If you're going to add Graphic-Con, which I see no indication of upgrading from a simple vendor hall with a masquerade held in an arena, you should add this list to the list:

Northern Ontario Expo

I just used the animecons.ca website to continue the list, previous thread Op wasn't me. But thanks for mentioning it, I'm sure the list is missing lots of newer/smaller/more obscure stuff.

Are the Yeticon hotel rooms sold out? I might just be really stupid and can't find where/how to book the other hotels.
>>
>>9433417
you have to book through the resort, just go to bluemountain website and see what you can find. At this point, considering the con is about 2 months away, my guess is if there are any available still, they're more than likely the houses they rent that are outside of the con area.

Last year I booked really late, because I wasn't really that concerned about going since it was a 'new con' and I ended up getting a room in a house down the street. It was about a 20 minute walk to the con.

Curious.

Have any of you on here actually managed to get laid at anime north or another convention before?

It's a nice thought, but I could never actually see this happening judging by the usual crowds at AN.

Maybe you could find a cute girl or guy that is in a huge group and you some how talk to them and exchange numbers, but the odds you have chemistry is pretty low.

Not even including the fact that they probably won't ever respond to you if you text them after the convention is over.

or maybe I just suck at being social
>>
>>9440102
Hook ups do happen at the con. But it really depends on how thirsty or autistic you are, and if you have eternal resting bitch face. If one of these applies to you and a girl senses a creepy vibe off you, you're not getting laid.
>>
>>9440124

Sadly, I have standards and don't really pursue girls unless they genuinely gage my interest.

Rumours go around so I was just curious and trying to wrap my brain around the very idea of getting laid at anime north.

Do you have any actual stories of it happening? Cause all I hear are generally rumours.
>>
>>9440152
I have one friend who's kinda chubby but is really outgoing and funny managed to hook up with a cute shy girl at AN. He also got a bj from a hot slutty girl at APop.

interesting.

Closest I've come to the sorts, is making out with a couple chicks at the dance last year but that doesn't really count considering I don't even remember what they looked like and it's the environment that type of shit happens.

hmm, upon reevaluation. Good portion of weebs and nerds are pretty desperate for some action..

alright, I'm convinced. It's still such an interesting idea though because in that sense the con, through some peoples eyes, is just a cesspool of fellow weebs trying to find a significant other or hook up.

God damn I love anime north lmao it's become such a social phenomenon

>God damn I love anime north lmao it's become such a social phenomenon

No, it hasn't. You're talking about a bunch of people in their teens and 20s taking a vacation together for a weekend where there will be partying. People are going to hookup in that situation.
>>
Seems like the novii situation is blowing over. I think most of the girls that were in his gang are fine now:

Just a reminder for those interested. We're rescheduling this meetup for Saturday April 29th, where we'll go for Japanese BBQ followed by drinks and games at Power Up Game Bar. We can meetup in front of Gyu Kaku at 5:30pm and head directly to Power Up Game Bar right after dinner.

Gyu Kaku is located on Church between Queen and King, and Power Up Game Bar is a short walk from there (5-10mins) near Church and Wellington.

>>
>>9441030
Any girls go to these? I feel like it's a sausage fest.
>>
>>9441032
A few do show up from time to time, but you're right it is mostly a sausage fest.

To be fair these meetups aren't really setup for dating or hooking up, more as a pass time in between conventions to go out, eat and explore weeb culture within the city. So far we've been to maid cafes, had crepes, ate at various ramen and izakaya restaurant, tried Japanese fusion, etc.
>>
>>9440684
I'm not so sure it's blowing over.

There's just only so much you can talk about in public fb status updates, etc.

If he had been posting and defending himself it'd probably be still going as a public circus.

Look at this: https://kiwifarms.net/threads/kevin-ly-novii-photography.29981/

Someone writes there that somebody is trying to press charges.
>>
>>9441129
Wtf is kiwifarms?

Half the people in Facebook comments wrote they were going to try to press charges and the other half were sending thinly veiled death threats from the safety of their keyboards.
Doubt either is actually going to happen, especially not with out of context, undated screencaps as the only physical proof.

Never been to a con before, is it a good place to make friends? I don't get much human interaction outside of work.
>>
>>9441342
It depends on the con. Mid-size cons are the best for this. Too small and everyone knows each other so it can be clique-y, too big and everyone just sticks to their own friends.

Where are you located? How old are you? What are your interests? People here might be able to make suggestions on what cons to check out.
>>
>>9441356

AN is a good con to meet new people, as there's a little bit for everyone. Though you might be overwhelmed due to the sheer size of the con. You can try meeting new people if you attend the cgl meetup.

Yeti Con is supposed to be REALLY FUN as it's located inside a resort with various rides and attractions. You should definitely be able to meet new people here.
http://www.yeticon.org/

I've personally never attended but I've heard good things about Con Bravo located in Hamilton. People tell me it's a fun con to attend with a chill atmosphere.
http://2017.conbravo.com/

You can also check out Fanexpo in the summer. It's a big con with lots of industry and special guests. The atmosphere is more uptight and corporate, but this is the con that'll most likely feature special guests you might be interested in (Hollywood celebs, famous artists, etc).

By tomorrow you might find one or two early blooming varieties. Here's a picture from today. Just starting to open on this one tree, the rest are still closed. You could also try the trees at centennial park and center island.

>>9441499

>>
>>9441676
I'm going to go Friday actually, looks like theres rain tomorrow.
Do you think the storm will damage the trees? :(
>>
>>9441688
The wind prediction is only up to 30kph so that's not too bad. The rain can make petals fall off once they're open but most of them will probably be protected just by virtue of being closed. The real killer is cold snaps and frost.
>>

update re: blossoms, i shot at kariya today.

there is ONE cherry blossom tree low key budding in the entire park, it's not worth going for the cherry blossoms!

however i did shoot near the magnolia (i think?) trees near the front of the park, near celebration square, and in jubilee park today, and theyre very pretty! the flowers are bigger than cherry blossoms so they photograph nicely although arguably not the same effect if you want cherry blossoms. however, i had a good time because iirc during bloom season the parks are always super crowded? near the blossoming trees at the front there was no one there and we got some nice shots.

was hecking cold and windy tho, but the wind was a free dress/cape thrower so hey, i'll take it.

One of our regulars informed me that Pink City is hosting an event at Power Up Game Bar the night we intend to do our meetup. Which will probably mean the bar will be closed to set up for the event.
https://www.fb.com/events/805756562914067/

So right now we have two options:
1) Push the dinner at Gyu Kaku to 7:00pm followed by checking out the Pink City event at Power Up Game Bar (event starts at 10pm)

2) Go to a different restaurant and venue afterwards. I was thinking of checking out Mr. Tonkatsu followed by Tilt. Both establishments are located near Bathurst and Bloor.

Yeah, the last couple days of cloud and rain slowed them down. :( Seems like this weekend Queen's park is the place to be from this twitter photo. I'm going to check that out tomorrow and maybe center island too.

In the last couple of years I have noticed Kariya tends to bloom after high park (I guess it's a bit farther north) so if you're not away from TO too long you might catch some of the peak there or in York U.

Anime North made more money per person ($50,000 more alone by not giving $10 off for the first 5000 tickets).

It might look like a stupid move, but they will still sell out and will make more money. It may have taken longer, but that's not indication that this strategy has failed.

Costume Con was a different experience. It's pretty small, maybe around the size of Anime Shogatsu but spread out in a much larger hotel space with much wider hallways. Being way out on the outer edge of a suburb town didn't help attendance I'm sure. The programming is all focused on costume-making, naturally, but I did take in a panel on historical 18th century fashion that was really interesting. Vendor room was about the same size as shogatsu but only selling props, jewellery and costume parts. The crowd that was there was almost all in cosplay, and tons of elaborate and high quality ones. Mix of scifi, fantasy, historical reproductions, comic book, vidya, and original designs. A handful of anime costumes. Another thing of note was a lot of over-40 cosplayers, even 60+ with some very well made outfits. Quite a few francophones too.

The main event on Saturday is the masquerade. No dance or evening/overnight programming. Like the costumes, the skits were also well done and rehearsed, with some genuinely funny jokes.

The only blemish was a pair of wet blankets in the masquerade audience going "creeper" or "he's making everyone unsafe" or "UGH" or "SIIIIIIGH" whenever the MC threw in some banter about the sexier costumes. Everyone else, male and female, were cheering him on.

Kiwifarms is a board dedicated to lolcows. If you're familiar with Pretty Ugly Little Liars, it's like that, only it goes beyond just the cosplay scene.

It's a pretty shitty place because it's full of rampant doxxing and snitching on semi-deserving people, but it's also an awesome place because people suffering internet bullying at the hands of certain untouchably powerful internet personalities (especially the SJW types who've found they can get away with anything) have been able to go there, band together, and fight back.

They're the ones who unmasked Shmorky's pedophillia and harassment, for example. They took down Vade, possibly the worst person to ever disgrace the internet.

I went one year, and the people running it seemed so far up their own asses, as if they were the first people to ever run a convention. I stopped volunteering when I heard how the cunt in charge of the costume contest for the last few years (I think her name is Maddy) changed the rules so that crappy thrown together costumes had a better chance of winning the contests. Surprise surprise she always wears one. I know I am sure as hell not going anymore.

Lottery is the best method for sure. If you wanted to base it off of skill, it would be completely subjective and would lead to organizers taking bribes or only selecting from their in-groups largely.

I'm going to my first con in Canada, it's also my first con out of my third world country and I have a few questions and I was wondering if anyone could answer a few!

>What do you consider to be something unique to canadian cons that I shouldn't miss?
>Which characters are popular in Canada? Should I expect to see many cosplayers of them?
>Is there any etiquete rule I should remember?
>How are panels there?
>Are cons in Canada like the ones in the US (I've read a lot about those, if they aren't then can you explain what are the major differences?)
>I'm visiting a place where people speak french and english, I'm learning a bit of french, but should I expect con goes to speak mostly english or french?
>Is it easy to make friends at the con? Or should I keep to myself?
>What are the rules when asking for someone's picture? Other than being polite and not touching them.

Thanks in advance!
>>
>>9454851
>>What do you consider to be something unique to canadian cons that I shouldn't miss?
I don't know if there's much that's "unique" to Canada cons because there's so much overlap with US cons. Maybe the pro wrestling at AN but I wouldn't call that a must-see. Otakuthon might have some unique stuff but I haven't been there. If you want unique to North America, Anime Hell and Totally Lame Anime are usually fun.
The Anime North maid cafe is one of the better con cafes, cute maids and good performances.
>>Which characters are popular in Canada? Should I expect to see many cosplayers of them?
Love Live, Attack on Titan, Overwatch, Undertale, Pokemon are some of the bigger ones. There's also a lot of flavor of the month characters, like this year Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid and Yuri On Ice.
>>Is there any etiquete rule I should remember?
Hold the doors open for the person behind you. If you bump into someone, always say "sorry" even if it's their fault. Don't spit on the sidewalk. Cars follow the traffic laws a lot more than in 3rd world countries so use the traffic lights and pedestrian crossings to cross streets. When you shake hands use a firm grip. Don't do cheek kiss as greeting unless you're very familiar with the person.
>>How are panels there?
Mixed bag. A lot (the ones with just a series name as the title) are just a group of teenagers just going "we like this show, you like this show too!". A few are are funny or interesting, like Anime Hell, or some of the actual lectures on cultural stuff. QA panels with Japanese artists and voice actors are usually good.
>>Are cons in Canada like the ones in the US
Haven't been to the US so don't know.
>>
>>9454967 (continued)
>>I'm visiting a place where people speak french and english, I'm learning a bit of french, but should I expect con goes to speak mostly english or french?
Most people will be bilingual in the french speaking areas but I think they appreciate if you know at least a couple of phrases in french.
>>Is it easy to make friends at the con? Or should I keep to myself?
It's not hard if you're outgoing and not a sperglord. Being in cosplay yourself helps a ton to make friends.
>>What are the rules when asking for someone's picture? Other than being polite and not touching them.
Don't ask for a picture in the middle of a hallway where people are walking. If you ask to be in the picture with them, don't hoverhand (pretending to put your arm around their shoulder/waist without physically touching). If they give you a cosplay card with their social media pages, it's nice to send them the picture after the con.
>>
>>9454851
Which convention?
>>
>>9432485
>What do you consider to be something unique to canadian cons that I shouldn't miss?
There's a lot of overlap with American cons.
>Which characters are popular in Canada? Should I expect to see many cosplayers of them?
Reboot's way more popular here, there's usually at least one or two Reboot cosplayers if not a whole group of them despite the show having been over for years. Otherwise it's a pretty mixed bag, so far I've seen lots of Star Wars cosplayers this year.
>Is there any etiquette rule I should remember?
Hold the door for people, apologize when bumping into people. Be polite, like anon above said don't spit.
>How are panels there?
I don't really go to panels so I can't say.
>Are cons in Canada like the ones in the US (I've read a lot about those, if they aren't then can you explain what are the major differences?)
Cons in Canada are mostly smaller.
>I'm visiting a place where people speak french and english, I'm learning a bit of french, but should I expect con goes to speak mostly english or french?
This varies. If you're going to Montreal most people speak both. If you're going to Quebec City a lot more people are going to speak French.
>Is it easy to make friends at the con? Or should I keep to myself?
>What are the rules when asking for someone's picture? Other than being polite and not touching them.
Don't ask when people are eating food. Otherwise just be polite. Touching is usually okay and less awkward than hovering as long as you're not a creep and don't touch anywhere inappropriate and your hands aren't dirty.

>>
>>9455394
MCC I've only been once and I'm from Montreal but it's not that great. It's mainly for dropping cash on meeting industry guests and in the vendors hall, rather than going to panels and meeting fans of similar series. There's a LOT of normies because of the attraction of the big names so the cosplay scene is very weak. You're going to see a lot of party city Superman costumes and stuff but cosplayers are still way outnumbered. Montreal is very much bilingual, you'll be fine with just English. Some francophones can get really snobby about language but that doesn't happen much at cons since they know lots of outsiders are coming in. If you're female and going solo you might get a lot of "Ugh girls can't be real comic fans" from vendors, which happened to my friend a bunch when she was trying to buy things like dudes.. do you not want money.

This is just my experience in comparison to other Canadian cons, take my words with a grain of salt.

I went there yesterday. The two magnolias(?) in front have lost most of their petals. The one white flower tree in the back is peeled but the fallen petals make a nice carpet on the ground around it. The weeping type cherry trees around the ponds and in front are all in full bloom. The bigger trees in the center path of the park and the main row of trees in front are close to opening, Some might pop by wednesday or next weekend. I wanna get a picture of the main group in the center path once their petals start dropping. Last time there was a good bloom it covered all the ground in pink.

>What do you consider to be something unique to canadian cons that I shouldn't miss?
Nothing, really. Every con has something special (hopefully) so I wouldn't really generalize it by country. That's a bit too high-level. Learn about the cons individually. Some are standard like Anime North and Otakuthon (has problems but is mostly a good time), some are fucking DO NOT WANT like Kitchener Comic Con or FanWorld Niagara (srsly, avoid), some are niche but well-run like ConBravo or the now sadly gone Con-G and APop, and some are boring corporate shows like FanExpo (I realize I'm only speaking to Ontario here)

>Which characters are popular in Canada? Should I expect to see many cosplayers of them?
Mostly the same as in the USA, but with occasionally more Canadian content like Reboot. Shows from the 90s also hang on longer b/c we didn't have Cartoon Network so YTV reruns were big.

>Is there any etiquette rule I should remember?
"No worries" has become standard for "no problem" if you're in Toronto/Montreal/etc.

>How are panels there?
Depends on the con.

>Are cons in Canada like the ones in the US
Mostly, yeah. Smaller pop means our cons are smaller in scale, but we still get some whoppers. AN is 35k on paper but more like 60k show up and party.

>I'm visiting a place where people speak french and english, I'm learning a bit of french, but should I expect con goes to speak mostly english or french?
Almost everyone speaks English. Quebec City might give you some trouble as well, but it's not nearly as bad as you might think esp if you say you're an American.

>Is it easy to make friends at the con? Or should I keep to myself?
Depends on you. We're as friendly as any population but you gotta reach out. Go to meetups, group photoshoots, etc.

>What are the rules when asking for someone's picture? Other than being polite and not touching them.
Always ask, don't do creepshots or say creepy things, and don't act like an entitled asshole if they say no.

So update on Cosplay Matsuri, looks like it's gonna be completely separate from the Science Center itself, which explains both why they're even being allowed after everything with APop last year, and how they're able to charge such low ticket prices. A little disappointed, and curious as to which areas we do get then, if the entire museum is off-limits...They seem to have confirmed an AA section of some sort too, so hopefully they actually have room for the stuff they're promising?

Ad astra as far as i know is a tiny little lit-centric thing up in Richmond Hilll (ttc inaccessible unless you take viva buses and/or yrt) with local genre authors as guests of honor and a bunch of book readings/releases. TCAF's the only really good comic game in town. It's later this month.

If you like webcomics and animation, go out to ConBravo in July. It's like an hour outside of TO in Hamilton and has a lot of panels and great artists.
>>
>>9460342
Graphic-con is run by the public library. It's a really piss-poor excuse for a con. It's a glorified vendors hall. They haven't expanded or actually built anything, but their advertising of it.

They moved to an arena last year and had no place to put the handful of panels so they put it in the horrible sounding arena. The photo show the entire con......THAT WAS IT.

I dont expect big guest or any comic-con level shit, but is it really that much to ask for some photoshoot, panel rooms and I dunno some sort of thing that looks like a con.
>>
>>9460342
I'm the OP of previous thread before this one, the list here is mostly from animecons.ca with some Toronto local events added because that's where I am and some google searches for "convention [province/city name]". It's probably missing a ton of comic cons, gaming cons, and smaller anime cons. Hey if you know an event that's not on the list, go ahead and link it here or post it to animecons.ca!

>the Next Music from Tokyo concerts the week before AN. Maybe we could do a small meet before the show and then head over to it?

Great idea anon. We could do a meetup for the Saturday show. The show is located at Lee's Palace near Bathurst and Bloor and starts at 9:00pm but doors open at 8:00pm.

We can either meet before the show, have dinner and go to the show together or just straight meetup at the show.

http://www.leespalace.com/event/1452201-next-music-from-tokyo-vol-10-toronto/
>>
>>9465797
I would be down for that. If we want to do dinner we could meet at 6 or 7. There's a ton of variety nearby to choose from like Mr. Tonkatsu or Crepes a Go Go.

For something light we could meet at the Taiyaki place and eat them on the walk to Lee's.
>>
>>9463311
that's bc it's only may anon, if we listed events all the way up to september the OP would be seven pages long

Am I living on the wrong coast? Does anything ever go on in Vancouver or the Lower Mainland in general?
>>
>>9478662
Are you talking about con-wise? I find the mini events are worth going to, like SFU Summer Fest for AA and games (raffle prizes), and MiniComi for just AA.

Everything else has been a weird mishmash - AE is at a loss, AR is at a high price; neither are great. If you have to check out one of the cons, I'd recommend going one day at AR, like Saturday, unless you see some guest you want to check out on some other day.

Better save your money for Sakura Con, I hear. Or else go to the east coast, sounds like rad times over there.
>>
>>9478690
Con wise or even just anime related events. Looking through this thread it seems like the GTA has a lot of stuff going on but that could just be that there are a lot more eat coasters in this thread.

I volunteered at AR twice because the tickets are so expensive and the con is not worth the money.

Sakura con is in Seattle right? I don't go over the border ever but in the case of an anime con I totally would if I had people to go with me. I think my biggest problem is a lack of friends into anime this much or lack of groin general.

Conbravo looks pretty fun but without a car I'm not sure how tricky it'd be to get there from Toronto, so I've never looked too deeply into it. >>
>>9487329
The GO schedules don't go that far ahead but you can get an idea by looking at the previews week's schedule. The main service I see is GO train to Aldershot then transfer to bus until Hamilton GO centre. About 90 minutes total.

The go bus usually come every 20-30 minutes and the length of the ride is usually 45-75 minutes depending on traffic (usually longer on the way to toronto if you are leaving around rush hour). The con is only a 2 minute walk from the go station in hamilton.

I wouldn't recommend taking the train as you are still going take a bus between aldershot and hamilton.
>>
>>9487372
>>9487390
Really? Oh my god that's less time than it takes to get to campus in the morning most days I'm so sold
Gotta be sure of my schedule first and check if SO/friends want to come with but otherwise I am definitely making plans to go now
>>
>>9487444
I take the 47 GO bus from York University with no transfers on the Thurs before the con and if you get off at the city hall (Summer's Lane) it's a 5 min walk to the Sheraton right beside the con center. I think it's about an hour and 20 to get there. Highly recommend.
>>
>>9487820
Unfortunately I'm way out in scarbs so half the time it takes me almost an hour and a half to get to York in the first place, so I feel like the ones from union might cut off a lot of time for me, but thanks for the heads up! I'll definitely look into it and see how timing/ convenience matches up over all

Also for hotels, does anyone know what's up with the Crowne Plaza, did it shut down? Get a name change? It's listed on the con hotels page with a group code but doesnt seem to exist at all when I try to check their rates.
>>
>>9488117
Ah nevermind, I've managed to find out; seems like it's called the Hamilton Plaza Hotel and Conference Center now and doesn't seem to have anything to do with the ihg hotels at all anymore? The old page just redirects to the ihg homepage and the only way I was able to find the new one was through a note on the updated Tripadvisor page, then searching their Facebook page and then finding the website link there. Plus they don't even list the room prices online anymore unless you send a reservation request? Seems pretty sketchy to me in all honesty, thinking I'm gonna stick with the Sheraton or Homewood
