Masculine jfashion thread for all the gulls with dudelier tastes. Your gender does not matter, as long as you are interested in masculine Japanese street aesthetics.

I will dump some scans of Rock and Visual jfash from old KERA Boys to start. These aesthetics are based off of Japanese music scenes, and they have a lot of overlap, but Rock is usually more funky and Visual is usually more dramatic.

>Did you know?
Men's Closet Child exists. m--closetchild.jp. Regular Closet Child is still better if you are interested in Gothic and Lolita fashion, but for less flashy styles try this store.

>Protip for the actual dudes: Being male is not the same as being new to fashion and skincare and makeup.
Never use your gender as an excuse for ignorance or as a way to explain why you don't know something. Especially on /cgl/. Currently, it is popular for male street fashionistas in Japan to wear cute or pretty makeup and hair, and you can too! You do not need to mention being male in any /cgl/ thread you are asking for help in because women have the same problems, including total inexperience, tallness, wide shoulders, basically anything except dealing with beard shadow and testicles. So focus on the actual problem when you ask for help, because you will get better advice than if you just vaguely say you need help because you are a man.

I vaguely remember seeing something on tv that I think was fashion related but I'm not sure because I don't speak moon, it was an idol from JE doing the nails of another guy, does anyone know what show it was? That JE guy dressed fun, maybe I can find it with english subtitles. It was quite short btw.

there is overlap between gothic x mode and things like ouji; in fact, some Atelier Boz ads call their items "mode gothic"

GOTHIC MODE style

definitive brand: used to be Black Peace Now

this style is basic enough for beginners to get into before making the leap into something more dramatic, like visual kei or even ouji. it is easy to emulate with western brands, but due to uncreative designs and boxy cuts common to western menswear, if you can fit into and afford brands like Midas or Gadget Grow go for those.

otherwise, Harajuku rock style is easily thriftable and you can focus on cultivating a unique hair style instead of worrying about burando dollars.

with soft makeup and hair, many street fashion men are moving toward a "genderless" aesthetic. this is not a set style, or an issue of gender identity. it is an attitude that is expressed via fashion.

all right so, here are some outfits that i think could be replicated with the sort of things you find in thrift stores. i will focus first on cool things you can do with a graphic tee. mostly these are punk/rock style.

graphic tees are usually cheap and you can often find weird or ironic shit among them. band tees are also great.

not only are graphic tees cheap, they are colorful. color coordination is a major part of jfash and a graphic tee gives you a lot more to work with--in theme as well as color! they are prints for poorgulls.

woven tees will help maintain a boxy shape. knit tees will either cling more to your body, for a fitted look ("athletic fit" they are sometimes called), or they will hang off your shoulders and give a drapey look (especially if you go up a couple sizes). women's tees are almost always fitted in some way, or have a flared waist that would emphasize hips, while boys and mens usually hang straight even when fitted. pick whatever suits your needs.

Akira gets a lot of this simple 3-color tee. it is oversized too, which gives space between the collar and her choker. red shoes, a snapback with a black white and red pattern, and black and white patterned accessories bring the colors through the rest of the coord

on the left Oni has a pseudo-ouji look. it looks like the tee is a false layered-look one, but layering a shorter-sleeved (or just shorter, or wider in the neck) graphic tee over a solid tee in one of the graphic one's secondary colors helps balance out a coord that uses that secondary color a lot (in this case, black). you can usually find suspenders cheaply.

also, if you find a good pair of knee-length shorts that are not too wide at the hem, you can do a LOT of pseudo-ouji looks. you could even shorten a pair of slim(mish) pants or jeans if you cannot find shorts of the right length that are more narrow at the hem. if you can't sew a straight line, shortening pants and folding up the "hem" can hide that.

another mostly-black coord on the left. shoelaces are easy to find in many colors, so you can swap them out to coordinate with your accessories or the tee.

on the far right is an unworn combo of a graphic tee and a brightly colored pair of pants that matches one of the tee's secondary colors. for a pop-kei look, if you can find bright colored pants in a color you like, you can look for tops that have that color as an accent color and make a mini-wardrobe around it.

a blazer over a tee is good for a casual visual/rock look.

for styles like visual or gothic, hair and makeup can be more important than the clothes. with hair and face like Mia's in this pic, just about any outfit would have a visual kei feel. the jewelry helps also. nothing he is wearing is particularly "jfash," the way pumpkin pants or long gilets or asymmetric jackets might be. clothes that fit well + good hair >>>> brand with a wig.

on the right, a super simple look with straightened hair and visual makeup illustrates how offbrand can still make a decent visual coord. here, the tee is fitted, the pants are fitted, the shoes are narrow; a silhouette like this looks great even when the clothes are simple. the jewelry is similar to Mia's, with a thin chain necklace and chunky rings.

you will probably look emo in this kind of look so beware of that

here there are two coords. one on right works the colors of the graphic tee into the windbreaker, shoes, and glasses. since those are so bright, black shorts (the main color of the tee) helps keep the coordination balanced. this is a good pop/oshare kind of coord ("sporty" is the adjective used for it though).

on the left, there are those rolled-up hems i mentioned earlier. this is "british kids style"; i have not been into the nanchatte/prep threads recently, but faux school uniforms are popular across lots of different fashion styles. this seems general preppy, but you can also use the blazer+breeches formula for other school styles: clashing punk patterns, spookycute pop-goth motifs, etc. for a casual school look, a graphic tee under an open button-down would give you lots more color coordination options than just a buttoned-up look like this one.

also since hair is vital for visual coords especially, here is a tutorial i have not seen posted before. look how flat Oni's hair is before the styling

the quality of the pic is not great, but youtube is a better place to look for hair tutorials imo. you want to learn to give volume and depth mostly; a lot of jfash hair for unisex or masculine looks has this pieced, layered, volumous look.

i would save that for a different thread, like /ouG/ or even a thread that is a dedicated image dump for casual ouji inspo (the way casual lolita threads happen). there is a lot of material there, and we are 25 pics away from image cap.

however, the sort of thriftable pseudo-ouji stuff could be considered a type of casual ouji. back in the day it was what a lot of people wore when brand was scarce in the West. you can imitate the ouji feeling, though the cuts will not be right and may be considered nouji if you tag it as ouji. but the outfits can still look good and you do not brand to accomplish the look.

one thing to think of is, how much do i look like an anime character? pic related could have stepped out of a CLAMP manga. imagining the coord as something from anime or japanese games can help keep from crossing into /fa/ territory.

in pic related, the haircut, color coordination, and ribbon bowtie lend a pseudo-ouji look to a thriftable outfit.

you can also do "ouji a la mode," using offbrand with cheaper brand items such as socks or a useful brand item like a bag, as in this pic. some might call it ouji and some might not, it's borderline and would depend on the crowd.
>>
>>9479777
shorts, dress shirt, blazer, hat, clean face, groomed hair, nice shoes, some type of necktie = close enough to ouji that many will not care

the trouble is when you subtract too many elements, it stops resembling jfash and enters the realm of dandy or teddyboy. usually, a Harajuku style haircut and color balance throughout the coord will distinguish the outfit from western versions. pic related doesn't fit the criteria for jfash in my opinion, but wouldn't be kicked out of most meetups.

The hairstyling isn't that bad with some practice, but yeah I agree it's WAAAAAY easier to do gyaruo/host offbrand compared to other j-fashions. Aside from the aesthetic, the practicality of shopping for it is a really big reason why I've been able to get so into it.

TIP!

in addition to m-closetchild.jp, maidenclothing.net is a fairly-priced second hand alternative fashion shop that carries masculine street fashion brands and has an established method for selling overseas. items from brands like Midas or Mint Neko tend to run cheaper there than the lolita items they carry. they also carry the higher priced items from jewelry brands like Deal Design or Justin Davis (higher relative to other street fashion jewelry, not precious metals & luxury watches, etc.).

if you like Japanese street/Harajuku brands, keep maidenclothing bookmarked

suggested items for a starter masculine kawaii jfash coord:

>well-fitting denim or similarly sturdy pants in a neutral color
>gaucho pants (half-pants with wider legs, key for the oversized/square silhouette) or cargo shorts in a color of your choice
>colorful, patterned socks
>solid t shirts, at least two, in a color that complements the socks (can tie your coord together and give it balance even if the rest of the look is generic)
>a graphic tee (bonus if the graphic has the color of one of your pants in it)
>a button-down shirt one size up from what you usually wear (for the boyish square), within the color scheme/motif you are establishing (take cues from how sweet lolitas build their wardrobes in terms of color and theme)
>a sweatshirt or parka in a key color or unique pattern
>shoelaces within the same color scheme (your shoes will come with a neutral color set, so pick 1 or 2 more fun ones; maybe one in a key color and one with a pattern or motif you like)

when beginning, it is tempting to grab everything you can afford that looks cool. but what can happen then is you have cool things that do not match, or a lot of one item and none of another. for every "cool" or unique item you acquire, you should have more than one way of wearing it. organizing around a unified color scheme or a kind of motif can help.

keep an eye out for accessories like watches, phone cases, rings, bags, and hats that fit your chosen scheme to work into your wardrobe over time.

and learn to make your hair do weird shit

Ooooh wow the prices are good. The only thing I don't like in comparison to Closet Child is that the small amount of mens items are mixed in with the tons of lolita.

yeah, it takes hunting to find things but i've gotten some good deals.

found a cool Japanese instagrammer who helpfully labels his coords in English (including "rude style" which i do not understand yet). coord shots are usually full body with nice composition and clarity. he is on the slightly /fa/ side of street fashion but i am hoping to learn some things. check @kodudo0624

another is @mutayasuhide who seems to be a hairdresser and i dig pic related, how the pink around his shoulders is repeated in the shoes

Asking here for help because I don't want to shit up the board with a new thread

Is there a thread I can go to for more masculine cosplays? I've been wanting to get into the scene for a while but don't know where to start. I've read through some of the stuff in the sticky, but it's missing some stuff I have questions for

if there isn't a cosplay help thread, you can start one, and ask your questions there. or you could make a QTDDTOT thread and ask there.

not my area of expertise, but how old is oldschool for yankee?

I thought about the 80s, it's older I think, but when today's gangs dress up in the clothes of former members it's usually from the 80s

'Rude style' is in reference to the Jamaican rude boy subculture. It was a thing in the UK during the late 70's and thus has a subset of fans in Japan much like punk and skinhead culture. The most contemporary Japanese brand I can think of off the top of my head that borrows from the rude boy subculture is Wacko Maria

thanks for the explanation! that is a pretty cool origin

Any recommendations of currently in print magazines geared primarily towards mens j-fashion aside from just Mens Knuckle? Any style is fine, as long as it's more male focused. It's tedious scrounging through mostly female focused magazines like Kera and GLB and thus ultimately not really worth it for me to purchase them.

Men's Spider and Men's Nonno are the best i have found, but they lack the variety of something like KERA. it is unfortunate KERA Boys did not last long.

Spider is sort of edgy street fashion, lots of visual host. Nonno is more "soft"/fa-ish street fashion.
