RIP me, university corseload got really intense these last few weeks. I have some hand sewing and a tiny bit of weathering left but im mostly done. Travelling with some semi fragile props and ill have to spend maybe an hour and a half reassembling them at the hotel room.

This. Walk up to any reporter taking pictures. If you have a nice costume, he/she will take pictures of you. If you ask for the pics, he/she will let you know where they'll be published. Do this with a few different photographers and you got yourself a nice set of professional photographs, all for free.

I will agree that a certain degree that you have to git gud for recognition.
One thing you don't seem to understand about the human psyche is how much we need something to resemble what we already know. There are precious few well known dark skin characters in pop culture that are recognizable on sight. So that's a problem to even find someone you look like.
Humans have such varying noses, lips, eye shape, cheekbones that are prevalent in each race. By and large, black folks aren't gonna have the facial features of (insert white character here) so even if you have an affinity for a character there is a slim chance you're going to look like them.

Add that up, less characters to chose from that could look like you sorta and not even having the facial feature of white characters.... no one is going to notice you even if you did do a good job. Because you don't look like what they remember.


I can attest to this cause I've been cosplaying for 17 years and I'm damn good. The only cosplays of mine anyone ever lost their shit over.... when there is a brown character everyone knows and I happen to look like them.
The rest of my stuff is nice and people like it. But they don't share those pics. They only share the ones that I look like the character too.

Photographer here, here's what I noticed about black cosplayers. After a con, I usually throw my hall shots out in the usual places. Most of the people are finding their photos because a friend tagged them or they themselves saw it or because they handed me a business card so I could tag them are usually white or asian. Just from my experience, what black cosplayers are lacking is their ability to market themselves/have a strong online presence/have friends and connections within their local community. Some of them are very good cosplayers, some of them are even cute as fug, but their lack of self marketing/attention whoring ability is why they fall by the wayside.

This is the first Katsucon in a long while I'm not actively stressing myself out to cosplay. I didn't really cosplay at MAGfest and despite running into some horribly socially inept morons it was pretty fantastic con. I need to step back from cosplay and reevalute it so if I wear any its just shit I've done before or a yellow t-shirt and blue pants as morty for drinking and vaping. maybe an old asscreed costume. Just found out I can go to katsu-con this year, I live 5 minutes away. I havn't cosplayed in 8 or so years, does anyone have any easy recommendations so I can join in on the fun? I just want something simple.

I'm not afraid of the professor, but I am annoyed that they're allowing students to miss class without penalty since it's a class that only meets for about 13 sessions throughout the semester. It's also frustrating because traveling on Thursday night or Friday morning would be much more affordable than traveling on Friday night.
