I'm just going up for the one day this year, mcm really isn't worth the bullshit and expense with the green closed off and no more late night fox. The after-con chaos was the only thing that was worth staying the weekend for, it's not like mcm has more than a days worth of stuff to do.

MCM is about raping your wallet, dodging the mine field of fakes and trying not to make eye contact with Alex Baker as he begs you to buy his stuff as he's on commission. 4/10 event like seeing friends but money aspect is painful.

MCM had mostly college-20s people cosplaying, but this shit was full of fucking 13-15 year old girls wearing dresses and other cosplay shit (people just took pictures with the mostly college-20s aged male cosplayers as a result).

talent show had an androgynous boy with a beautiful voice, a trio of 14-15 year olds doing some weabshit dance in school uniforms, a teen crossdresser dancing, another 16 year old doing some yugioh meme dance, and a girl doing some j-pop k-pop alternating dance(was really good tho).

not a single fucking person over the age of 17, other than maybe that guy in a mask singing a disney song.

I checked the Alcon stuff and it's slightly different, they do say you can be refunded minus a £20 "admin fee" on tickets, and another £20 (also called an "admin fee") if you had accommodation too, before some time in June.
However they follow that by saying its at staff discretion , and that after the date in June has passed, "bookings are already made", and no refunds are available afterwards.

So basically you could request a refund for Alcon before June but the staff could turn around and say "nah senpai, no refund for you" and you can't do squat? And even if you get a refund, you're still down either £20 or £40 (admin fees are that steep?)

Seriously £10 is not a big deal, it really isn't.

Those admin fees are for all the messing around people have to do. So first of all, I know that card payments through Stripe charge £1.75 as a base rate, then 10p for every £1 when the amount exceeds £1.75 (£18+), same in the reverse, so refunding someone AT A MINIMUM through stripe costs £3.50, then you have to bear in mind that the event has to purchase stuff before it runs and pay for the venue and crap. So you say "Well surely they aren't using that money", they probably are.

Stripe is the cheapest option too, paypal takes a bigger cut.

For the record I know the cut stripe takes because i'm a web developer. As for what they spend their money on, I don't know for sure, but I'm not an idiot, I can work out from renting things that you have to pay up front.

Reg is open, it's August 4th-6th. I've been going since 2012 and it's a solid 8/10 for me, it's absolutely not the con to go to if you expect a tight schedule or an events-based weekend, but if you just wanna chill with your mates, play games, take photos in nice outdoor locations and get smashed around a massive bonfire, it's absolutely lit. You know the stairs at Ame? It's basically a whole weekend of that if you put on your big boy briefs and talk to people.

I don't usually bother with the physical events because I didn't bring six inch wedges for that shit, but the otaku royale one where you get given literally any random shit as a weapon is pure banter. Tampon, toilet roll, q-tip, condom, actual moving water cannon, you can get given absolutely anything and you have to get someone else wet with it. I don't think you can really say you've done toko properly until you've at least tried otaku royale.

Age wise, I would say most are in their twenties, with a fairly even spread across early, mid and late. There are a lot more oldfags than most UK cons I've been to, it age range skews noticeably higher than something like kita. It's like Minami in that a lot of old farts who are fucked off with modern day con shenanigans attend. You will get the odd fresh-out-of-freshers-week wanker around the fire, but it's not like you're obliged to humour them.

Sounds pretty swish, traditional games and nerdy board games are my Jam ever since Ayacon2011 where the dude in cosplay had set up the Resident Evil Deck-building game in the upstairs lounge. I'll have to bring a couple that I'm not too worried if I lose half the pieces to.

Biggest concern at the moment is my friend keeping up since he is a degenerate "Morning person." who can't hold his alcohol very well.
