothing. Must admit some stories are crazy, some are cruel and some very sad, but I loved reading every manga!

The live-action from Deka Wanko has been an inspiration for some Lolita's. It also featured famous Lolita models and brands. But, there also is a manga, which has stories that aren't in the live-action.

Nokemono to Hanayome is a manga that was featured in the Gothic Lolita Bible as well and has been released by KERA. It also featured characters in outfits inspired by Lolita/BtSSB.
>>
>>9533794
Oh! That sounds super fun I should definitely read it instead of watching it.

I'm going to add Gosick to that list. Because Victorique De Blois.

I love Gosick! I am happy they did a collaboration with Innocent World. Someday I will own the set!
To add to this, the manga Dantalian no Shoka fits with this series very well. Plus, the outfits were designed by Baby!

This series doesn't feature a Lolita, but has been a big inspiration for me. It's an older one, that you might recognise from the Gothic Lolita Bible as well. Recently there was a collaboration with metamorphose, but that dress was too expensive for me.
It's Versailles no Bara or The Rose of Versailles, or in some countries Lady Oscar. The story is set in Rococo-era France and evolves around Oscar. A noble woman who is Marie-Antoinette her guard. The story is a very beautiful one, about love, classes. Definitly a recommendation for those who love Historical manga. (Also the costumes are so beautiful!)
>>

This manga actually influenced lolita fashion as a whole

>Did it even air in the west?
>Implying everyone on this board wasn't a huge weeb at some point or another

It doesnt really matter if an anime didn't air in the west because everyone was streaming mirrors online anyway come on now
>>
>>9533917
I've never seen it. I guess most people on cgl are weebs but I don't come here often and I never had a weeb or anime phase.
>>
>>9533917
Oldfag here, there was no streaming or torrents when I was a kid. However CCS was on American TV under the name "Cardcaptors". It was heavily chopped up and edited because they tried to make Syoran the main character and market it to boys.
>>
>>9533708
I used to watch it in spanish.

What's she up to these days? She had a brief period of popularity over here in the US and then I don't think anything of hers has been brought over since Tokyopop folded. I liked Doll, it reminded me a bit of Black Jack the way the stories were constructed having some sort of moral lesson or poetic justice at the end.
>>
>>9533937
C of cgl is cosplay is a weeb hobby. But uh CCS did air in the west and was popular. Chobits is more the style than the weird plot.
>>
Always think of Lolita when I look at Ibitsu, tho the story isn't about cosplay or anything. Still a good read when you like gore-ish things.
>>
>>9533941
Here in Europe they showed it fully with the girl as the hero. I always watched it as a child. We had more female heroine animes in those days.

To the other anon, I don't think chobits has aired here.
>>
>>9533958
>weird plot

the plot was actually incredibly insightful and ahead of its time and now more than ever makes you think about how the world is filled with people closer to their screens than to other people and live through their phones.
>>
>>9533955
Her last manga release seems to be from 2015, she also has a release for something coming up, but it seems like she mosly makes artwork related things now.

God yes. But never watched it for the same reason.
I love that cheesy cutesy frilly/ruffly retro shoujomanga aesthetic but the story is always terribly boring and so romance centred and I honestly cannot bear a romance centred plot.
Even if it's between two girls where I can relate more, it becomes annoying pretty quick.
>>
>>9534100
For me the romance drama old shoujos are my guilty pleasures in life. I love to use them as escapism and can't get enough of it.

I cri errytime
>>
>>9533795
the manga isn't good imho
>>
>>
my friend spotted lolitas in Detective Conan yesterday, i was pretty surprised there's a whole episode centred around them.
>tfw one dies
;_;7
>>
>>9535231
what season/episode? The only j-fashion I remember from Conan was when this guy was serial murdering gyarus.
>>
>>9535248
I think it's the 575-576 episode.
It's the case n°203 in the manga. And the fashion plays a big part in solving the murder
>>
Usamaru Furuya is making a manga about a twenty something gothic lolita that makes BJDs, it's called Amane Gymnasium. I hope more of it gets translated because it has a lot of info about dollmaking and seventies shoujo manga.
>>

Cardcaptors aired in the U.S. There was a website for it, and merchandise could easily be found at Blockbuster.

I don't think Chobits ever aired on TV, but the manga was well received. They had box sets that came with a figurine.

Streaming use to be harder to accomplish.

Oniisama e is so good for lolita feels. Lots of talk about looking like a victorian doll, tea parties and pettiness. Plus it's really gay. I have always wanted to cosplay Mariko or anyone really from this anime, but none of my friends like older stuff.
>>
>>9533818
I remember watching this, but the anime.
>>
Gonna say Genshiken is a perfect match for /cgl/, especially when Ohno takes over and males it a cosplay club.
>>
The manga where the girl dress up in a cord with money problems and mental illness. She goes to an Ikemen club and waste all her money there so she prostitutes herself for more money. In they end she becomes used up and ends up in the trash.

Obligatory-- Paradise Kiss which everyone knows about. And Othello- which seems to be less popular. Othello does come off as particularly ita now, but the way the main character feels about meets at the Harajuku bridge has always really resonated with me.

>>9555618
I haven't read Othello in yeeeeears so my memory might be wrong, but didn't she call it Visual Kei? Which would mean it's not ita, just stage-costume-y.
>>
>>9555642
I'm actually re-reading it now because I got all nostalgic. The scanlations all refer to it as cosplay, and I guess I'd forgotten it was kind of centered on a love of a visual kei band in the manga... Still, I feel like it's kind of applicable. And there's other lolita appearances at Harajuku.
>>
>>9555648
Late 90s lolita, visual kei and cosplay all kind of mooshed together at times, so that makes sense, I guess. Heeeeymanacosplay.

It was a good series, though. I liked it.

What has Kaori Yuki been up to recently? Haven't seen anything from her...

It's actually an animu but Stocking from Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt was a lolita.
(and i will forever love her because of how cute and sassy she was)
>>
Tangibly related. VB Rose was cute as fuck, but it's about wedding dresses and making clothes.
>>
>>9533884
For some reason it pisses me off so much that you had to explain BeruBara in cgl like no one had ever heard of it and it was somehow underground or a hidden gem. Call me salty.
>>
>>9566776
I think the majority on cgl give 0 fucks about how lolita started, never looked up anything about it, and don't care what brands do besides AP. I never read manga or anime but I know some of the classics because of lolita.

I think it's interesting that this was the first time an anime was able to accurately portray a Lolita, or at least accurately portray a Gull.
