>Fanime Hires lack luster guests, employs mostly volunteers, charges for the arcade and is ran for profit but also as cheaply as possible
>AX charges for the arcade, concerts and even the masquerade in addition for the badge. Bag check also cost money
Everywhere else outside of CA does not charge for big guests or the arcade yet CA loves piling on the charges. Why is it like this?
This might shock you, but cons around the globe do this. Stop attending them or research conventions you want to attend to see if it's shit or not. Even just asking around might tell you if you may enjoy a con elsewhere.
Because Fanime is shit and AX can get away with it because of its popularity and size
Because CA cons can get away with it. Don't like it? Don't go. Or fly to other cons.
Bitching on cgl isn't going to change a damn thing.
>get away with
>are some of the most profitable cons on earth
Ok.
Btw, the answer is "because the congoers can afford it and are willing to pay." If you're too poor or stingy to pay, someone else will happily take your place. this is really basic economics.

>>profitable cons on earth
Uh, right. AX has to post their accounting numbers to the public since the SPJA is a non-profit organization. They are losing a shit ton of money. They are millions in the red.
>>9499903
Reminder: SPJA is in the red.
The board of directors however, is not.

Almost the entirety of the damage was done by one man in one year. Lattanzio. They had a surplus before that. AX has been steadily working their way back to a surplus and it's actually acceptable in the weirdness of businesses that deficits can be ok as long as your cashflow keeps going
Real reason why AX can keep doing it? Brecause people are willing to pay for what they offer. They get some of the biggest guests and people will throw down money to see them. Instead of having an expensive all inclusive badge like sdcc they have a pay for what you want.

Uh, no. They got much deeper in the hole after Marc took over. You should look at the public docs. Ray has kept his nose clean so far in not being sucked into the dark side.
>>9499673
It's cheaper for me to go to them than flying to an out of state con.
>>9501481
Lattanzio burned like a million bucks . They've been steadily moving towards even. Right now they're at -200k after 2015 (2016 not released yet which is Ray's first year). Lattanzio was the worst thing to happen to AX. I don't have love for Marc's fat ass but he kept things going in the right direction financially. Ray inherited a much better situation than Marc for sure. AX has only recently (maybe two years) gotten to the point where Industry started providing the bulk of guests

There are more cons than AX and Fanime
Honestly, what do you expect from such a shithole state?
>>9499673
Because doing business in California is expensive as fuck. I'd gather even the cons in Sacramento aren't cheap to run.
Because fanime is a really good party con, even if it is run like shit
and AX knows what the fuck they are doing. Refer to idol fans willing to sign their life savings away for all their idorus in one place, very smart move desu.

The douche that runs the sac cons pockets a shitton of the money though. Only the last 3 or so cons have been pulling in decent guests and better panels. Still lacks a real game area though. That sad ass game room only fits maybe 30 people and they really don't want to let others in
>>9508480
It also helps how insulated Sac Anime is. Many people who go to sac anime ONLY go to sac anime. Sac Anime is barely mentioned on my feed and I know a lot of people who go there. It's like there's a big insulated bubble in that con

LA taxes for cons and hotels are pretty insane. I also wouldn't be surprised if they're trying to "price out" people. I wouldn't go if I didn't live here and have half of everyone I know out of state fly in for it, there's much better cons for much less. There's really nothing wrong with just accepting it's expensive and poorly managed and skipping it, s'all good.
Honestly, kind of sad they outgrew the old Anaheim convention center for AX. The current convention center is just so bleak. Even SDCC is in a pretty area where you can wander around.
Is there anything even close to Dragon*Con in California? Not something so specific as San Diego Comic Con, but more like a con version of Labyrinth of Jareth?
>>9509770
There's nothing like D*C in the entire US.
>>9509762
with that ACC expansion coming in soon, maybe they will move AX back?
yeah, i know that will never happen.
>>9503723
For me I can't afford to fly out of state for cons and cost is not justified given most of my friends go to CA cons only.
I just have to accept the shitty practices here

PAX and MagWEST beg to differ
>>9510327
Uh kthx I've been to all 3 and I beg to differ too. When PAX and MAG has 7 bars on a hotel floor and full out orgies readily posted on FetLife I'll go back to those.
>>9510379
You have a time machine? What's future MAGWest like?
>>9510603
I meant to say I've been to the big one in DC. West isn't going come anywhere close to matching the big one.
