Who else was disappointed that they didn't attempt their original dress in the new version?

Meanwhile on Etsy there are dresses that are at least close if not as good as it might get for cartoon physics.

It looks like a goddamn prom dress. Something like this would've been perfect.
>>
>>9366788
Well, we have the brilliance of Emma Watson to thank for that. If you read the Entertainment article. the director is very quick to inform all the changes to Belle was on her.
>>
>>9366788
I've been following the production of this film for a few years and all that time I was planning to make her ball gown as soon as the first pictures leaked out. The disappointment couldn't be greater.
>>
>>9366824
>>9366939

I just don't get her supercharged obsession with ~modernizing Belle so much. She doesn't wear a corset! She's an inventor! She's aggressive and in control of her own destiny!

...was Belle not good enough already? She already stood out because it was implied she was the only one in town who could read or at the very least, the only one who cared enough to make a habit out of it. She wasn't aware of her weird perception and didn't really dwell on it once she found out.

I thought Emma was a pretty decent choice for Belle but goddamn, almost everything I've heard about her input on it has severely degraded my interest in the whole thing.
>>
>>9367011
This is nothing, Emma has a history of making it all about her behind the scenes. Like when she fucked over the HP filming schedule to go to college she later dropped out of.
She refuses wigs which is why Belle looks like she just rolled out of bed. There was a post on Tumblr that detailed all the shit she's pulled. If I find it I'll screen shot it
>>
>>9367041
Please do. If you can also find the quote with her her snubbing disney princesses because of "muh feminism", I'd be much obliged.

>>
>>9367247
It's irritating when something is, yet again, being changed in the name of feminism or some other bull shit "progressive" ideology.
Emma Watson is too afraid of a little discomfort in a corset.
Meanwhile, Uma Thurman was thrown from a horse in Kill Bill 2 and broke bones and she powered through it.
Tell me again how empowering feminism is.

>>
>>9367256
What do you mean "what". She didn't want a corset because a: she finds them too uncomfortable and b: she's under the assumption that Belle wouldn't be able to wear one to a ball and still be "an active princess"
I'm comparing her to another actress who actually got severely injured on set and still filmed her damned movie.
Emma Watson's brand of feminism is so ass backwards.
>>
>>9367261

>>
>>9367247
I'm not the anon you originally responded to btw. I'm not really buttmad since The Lion King was my shit as a kid. Beauty and the Beast was set in 1700 France.. the movie dress looks like a modern prom dress like an earlier anon said. It's lackluster and would look cooler if it was more historically accurate like a french ballgown.

>>
>>9367237

The writers said they regretted that line once people started pointing out that he would have been a child when he was cursed. There's a reason they completely do away with any mention of age or how many years have passed in the Broadway version.
>>
>>9367310

The movie's time/space is pretty fucked up, yo.

>Belle goes to rescue her Dad. It's night time. Father gets shoved in coach, Belle gets shoved in jail. Dinner scene, etc etc.
>Day scene in snow
>Day scene with library
>Evening ballgown scene (night)

Meanwhile
>Father arrives at his house (night), just in time for Belle to see him panicking so she insists on going to see him
>ok, so the castle is a day's ride away from the village
>Or so you think

>Belle apparently teleports home, because she arrives before he even leaves his house
>angry mob mobilizes at castle gates the same night

Maybe the castle is also under enchantment and appears nearer or further away according to movie audience patience/plot desirability
>>
>>9367438

Meh. It's just one of those things that can be overlooked so long as the story's good.
>>
A good Beast cosplay would require the skills of a fursuit maker without any of the furry bullshit that invariably accompanies them.

As for Belle's ball gown, I've always thought that the famous gold gown was ugly as sin. Sure, Emma Watson's "reinterpretation" is exceedingly lame, but the original looks like a deflated quinceañera dress.

People always fuck it up by taking what they see on screen literally and overloading it with tons of ruching and bridal satin. Makes it look wrinkled IRL and oh so cheap. Even the version that the actresses wear around the various Disney parks always looks horribly stiff and frumpy.

I don't think anon is specifically complaining about historical accuracy, but rather that in a movie taking place in a specific era we're given a pretty lackluster gown, ignoring all the glorious opulence they could have easily drawn on for her gown design.
>>
I hate Emma Watson so much for this. The 1991 Beauty and the Beast is my favourite movie and I can't even begin to care about this remake. Her stupid re-imagining of Belle, how she sounds so snotty in the Belle sequence...

>>9367234
>>9367237
>>9367245

I've come to think that, if we're trying to place the movie historically, it actually takes place well after the French revolution, perhaps around the 1830s or 1840s. The Beast is not a royal prince but a provincial prince, so it's not like the Bourbon heir is missing or anything. His parents could sent him away to a little-known countryside chateau to hide him from all the political turmoil and revolutions still happening. The fashion in the movie fits in more with the 1800s than 1700s I think anyway.

And I don't think he was 10 when he got Beasted, even with the 'ten years' line. If they've all been sequestered in that castle, then then maybe the ten years line could refer to how long they've been in hiding, not how long they've been objects.
>>
>>9367446

Yeah, just pointing out that Prince Beast being 11 when he was cursed for not having proper manners is totally in line with everything else in the movie having elastic time and distance.
>>
>>9367476
I was always under the assumption that their ages froze when they were turned, hence chip still being a little kid.

>>9367479

I heard that from fans, yet another way to rationalise the timing inconsistency.

Looking at the movie's own timeline, though, it's kinda obvious the writers didn't really work out proper timing for everything, they probably just put in whatever sounded good to them: ten-year curse, overnight mob, whatever.

Belles are so hit or miss. The yellow dress is hard to translate irl. I think the best ones take a bit of creative license and remember to use plenty of petticoats over the cage. Otherwise you get that sad "i bought this and a hoop online" look you see at cons these days.

>>9367554
it's because their hoops are designed to fit girls who vary in height by an inch or so in either direction, plus they don't want any petti to be dragging on the ground so everything's too fucking short.
>>
>>9368487

pic related, the panniers are a mess but at least her bodice looks nice
>>
>>9368489
I know this is based off of Shoomlah's design, but that bodice looks like it's moments away from sliding down her torso.
>>
I'd like to see someone attempt the Cocteau version even though it's goofy. Seems like the new movie is going for something like this, but of course Disney has to water everything down into generic garbage. I'm really embarrassed by the new beast. It's just a hairy man face...
>>
Genuine question for people who say "X is historically inaccurate thus inferior"
What about the original designs? Which are often only loosely-inspired-by-history, at best?

>>9368029
I love creative license when it goes right. Like in this dress, the embroidery of the rose on the bodice is a fantastic subtle touch that gives it so much more detail without sacrificing the basic overall design of the dress.
Whereas those cameo's are cheap and tacky af and so out of place.

>>
Wow it's depressing to see all of these beautiful unique versions of Belle and her dress and who could have been in the live action movie, only to have autotuned one-note acting Emma Watson fuck it all up with a debs tier prom dress and modern hairstyling as the final product. And that ear cuff, I fucking can't anymore. An ear cuff?! Nope, I'm done.
>>
>>9367011
I think what frustrates me is she acts like her choices make more sense?
"Like oh my belle wears boots because you cant be a strong independent woman in flats!" Like cool girl you dont have to be corseted if you dont want to, and things dont have to translate literally, but I'm not entirely sure she knows what shes talking about.

And with the rest of the movie being VERY rooted in the more classic style of the original... the new dress just clashes so hard. I mean I didnt like Cinderella (the live action) that much, but god damn it was some high caliber dress porn and aesthetically pleasing all around.

>>9368643
Cinderella is honestly a hard story to do right. The new movie suffered from a really boring take on Cindy herself, and nothing to really add any new perspective or takes on the story. These movies keep fucking up their princess's (Aurora from Maleficent was the same) but at least they manage to hit good aesthetics. With out that, this new Beauty and the Beast is destined for awful from the looks of things.

But yeah no at least Cinderella was gorgeous. I was drooling the whole time over the step mothers wardrobe.

She clearly doesn't know what she's talking about. French peasant women at the time were doing backbreaking labor way more intense than "inventing", and they were all wearing working class stays. It's like saying OH BELLE CAN'T WEAR A BRA, BRAS PREVENT MOVEMENT bitch what.

Yeah. I was disappointed because even though it was a GORGEOUS movie, the story was just meh for me. I liked the deer thing I guess...? >>9367254
I'm really annoyed by her whole take on this. if she wanted to push her feminist take on the story, Watson certainly could have found someone to work with. There are plenty of other actresses who would have been willing to cooperate and deal with being a little bit uncomfortable for the chance to wear breathtaking costumes.
>>
If you guys want more interesting costumes, take a look at the french version.
Personally, the director chose to work with Emma so it can't have been that big of a deal. Bit of a bummer for the costume department but whatever.

I really liked the idea of the first wife being a magical creature that fell for him, but the movie's plot depended entirely on her being way too in love with him.

> he kills it, and thus her
