ITT: Things that people used to say you couldn't do/wear in lolita but nobody cares anymore.
I'll start:
>never show your shoulders
>don't use shiny shoes
>don't use shiny fabric/transparent fabric
>wear skirts always at the knee, never under or above
etc
>>
>>9443965
All those things are still wrong.
>Itas everywhere
>>
>Never show your shoulders

On what planet have people stopped caring about this?
>>
>>9443965
I still care about all of those things
Except shiny shoes, never heard about that
>>
>>9443965
people still care about showing shoulders unless the coord is exceptionally springy/summery and the person wearing it pulls it off without missing a beat

people still care about shiny fabrics, have you not seen all the people complaining the shiny fabric in recent Baby/AATP releases?
>>
>>9443965
People used to throw a big bitchfit about legwear a lot. Socks must be at least knee high, solid tights are ita, etc etc. Now I see solid tights and ankle socks pretty frequently and nobody seems to care.

I don't think going completely sock-less will ever be acceptable, though.
>>
>>9443979
Ankle socks are a blessing, I can't imagine wearing full tights in the dead of summer where I live.

I'm personally glad that natural hair is becoming more accepted, given that it's well maintained and styled.
>>
>>9443965
The big one for me is chiffon. So much "use high-quality cotton for blouses, never anything sheer" carried on even after the oldschool era had ended. I got into lolita in 2013 and had been reading so many old intro to lolita guides that I was genuinely taken aback by all the sheer blouses around.
>>
>>9443969
did you see op's pic or are you blind? even brands are doing it now.
>>
>>9443986
It's always been, that only changed for a while after the huge OTT sweet hit and everyone was under the impression that they were a must after that
Anyone that wears lolita frequently will tell you how ridiculous it is to expect someone to wear a wig every time

What I find ironic about all the girls that freak out about sholders and knees is that a good portion of them also scream about "slut shaming" and use it to justify how they suck dick for brand. I'm not joking. the vast majority of the girls going on about how modesty is an essential part of lolita are legit whores. It's such a superficial hipster fashion, it truly stands for nothing.

Here are some "rules" about lolita from Gothic Lolita Bible.

-Eye sight-
~ keep your eye site straight forward. keep looking far away then your posture will get better also.
-Facial Expressions-
~smile, smile. you always have to have some margin for yourself to breath. Because if you don't have some kind of emotional margin for yourself and have a angry face on all the time, people will not approach you and would think of you in a negative way. Never lose your smile because that is the heart of the Lolita.
-The way you walk . Posture-
~Finger Tips, Tips of your Foot, and you knees, alway together. and do not stop applying muscle strenghth to them because if you loosen your strenghth, when you sit down, the posture will not look beautiful. Do not cross your legs. When you are walking, keep your back straight, and pretend you are walking with your hip, that will make it look elegant.
-Greetings-
~You Bow then you stop. for a split second, make an eye contact then say, "Ohayou Gozaimasu (Good Morning)", or "Gokigenyou (more formal version of Hello)" , then Bow Again. Always stop, that is the way of the Lolita. When you bow, the head should be at a angle best between 45 degrees and 60 degrees.
-Presents and Thank You Gifts-
~Always have good stock of Ribbons. Whatever you are giving, put a ribbon on it. If it is a gift on a special occassion, then you should put a dried-corsage (sorry can't spell right) and a small card as the Lolita way.
The Present should be something with your heart put into, and a elegant item is the basics. That doesn't mean it just has to be expensive. Elegant items could even be something small like a Handkerchiefs. It may become something that will be important to the gift receiver. you are a true lolita by giving a gift that could become a TPO ( I don't know what that means. just says TPO)

54KB, 305x309px
-Artistic Appreciation-
~Opera, Orchestra, Ballet, Painting, etc. Aritocrates and Lolitas much always have a deep concern in the artistic field. At Ordinary times, you must train your eye to be come the "Seeing Eye". We recommend you train your eye to become the "seeing Eye". On page 96-97 are the recommended CDs. Please use as a referrence.
-Drinks-
~Enjoy your chatting time with a cup of tea/herbal tea. If you are drinking alchohol, please be aware of the following. In Japan, the average teen is not allowed to take in alchohol until the age of 20 years old. Please make a connection with alchohol after 20 years old. Beer is a peasant's Drink. Basics are Wine, and Champaign. Especially Aristocrates should be drinking Whiskey, Brandy. Also, you must drinking in a smart manner. Don't let the alchohol take advantage of you. Table manners are on pages 92-93.
-Dance-
For Aristocrates and Lolitas, this is a must. you will not be able to attend a party if you do not know how to dance. There are two genres of dancing, "Modern" and "Latin" <- the rest explains how to dance the two genres.>

-Party Knowledge-
1. Always attend the parties as a couple. This is your chance to find the handsome prince.
2. Parties are the place for Socialization. Always have the knowledge of yourself, and your home country to talk about. Be ready.
3. If you are Invited to a Home Party, always bring a gift.
4. Always the way of the concept on the party.
-How to Dress-
From Morning to 6 PM - Silk Dress or a seperated suit with pearl, or sea-coral accesorries, If it is a graden party, a Hat with a really big brim. The Males: in the Morning -dark suits and a silk hat. (top hat)
6PM to Midnight - Females: Evening Dress, Cocktail dress, with Diamonds, Emerald, or Opal Accessory. To a Cocktail party, Never wear a long dress, and wear a hat with no brim or small brim. For a Evening Party, you will not wear a hat. Males: Teel Coat and and a Dinner Jacket with a Opera Hat.

-Wording-
the THREE MAIN RULES OF LOLITA WORDS
1. Speak slowly and politely.
2. You may not use shortened/abbreviated words.
3. Be Elegant and don't be rude.

Why don't Western lolitas follow any of these rules? You're all ita posers. You only appropriate the fashion because it's "pretty" with a complete disregard for what it originally stood for.
>>
>>9444324

-Animal themed accessories are much more accepted, especially cat or bunny ears if they are cute. I think this is because every "ita" lolita back then wore a poorly made JSK with rashel lace and some form of cat ears.

From the handbook
>Don't wear cat ears for the sake of cat ears. You might have a cat themed loli outfit for halloween or perhaps you bought a lolita jacket with cat ears, but don't just stick some on for no reason. It will make your outfit look like a costume. The same goes for wings and any other non-clothing item you might add to a costume.

-Long skirts. The Lolita handbook even explicitly frowns upon shin length skirts but now they're common, with some girls buying underskirts to make their dresses longer.

-Heavier makeup and false eyelashes, though this was never that strict of a rule, even early GLB tutorials feature heavy makeup for gothic looks. Now sweet makeup can be just as heavy.

that doesn't mean that they are whores. to support women who choose to do porn or prostitution is one of the most debated things within the feminist movement.
>>
>>9443968
I'm gonna get ahead and side with the major Japanese brands on issues pertaining to what is Lolita over random western anons still living in 2007.
>>
>>9444037
There's a difference between making the occasional atrocity and something being a normal part of their advertising.

Tell me, if the major brands having blouseless girls appear in ads on numerous occasions over the years isn't enough to make it "acceptable", then what exactly is it in the first place that makes them not? Because you say so? Literally nowhere outside random people in the western community is there anything to indicate it's factually wrong like a lot of people insist.
>>
Decadefag here. I think the reason why the "rules" were so strict back in the day was because there were so few resources on the fashion compared to today, so for safety's sake anything considered ita-bait (no blouse, cat ears, polka dots, fandom, steam, etc... hell some people even considered black/white ita without exception) was just treated with the attitude of "don't do it at all". Back in the day, you couldn't just come on /cgl/, start a "fandom themed coords done well" thread, and get plenty of nice inspiration. Not only were there few resources, but there were more ita as fuck ones than legit ones by a lot. So, in an effort to minimize the amount of people misrepresenting the fashion, the community went a little overboard with the "rules". Now there's so much information out there and examples of these coords done properly that most of us don't care.
>>
>>9444737
Japanese lolitas also think it's important to show very little skin. People who actually wear the fashion are more important than what brands do in an ad. That being said, I never wear a blouse in summer.
>>
>>9444766
I actually think there are less resources now.. New girls can easily buy brand and do what they see on facebook but there aren't any new translations about lolita, a lot of the resources we created back then don't get updated anymore, you don't see as many magazine scans, cgl is very focussed on AP, people used to write articles/blog posts about changes in the fashion and discuss new brands but I don't see that anymore?
>>
>>9444488
You care enough to reply lol
>>
>>9444801
It's actually less of an issue in Japan than it is here. There's lots of pictures in Japan of girls blouseless, even in the old school days and I've never seen them complain about it on any of the Japanese forums I lurk.
>>
>>9444824
Im not saying its an issue but if you look up how to wear lolita in japanese it also says you shouldn't show much skin. There are loads of pictures of westerners without blouse too, so what? Cgl will complain about anything.
>>
>>9443965
I remember when the chunky rounded shoe thing was the norm. I'm glad that the trend has changed to more elegant slighly pointy shoe styles being accepted (even for sweet lolita).

Iirc blouseless coords used to be acceptable if you coorded them with a parasol and as a summer coord. I think it was a thing in the mid 2000's. Also speaking of parasols, are they even a thing anymore? They used to be a wardrobe staple, but I barely see them anymore at all.

>>9444303
>Raschel lace.
Raschel lace is still considered bad though. But I feel like nowadays people are less crazy about lace. I remember when the only accepted options was torchon or cotton lace.
>>
>>9444857
>parasols
Might depend on where you live. It's usually very sunny and warm here, I own three parasols and never leave the house without one.

Ugh. No. Bait shoes being acceptable is the most annoying thing as of late. Stop bringing shitty trends from the 80s back. And I say that as someone who likes the 80s.
>>
>>9444535
There are standards and requirements - but not really rules. Also, sometimes rules are meant to be broken. You'll even find that very statement in some lolita FAQs.

If anyone is being immature here, it's you, buddy. With your "hurr hurr, 18+" meme. Yes. You must be of age to post here. Some of us do read the rules. Bet that's the only rule you read for the site.

>>
>>9444863
Maybe you are right. My comm doesn't do outside meets in the hot summer because it's unbearable. For the rest of the year a parasol isn't exactly needed anymore and nobody wants to carry one around just for the pictures.

>fucking sluts in my lolita

You have some serious pent up rage. You do know this site is for people 18 and older, right? Why don't you go find some girls at lunch and shit talk about sluts with them? Aren't there some pretty girls you can target at school and label as sluts in a sad attempt to make yourself feel better?
>>
>>9445649
One half of me is hoping this is a sad attempt at bait. The other half is hoping there really is some rando autist who sits around and fumes about something as inconsequential as people sleeping around.

I'm not sure whether to be interested or disgusted by the direction lolita make-up trends are going in. I don't miss the days of people saying anything other than light lipgloss was ita, but the overdrawn pouty matte lip thin that's come from Risa combined with the sad sexy eye make-up AP were doing and the new photo styling really gives the fashion a larme vibe. Again with byojaku for the sick, sad thing. Bright red lipstick and lipgloss seems to be becoming really popular too, and although it matches well with retro coords, it changes the feeling...red lipstick plus bare legs/ankle socks really screams the other Lolita to me and I always avoided it for that reason, but it seems like that nymphet vibe is mainstream AP styling now.
>>
>>9446514
I'd rather have full lips (red or pink) to "dolly" lips any day. Putting red only on the inside of your lips makes them look smaller and silly.
>even worse, heart lips
>>
>>9446514
i don't necessarily mind makeup like that but i think it's pretty hard to pull off unless you have a certain "look" about you. and byojaku rarely translates well to real life unless you already have a young-looking babyface imo. luckily, it seems like the average western lolita still prefers a sheer lip tint and a flattering normal eye makeup shape

>>9446632
were heart lips ever a real thing or was it just itas?
>>
>>9446632
Red-painted overlined full lips look slutty in the context of a lolita coord, to the point that it sometimes becomes a little creepy IMO, even if you do have babyface. Gradient lips are fine if they're not done to too extreme a level, there's nothing wrong with having small lips.

>>9446514
I'm glad people aren't acting like lipstick is ita any more, but in some coords it does look weird.
>>
>>9446632
>byojaku rarely translates well to real life unless you already have a young-looking babyface imo
I think it's mostly just hard to get it to have the right cute-but-sickly effect. At one extreme you can end up looking looking genuinely sick and tired in a bad way, or, more commonly, the high-blush look ends up looking like you're flushed from orgasm rather than flushed from sickness. My family and friends sometimes see jfash stuff over my shoulder and I've had comments about looks like pic related (which is a fairly tasteful example) seeming slutty/nympet. High blush is associated with feeling hot with arousal/embarrassment as well as youth, so it gives off weird slutty child vibes to normies (like a schoolgirl Halloween costume or something) which get worse when you mix it with a cutesy fashion like lolita.

Not trying to inflame arguments on this board with people who go that it's totes innocent and I'm reading stuff into it that isn't intended, but this is my experience of how normies react to blush-heavy looks that stray out of porcelain doll territory. Extreme example, but I just showed my bf >>9446514 and he said it looked like a blow-up doll.

Both lips look like ageplay shit, I agree.
But I see nothing wrong using a pink matte lipstic like this one.

how can lips look like ageplay shit all by themselves? is this a meme or are gulls really fetishizing the stuff that they constantly whine about being fetishized?
>>
>>9447158
they can't, people in this thread have no idea what the fuck they're talking about.
>>
How can fucking LIPS look "ageplay"?
This meme is going way too far. You guys are the perverted ones for fetishizing everything
>>
>>9447183
Fucking THIS. I'm tired of people circlejerking over how everything is "ageplay." Let's reserve that label for the actual ageplayers instead of applying it to the most inane, innocent stuff.

Ugh, yes. I'm sick of the term being thrown around at everything. Red lipstick is not "ageplay" "nymphet" etc, and if you're worried about a normie mistaking you for a fetishist find a different fashion or only wear super toned down classic looks.

And most normal people don't know what nymphet or ageplay is anyway.

On topic, I remember people being much more critical of the GLB back then, and being warned not to use it for inspiration because everything in it isn't lolita. Now it's expected that we must always look like we walked off the pages of a brand ad at all times.
>>
>>9447158
Red lips are widely associated with being a "sexy" look by normies, it's why they're not considered professional in the workplace. Blush, frills, underbust cuts etc are all considered childish. Put the two together, yeah, people find it a weird look.

>>9447417
>On topic, I remember people being much more critical of the GLB back then, and being warned not to use it for inspiration because everything in it isn't lolita. Now it's expected that we must always look like we walked off the pages of a brand ad at all times.
The early G&LBs had a lot more outright goth and punk content (as well as general ita shit like the costumes VISIBLE put out), which got more and more pushed out as lolita got more popular, punk got less popular, and the adspace went where the money was. People should still be careful about just copying the G&LB, but nearly all the stuff in there is lolita nowadays.
>>
>>9447160
it's so weird. i honestly think that people resort to calling things/people ageplay or ageplayers when they don't like something or someone. like it happened right here in this thread: "i don't like full red lips in lolita fashion. ageplay!"

print too sweet for your personal taste? must be ageplay! someone styling themselves in a way you don't like? she's an ageplayer! It's the opposite of the phenomenon that this thread is about. people can't wear 2010-ish OTT sweet or do anything cutesy without catching some shit from gulls because they're all ageplayers, right?

it's happening in other relevant communities as well, with people crying wolf and talking down to others because of the ageplay boogeyman. getting real sick of gulls projecting kink onto completely innocent things. we should be unified in our disgust towards the normies who fetishize us--not fingerpointing and namecalling at our own kind.
>>
>>9447417
>Now it's expected that we must always look like we walked off the pages of a brand ad at all times.
I think that's more because of taobao photoshoots or other things, because I'm pretty new (started wearing lolita in 2015) and none of my lolita friends actually look at GLB. When I look for articles or scans from GLB it's mostly very old stuff.
>>
>>9447467
It's nothing to do with Taobao. If anything, it's because people *stopped* reading the G&LB, which has always had street snaps with off elements or that didn't perfectly match, and started getting their coord shots through places like Tumblr, FB and Insta where OTT inevitably rises to the top because stuff that gets the most likes gets constantly re-upped.
>>
>>9444314
If anyone is a westaboo, it's gotta be Japanese lifestyle Lolita's. I'd always love reading these in the GLB because they're so over the top.

Do you have anymore, anon? I remember one specifically being about training yourself to "have an eye for art".
>>
>>9446632
god, heart lips! I am so glad that shit is over.
>>
>>9446514
I actually love lolita with larme type styling, it means I can still feel comfortable in the fashion now I've hit 30. It also gives me a way to wear sweet without feeling silly.
>>
>>9447526
I mentioned taobao because I know a bunch of girls who are quite new who discovered lolita because of tumblr blogs that just constantly post taobao photoshoots/ads for new releases. When they first joined the comm they would sometimes complain to me about anything that didn't look like a photoshoot.
>>
>>9444020
>>9444737

Brands can showcase that you can wear their clothes outside of lolita. It's not a sin to wear jsk's outside of lolita running around. Just don't post it online saying its lolita.
>>
>>9446514
I hate seeing Risa model for lolita brands, in general she screams nymphet to me.
>>
>>9447092
I had a giggle there

>>9449775
This. God do I dislike Larme/nymphet, i hope it'll be over soon
>>
>>9449775
I don't think that's Risa although it is in her style. Agree with you that Risa's pouty baby aesthetic doesn't suit lolita well, even though she's a beautiful model.
>>
>>9444910
>Pointy shoes were a thing back in the 80s
Nah, not really.
*an oldfag who was actually around in the 80's.
>>
>>9450132
Really? Maybe less so among young people but they were very common in corporate settings (as they are today).
>>
>>9444766
It's simply because normies fuck and dilute everything they touch up.
>>
>>9443979
Wait are solid tights ita? I missed that memo.

Brand socks are just too expensive.
>>
>>9450698
I usually see that comment referring to coords with bodyline main pieces where plain tights cheapen the whole look even more, OTT print dresses where they fuck up the color distribution or black/white plain tights shoehorned into coords because "black and white goes with anything"

the only way solid tights aren't ita is when they have a nice texture, don't disturb the balance of the coord and are tied in color-wise.

so yeah there's actually more ways to fuck up plain tights than to wear them correctly and that's why they get called ita i guess?
>>
>>9444314
I've found I just naturally do these things when in Lolita because it feels right. Especially the posture, politeness and bowing.
>>
>>9445500
Uuuummmmmm......
No
>>
>>9445507
OTT lolita is not the typical lolita and the only reason lolita stands out as much as it does is because everyone today dresses like a slut or a slob compared to the era these dresses are based on and the culture lolita tries to bring us back to.
>>
>>9445515
Lolita is about a certian culture not just a way of dress and that cultre of traditional ladylike politeness and modesty in not just dress but speech and attitude. You would not make poop jokes, get down on the floor to play with the dog, sit in such a way that others can see your bloomers or excessively cuss while in lolita so why would you behave like a slut or talk about such matters while in lolita. Its personal tmi material. Btw, hilarious photo with the context XD
>>
>>9450698
You're unlikely to see someone complain about black tights in a kuro coord, but people kick off every time white tights show up with a print.
>>
>>9444857
I think parasols aren't used as much any more because prints aren't as quick to ruin at the IDEA of rain.
>>
>>9450744
>everyone but us is dressed like sloots xD these...these non lolita whores
You sound like a special snowflake
>>
>>9443979
No, solid coloured and simply patterned socks used to be the norm, then everybody decided they must have overpriced tights with stupidly busy prints all over them that throw off the balance of the outfit as blouses are generally solid colours.
>>
>>9444873
>>9445425
I didn't know what bait shoes were until I googled it; I hated everything I saw but I love these Bodyline shoes and really really want them in navy and/or brown. They're cute enough to lend a bit of maturity to sweet and elegant enough to wear with sweet-classic but not overly pointy.

Have you tried normal shops like Clarks? It really depends what substyle you're into, but I have fairly narrow feet and got a pair of these lately and they're super comfy. They're supposed to be a standard width but the reviews are full of people complaining that they're narrower than normal. They're more of an oldschool/classic shoe though.

Showing your shoulders is still wrong imo because it takes away from the look. The OP pic doesn't "feel" lolita
>>

I got a pair of Oxfords in Clarks a couple weeks back (in the kids section actually, but hey Oxfords are Oxfords).
Those are cute shoes, I will go try them on. Sadly though I am super amazing at scuffing patent shoes so I will have to think carefully if they do fit.
I found a pair of ballet shoe flats with the ribbons in Dune that fit really well but I duno how people feel about those with lolita...

I've also been eyeing up these Queen Bee flats (come in 5 colours) for ages in my search for less sweet flat shoes, but I have no idea how they are for width so it could be a pricey gamble for you:
https://voi.0101.co.jp/voi/wsg/wrt-5_mcd-TO404_cpg-161_pno-38_ino-01_ocn-04.html

Bodyline RHS also run really narrow if that counts as "flat".
