Is anyone else sick of seeing NoFlutter/Zach Fisher/Whoever else designs in competitions? Yeah this costume is lovely and the details are great, but shouldn't competitions be more about making canon costumes?

NF has terrible designs and an ugly art style I wouldn't even put them in the same category, I can't see the appeal of them at all. At least Zach Fisher and Sakizou designs are unique and challenging, although I am sick of seeing them all in comps. Do something different please.
However if I ever see a shitty rip off of a Jnigs cos again I might just get a haemorrhage.

I would prefer them over OC designs. I think they're popular because a lot of canon designs are very simple and contestants want to do elaborate costumes. I know I find it hard to find good sewing costume designs.

i don't mind seeing Sakizou pieces in competitions because they're original artworks and when they're done well they're fantastic, but I really hate seeing complete redesigns of characters like the gothic or armoured disney princesses in comps.

even if canon designs are simple, there are a lot of ways to make them more elaborate when you transfer them into real life. Take Nephi Garcia/designerdaddy's princess dresses for example, they're all exquisitely made and have plenty of extra embellishment, but they're still recognisable as the original canon dresses. It can be done, it just requires some effort and imagination.

Decided to give up on big cons this year and check out some smaller ones. I'm just burnt out for big cons. Supanova is shit, OZCC doesn't interest me, and although I'm interested in Madfest I'm kinda annoyed at how everything is restricted to their licenced stuff and it's a giant vehicle to get people to buy it. It doesn't feel like a proper celebration of anime.

Haven in Mackay seems like it might be fun. Friend told me there's a con in Coffs Harbour called Nexus Con which might be fun to do a road trip to. I was considering Animaga but with Madfest breathing down their neck they might not last much longer.

There aren't that many pure anime cons left in Australia. Animaga in Melbourne, Madfest, Smash in Sydney, AVcon in Adelaide and Aicon in Tasmania are probably the only anime cons left.

Thoughts on calling yourself a cosplayer but has bought every single outfit? For examlple this chick, I've seen her at cons for years now and she walks around thinking she is king shit, but her cosplays are all bought and absolutely trash. Doesn't even buy wigs, just dyes her hair for every outfit she makes. There are a lot of people like this at cons I'm just pointing this one out cause I've noticed her around. Like at least put a little more effort into the cosplays? Get a wig? Cover the horrendous tats? Idk i don't consider these people cosplayers at all.

I had one when I wrote an article way back. Honestly, I didn't get much. I remember they had a lot of issues with people setting up large amounts of equipment even with a pass. Other than that, I wasn't allowed anywhere near where the celebs were due to security reasons. Got to be backstage for the cosplay comps and that was about it. The cosplay comm has really gone to shit these days. I don't really know about half of the people commonly mentioned in these thread, but from my own experience it's become a lot less friendly than it used to be.

Now it's all about people cosplaying whatever's popular to desperately try and get famous, or doing stupid fanservice of whoever is waifu for likes, or generically attractive people doing the bare minimum and getting worshipped like they're the next Christ, or all of the above.

Looks like they're trying to become like San Diego CC in being a hub for big celebrity movie news and panels. Guess they're trying to bank really hard on the Marvel stuff or something. But at the same time, eat into the popularity of OZCC by confusing normies with the new tagline.

They're also trying to get a piece of the PAX/RTX market by bringing in a gaming section. They're partnering up with Twitch and creating a gimmicky all-female esports team to support that. I honestly don't really get why they're introducing this gaming stuff though because gaming is one of those things where you seriously need to dedicate an entire con to it - not just a space.

They're dropping a lot of their anime stuff by the looks of it. At the same time it seems like they're desperate to exploit cosplayers into being free advertisements for them. I don't really get this partnership with Ironlak being aimed at cosplayers. We need proper craft and material supplies, not $1000 worth of graphic markers.

Cosplay guests (at anime conventions anyway) are a standard. Last year they had Kaname and the year before Reika (I think that's the right order) both super popular cosplayers who wouldn't be able to come to Aus without a guest invite.

Just watched some of the A-Muse performance (the one in the convention, not the comp), and damn, their costumes are gorgeous. The dancing was a bit out of sync at times (weird area to do it in so I guess that made it difficult), but I have to give them props for always having really well coordinated costumes. Those petticoats made me happy.
