I don't think a crossover can't "make sense." By it's very nature, crossover cosplays are often supposed to combine two completely unrelated fandoms.

Whether the costume is well done or not is a different issue entirely. But that doesn't depend upon whether or not the costume "makes sense." I've seen a good Deadpool Sora, Ryu Sonic, etc. Pic related

Pretty much all boils down to this. How to get more attention: combine 2 things to double it! I remember /cgl/ despising Ryuko/Yoko cosplayers because it was the equivalent to Harley Quinn and Overmeme today.

Lemme tell you about this fb friend from high school who makes it a point to make nearly every cosplay she does a crossover, and not even ones that have fanart or make sense. She's just making it up as she goes with even less frame of reference. Also a big fan of bad genderbent cosplay.
Her current "project" is a FFXV Kingsglaive version of MGSV's Quiet. Past dropped endeavors include a Resident Evil Sailor Mars, an RE Kairi from Kingdom Hearts, and several others I'm sure I'm blocking from memory. She seems to best like trying to put all her favorite characters/franchises into one poorly done and unrecognizable cosplay.
I'd post pics, but none of the crossovers have ever gone beyond the "bad makeup test and bought a wig" phase.
