I am looking for a person to commission a cosplay from in the future but I have had horrible experiences in the past from commissioners. What are your commission horror stories? Who do I definitely need to stay away from?

Everyone. Learn to sew.

this.
especially if youve constantly have bad experiences with commissioners.
that pretty much means you should just stop bothering with them and learn to sew.

you think everyone that sews is instantly good at it? no, its called practicing, you moron.
go out and buy some simple/cheap patterns.
buy some super cheap fabric and start making shit.
dont be dumb and start trying to make something complex right off the bat.

Honestly, sewing is pretty straightforward, the key to making good projects is patience and willing to go slow. There are a lot of things to be learned when you start sewing, but the more you work with the materials the better you get. Every new skill you learn is instantly added to your sewing memory bank and will be useful again. If you're new to sewing I recommend making a rectangle skirt! They're super easy and look great once they're done, not to mention that's what lolita skirts are. Circle skirts are also pretty easy, but a curved hem [the bottom of the skirt] is pretty tricky to do. Like the other anon said, get yourself some cheap fabric to begin with. I'd recommend going to your local thrift store/salvation army/goodwill and picking up some cheap fabric or bedsheets. If you don't have a sewing machine you can still learn to handsew, and that gives you far more control of how your garment will turn out, and personally I feel a little more accomplished after making a garment entirely by handsewing. Sewing machines are actually pretty cheap and in my experience more people than you know have a little Singer machine sitting somewhere collecting dust. You can also look for a Makerspace near you, they almost always have sewing machines and sometimes even sergers/overlockers for the public to use!

Or have the time for it.
Be willing to spend money if you want a good costume. High quality commissioners cost more than $200 for a full costume. News flash: you're not going to get a high quality, custom costume for the same price as China.
A person I know does commissions and joins competitions and everything looks horrible up close. I had her make me a simple dress and it fit like an ufo,and also it was way too small while she used a pattern , I have no idea how I ended up with that monstrocity. Even I could sew better than that (but had no time, so I commissioned)

Yeah, this is really what I meant. I know how to hand sew okay but I don't have a sewing machine nor do I really want to rush out and buy one. Cosplay is a fun hobby for me but I don't really have a lot of extra time (or space honestly).
I just always laugh at the whole 'just make it yourself idiot' mentality that a lot of people in the community have whenever someone asks about commissions. I've gotten most of my cosplays commissioned with little incident. You really just have to be smart, do your research, and be willing to pay for high quality work
Just don't commission from Queenie Cosplay/Moon Kingdom Boutique. She always is weeks or months late with rushed construction. She purposely waits for the date that PayPal will no longer let you dispute a transaction.

Curious do you have photos of some of your cosplays and who you comissioned?
Goddamnit girls, stop telling everyone to learn how to sew themselves. Nobody will commission those of us trying to make a living off this.
