How many old costumes do you have lying around?
Let's define "old" as "worn before, and have no firm plans to wear again." How old are most of them, and/or how old is the oldest? How much room do they take up? Why do you hold on to some and not others?

I don't cosplay often but I have one cheap sailor moon costume that was last worn about 3 years ago, it's hanging up with my normal clothes so sometimes i just forget it's there (I lost the accessories and I used my own hair at the time so no wig, like any professional would of course)
I might sell it eventually, it's just not high priority.

I have a lot of old cosplays laying around that I'd never wear again, including a number of Homestuck cosplays from 2012/2013. They take up quite a bit of room, idk why I still have them.
I guess I ought to salvage what I can from them and throw the rest out one of these days.

update: i decided to take a look at it, back bow was missing and front bow was kinda fucked with pic related being a sticker and falling off, decided to just throw it out
i have so many omg, mostly homestuck but a few I never even wore and just got from a pal who wanted them off their hands. i dont think ill ever throw them out because the idea of my grandkids finding homestuck cosplay in an old box in the attic is hilarious
I still have a few cosplays that are 6/5 years old just hanging in my closet because I simply keep thinking i can just re-use some of the fabrics one day but in truth, it kinda hurts me to destroy any piece of clothes/costume so idk when that'll be. Nobody wants to buy those either because they're poorly made.
Others that are like 3 years old and slightly better I'm either selling off a few because I lost interest in the series (fucking finally got rid of my SnK garbage after almost 2 years not touching it, I dropped the manga for good and I wanted to get rid of anything related to it) or keeping then if they have some sort of sentimental value and/or I still would like to remake/modify them.
I ended up buying a clothes rack just for them, they occupy a fair bit of space.
Should probably throw out/give away some stuff but I have this terrible mentality that ONE DAY I'll use x and y for something so I cannot get rid of them. Having done a cosplay which I only spent 4€ total because I already had almost everything from my "hoarding" doesn't really help me getting rid of anything.
Oldest I still hold onto (sort of, most pieces are gone/fell apart and got trashed) would be my first cosplay, from early 2009. It's pretty much just one piece of the costume and the prop but I keep it for sentimental value.
Too damn many. I have about 2-3 I'll never wear again and 1 that kinda requires a group so I haven't worn it in awhile. 1 definitely needs to be sold since it simply doesn't fit me but... memories.
donate your old cosplays to Goodwill. make some impoverished weeb's dreams of being sailor moon or naruto come true!
love,
an ex-impoverished weeb who used to scrounge together cosplays at the thrift store

>I have this terrible mentality that ONE DAY I'll use x and y for something so I cannot get rid of them
I have this feel REALLY bad, but I have somehow forced myself to get rid of old stuff, I like having as much space as I can in my room/closet so it hurts to throw stuff out but also to keep them...
I try to have this mentality
>if i decide to make a new cosplay then its time to get rid of an old one
>if i havent worn it in two years it's time to throw it out
However I have also had these moments;
>making new cosplay
>"oh! that one thing from my old cosplay would fit this new cosplay perfectly!"
>threw out cosplay and props with it months ago
Pic related is the ONE cosplay that I refuse to throw out, because wearing it isn't such a pain, and I still really like the character, I keep it as a last resort if I don't plan to wear anything new and I want a relaxing con day. I think this year is it's 4th birthday when ax comes to
I have tons of cosplay shit sitting around, some completed, some not, none good enough to be sold imo. So they're all just scrap. I have brand new, unused wigs that are nice and everything at least I could sell those.
Still I feel bad because I'm a chronic not-finisher. I have lots of components for partially done costuems I just kind of lost steam for. I think I'm convinced I'll finish them one day.
I have a trunk full of old costumes. Some because I'm proud of them, and a few because when I have kids they could use them for dress up. Though really I should toss most of them since they're not really something a kid would play make believe in.

i have a heap of stuff that i have tried to sell before even at super bargain prices but because the anime is so old now no-one wants it. its annoying when its big things like my fight club mako where its nice enough that i couldn't throw it out but it also takes up heaps of space???

I know a lot of people resell their costumes. And I have big fuckin ballgowns that are hard to store, so I'd like to. But, uh, awk talk, a lot of Americans are large nowadays and I am not only quite thin, but quite short. I try to sell them, get a lot of interest, and then ppl ask for the measurements and instantly drop.
I should really just get rid of the ones that are hard to store but man when you spend a lot of time working on it it's hard to just let go.

Oh hey I've been interested in fight club!Mako. If the quality is good enough, maybe I can take it off your hands (or at least parts of it/the school uniform)? Drop your email if you're interested, Anon.
The oldest full cosplay I still have is my Sakura costume, from 2006. It's far too small for me now, but it was the first costume I made that I was really proud of. I also have the skirt from my Nami costume from 2004, that I last wore in probably 2008 or so. They don't take up much room, I guess I just keep them around for nostalgia's sake.

I've started selling the old ones that I don't care to wear anymore. I see no point in holding on to them, especially when I want to focus on newer cosplays and won't be wearing them any time soon.
Some I've just tossed because they're bad and nobody else should have to suffer
I've used old cosplay outfits as templates and try to recycle parts from props and scraps from fabric. But if they don't sell or i feel like its past its prime and I can't recycle it, I throw it out/give it away.
Obviously the ones I worked hard on will have sentimental value but I wont have space for it if I want to make new cosplays. Kind of like the Konmari method, I'll just have to be content with the memories/photos of the cosplay.
I only hang into those that actually fit my standards. After 10 years of cosplay this has shifted dramatically. A lot of old ones were recently ripped up to save the fabric for mockups and othe tidbits. It's weird seeing all my old craftsmanship cause it was not pretty. I still have my first costume though because I plan to remail it completely someday and want to be able to make side by side comparisons.
Too fucking many. I could probably sell Aqua, but others that are hand made from earlier times might be harder. Also need to get selling some wigs.

Don't romanticise your trash anon
I have a guest room closet that I use for all my costume storage. It's only been a hassle once or twice.
Props are displayed on top and around my entertainment center in the living room as decor. It's like weird art I guess?
Haven't thrown much away, because we rewear a lot of our costumes until they fall apart, then they go into the scrap bin for future cosplay. Definitely have reused foam and fabric for other costumes.
The costume work area, fabric storage, supply storage and the closet all get sorted through every 6 months or so to make sure everything is organized and still viable.
