Varies really but the only cons that would actually work out are video game related ones. Since you could easily be seen as going from one of the recent shooters that came out. Ghost Recon Wildlands has typical tacticool gear over plain clothes but they don't have a really different appearance. It's not like Future Soldier where the characters had things that made them stand out as Ghosts.

But yeah these type of cosplays usually work more for vidya related cons than anime or even comic ones. Unless they have something apart of them that sets them to a series that stands out.

>>
>>9394585
Well, chances are you didn't recognize them because like 75% of the people let their gear look completely wrong and lazy.

Chances are those groups are:

>Metro and S.T.A.L.K.E.R
Slav Shitters who like to dance and listen to electronic Music

>Umbrella Corps
The guys literally no one seems to care about, as they all look kind of cheap

>The Division
Backpacks with one Sling only. Have shiny watches!

>Metal Gear Solid
80% Snakes, 15% GREAT cosplays of other characters, 5% people in random Gear claiming to be MGS

Battlefield is pretty rare, at least in Europe. Same applies to Call of Duty, with the exception of one character, Ghost.
>>
>>9394586
Umbrella can be cool if effort is put into it, but the pull is sullied by a lot of people who just buy cheap tactical gear and slap an umbrella logo on their sleeve.

Still fun if you're into being in groups/ getting group photos.
>>
>>9395007
Yeah, I kinda just see it as the video game equivalent of Stormtroopers
>>
>>9394620
That's actually not that bad for such a big and complicated prop. I know people who've spent over $1000 for a sword.

>>9394851
Don't forget that a lot of people just wear their airsoft gear to the con, or are /k/ guys who like dressing up to go shoot in the desert/woods/whatever.

I'm acquainted with a group of guys who make military-style anime patches and they usually come to cons in full camo and vests and everything.

If your cosplay is identifiable and you're at a gaming con then you get a pass in my book. If you just throw on your weekend bbwars outfit though and call it a "Call of Duty/Battlefield" cosplay then you deserve to be thrown out of a helicopter. Even more so if you show up to a anime or comic con dressed like that.

Really? Me and my buddy we just walked past prop check with our airsoft guns in bags (they were all disabled via triggers removed and barrels stuffed) then assembled them once we were past I even had prop shells on me which I semi-loaded into the shotgun for pics a few times.

Hell we actually had two con staff stop us but they only wanted to get pictures. Though with the shotgun I wasn't aiming it around the place and mostly had it slung during pictures, same with my friend.

He pretends to shoot her with his handgun and she says, "That wouldn't hurt me!" A Stormtrooper these days is: Buy a kit, sand it a bit and make it look shiny. That's it.

The key to a good military vidya cosplay is knowledge. You have to know what you buy, otherwise it'll look shit. The key difference here is research. Stormtroopers need literally none. The have EVERYTHING available to buy as well.

Sums it up pretty much. A lot of people don't have the money to spend on real milspec gear (very expensive) so they just cobble together a bunch of cheap airsoft gear that vaguely resembles their character and call it a day. I'll admit anon, I can't afford the real spec stuff either. There are affordable airsoft clones, that come close enough to call it a day. But many won't even do that. They'll pick the cheapest. Which usually ends up being the wrong-est.

>Maybe add a pouch with a RC drone on the back and add some more 5.11 gear to flesh it out a bit more?

5.11 themselves didn't even get the character's names right. I'll tell my Holt about the drone though. I'm pretty happy with my Midas actually. Not perfect, but I already spent a few hundreds on it, I simply don't have any more. Even did the custom "Goobisoft put a plate bag onto a plate carrier lol" thing.

Also please note, we're based on the render artwork/E3 Trailer, not the ingame Stuff. Which is really fucking annoying when they bump out a cosplay-guide AND THEN CHANGE EVERY FUCKING THING.

Maybe it's due to being a filthy Ausfag but I've never noticed a hatred/condescension toward milsim/airsoft gear.

>do you have any suggestions for how to dye/paint/color the shoulder straps?
I wouldn't dye the shoulder straps, just get something in a similar color. There are military duffel bags in OD green that might be good to scavenge the straps from. You can sometimes find them cheap too.

>recently went to a con as HUNK

>girl standing outside door waiting for me for a picture
>I pose for her and she says "Give me a high five, you always come back alive"
>walk down the hall another girl asks if Raccoon city is safe yet
>joke with her for a bit and continue down the hall
>later on a guy says to his friend "there's some Umbrella scum here"
>his friend is dressed as Leon
>they come towards me & we do a bunch of poses together
>more people want shots, met some cool ppl
>at the end of the con, crossing the street with my friends
>rush out ahead in the cross walk & hurriedly motion for them to evacuate
>drivers stopped at red light are confused as my friends laugh

I had a blast, it comes down to what >>9398371 said. If you're gonna do a military themed cosplay, you gotta do it right. I'm going to upgrade some parts of mine for next con.
>>
>>9451581

Thanks for the links. Maybe I can make them work.

I've gone to cons in previous years as HUNK and had some similar experiences too despite not being entirely accurate. Maybe because I was the only one even close to the original outfit. Only guy with red lenses and an S10. This year will be the first year I push for high accuracy on the costume. I wore
BDUs
instead of the flight suit. Finally got an MP5, flight suit, and correct pattern knee pads.

Duffel bags in OD green with removable padding straps that will fit my LBV exactly? I've heard other people recommend just taking the straps from a different vest etc., but everywhere I look it seems like the right kind just isn't in stock anymore. The other option I have is to go for his Racoon City outfit where the straps are black and he has an off black vest under the LBV. Don't suppose you'd know where I can find a vest like that?
>>
>>9450709

Well, they're not removable. You'd have to take a seem ripper to the stitches but it's a cheap option. I got lucky, I used some old surplus stuff that I had from years before that was the right color and shape.
Another option is to modify military Y harness/suppenders for the ALICE system. They're OD green. You'd just have to sew some thing on your vest for them to connect to so it looks right.

Next con I'm thinking of doing the version of HUNK in The Mercenaries 3DS but that requires getting an airsoft AK-74. Don't suppose anyone knows where I could find a cheap one?

I actually don't even remember Rouge Coyote since they were so minor when compared to Zero Risk and CFA, so your mileage may vary with others. I'd say that it's a good idea to be with a MGS group though if you aren't cosplaying a main character in general. Everyone knows Snake and Ocelot, but not many people will recognize Gurlukovich Mercs, Peace Sentinels, Praying Mantis PMCs, etc.

Take this Soviet heavy unit from MGSV for example. To someone that's never played the game long enough to see heavy units, they would think you're doing a Tachanka cosplay even though the helmet and vest are wrong.

Why did you spend so much on the wrong gear?

I'm wanting to do a spin off of metro 2033, but from what i'm reading its more respected to do a character accurately or fuck off?

I'm wanting to do a "tunnel slav" I'm not sure if the concept will make sense/ look good.

costume:
-combat boots
-Adidas track pants
- some kind of russian gear top/ tenly
- OD green chest rig
-ski mask or gp-7 gas mask
- 1/4 finger gloves
>>
>>9474536
In that case Fuck off.

Do a character and not some random gear shit.
>>
>>9474536

If you're going to cosplay, do a character that actually showed up in the series. Otherwise what's the fucking standard?
>>
>>9474558
Thats exactly the answer im looking for.

There was ONE group that really made me laugh, they used an idea I'd had myself - they made ghillie suits... out of the same carpet pattern used at the convention hall. With this, there's a visual joke that works really well; it's amusing and unusual.

Otherwise, just slouching around in random military gear just... bothers me. Although there was that one year at AWA that someone in full Russian army getup was wandering around, looking confused, with a map, and asking people (in an excellent Russian accent,) where the "rest of the army was."

I can tell right off the bat that it's a Battlefield Engineer class cosplay.
What sets it off is the M15 AT Mine on his back
>>
>>9474536
Hey friend, don't ask /cgl/ for their advice on this.
Go on /k/ and ask this on a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. challenge thread.
They'll hook you up with some good links for milsurp gear you want.
>>
>>9475055
I think it always depends. Random gear is shit. But if it's from a certain game or other source and has something recognizable about it, fuck man, why not do it?

For example Snake with the bandana and the Harness, or the Rainbow Six Siege Characters or something

So Mid-80's Soviet TTsKo is, genuinely, impossible to find in my size. Is this custom-dyed stuff close enough to be passing for a Gurlukovich Merc, or am I going to get shat on by other MGS nerds?
>>
>>9476092
Should be fine enough. Just try to find a base pattern that is closer than Woodland. Otherwise it should work fine enough.
>>
>>9475108
You sure that's an engineer cosplay? Looks like a typical consofter who's using the con as an excuse to wear as much gear as possible.
>>
>>9476444
He might just be using his airsoft gear, but I don't know why he would have that type of mine strapped to his back unless he were cosplaying Battlefield.
He's just using recognizable pieces to his cosplay because Battlefield characters really are THAT generic.
I haven't seen the front or how his friends look, but they might be using shit like defib units, blow torches, fake detonators, etc.
Doesn't look 1 to 1, but I'm assuming that's what they're trying to do.
>>
>>9475108
Uhm. No?

The BF3 and 4 Engineers don't have a helmet but a Cap with a Headset.
>>
>>9476470
Maybe someone should tell him that.
I just noticed the mine on his back and concluded Battlefield.

So to all future Tachankas:
Mind the DP-28 Pouches. They will probably arrive in different shading. Also they have clips in the inside to stabilize the Magazines. Those are Metal and you probably can't really sew the grenade pouches on without a trick

Also, should you want measurements of the magazines, I can give you. You probably wouldn't want to carry them on a convention, as they are a total of 12 Kilograms.

Seems a little off. Maybe it's just my judgement, or my memory is wrong. But didn't the light guys have either no helmet or no chest rig? The guys that had both had the parka over the Shirt.

Apparently, canvas from the 60's don't take too well to black dye.

Still, aside from some minor bits and bobs, my Gurlukovich merc is done.

Black dye on the belt Load carrying Equipment? Well, if you really want that dyed, just use spray paint. It holds really well on canvas and nylon. You can't really wash it, but who washes their gear?

Pretty much this. I always try to not associate myself with the types of people who do Umbrella Corp. cosplays. Metal gear cosplayers and others are generally fine though since there are so little of them compared to the hordes of fat dudes in Israeli gas masks, plastic helmets, and Umbrella patches.

I've been wanting to do GATE forever but that damn camo is a bitch to get, especially in my size. I know there's a real camo that looks a lot like the custom Special Region camo they have in the anime, but I can't remember what it is.

I saw a pretty good Itami and Rory couple at ALA last year but he was wearing Flecktarn.

TMC made Jeitai for a while but I don't think they make it anymore.
