The general attendee hotel block is opening in about 2 weeks. Who's going?

>Favorite places to eat nearby?
>Recs on which hotels are better?
>Who are you hoping for as guests?

This is my first time ever going to AX, hope it lives up to the hype.
>>
>>9341241
This will be my third year I think at the Bonaventure. I have to start working on my cosplay now if i hope to finish it by then...

>This is my first time ever going to AX, hope it lives up to the hype.

Where you coming from? And it definitely will.
>>
>>9341241
>This is my first time ever going to AX
Preparet to spend at least half the convention waiting in lines to get into panels you want to see.
>>
I'm thinking about going this year, haven't been since '08, and i only went one day that year.

I live in long beach so I'm not really planning to get a hotel room (although it would be nice)

Can't wait, last time I went was 2013.
>>
My first time there - day 1 <arrive straight from airport - pickup badges ~so far no problems all good>

9AM: morning time "hey, the hotel check-in is in the afternoon;2 friends go - were gonna get tickets to <autograph-something> ok, I'll just hang out in this long hall way with our luggages.......................................................................

5PM: they come back saying the line was long hmmmmmmm..............................................never again.
<hinted to out loud, I should've just came to con by myself>
>>
Their premier badge hotel block sold out within a few minutes I heard for the near hotels. I really do not want to imagine general block. The hotel booking mess is kind of why I might never go back to AX.
>>
>>9342066
>The hotel booking mess is kind of why I might never go back to AX.
You can always book ur own hotel...
>>
>>9341324
I know last year was the biggest AX because of its anniversary, but how is it on normal years? 1-2 hours?
>>
>>9342214
Depends on the panel you want, sometimes the lines will be cut off 1~2 hours in advance, other times you can get in line like 10 minutes before and be fine. For anything even remotely popular at least 2 hours is good, if you absolutely do not want to miss it I suggest 3.
>>
>>9342114
I always book my own hotel. Its like last year I was on as soon as it went up and had to settle for Sheraton. Having to walk far was not fun and dealing with the shuttle filling up and waiting for another was annoying. Being so hard to get a room is why I may just do ALA. I mostly go to see friends and cosplay with them.
>>
the convention center is only a 20 minute drive from my place and getting a hotel would just be a waste of money, but man do I wish I had a hotel when I'm actually at AX.
>>
Going but not staying in a hotel, going to do airbnb and uber.

Cheaper and I can get a room to myself
>>
Just booked at Bonaventure.

It's been a while since I've been to a con, so I don't think my skills are good enough to start cosplaying again.

That, and I'm rooming with normie friends so I don't know if they'd be okay with all my props lying around. I'm afraid one of them might break something.

Got a pass on black friday, going for the first time. Will probably just ending up perusing the dealer's hall.
>>

>>
>>9342702
>How bad is the shuttle wait usually?
bad enough that it is faster to just go and start walking down which is not too bad
>>
Had 2 rooms at the Bonaventure canceled since they were booked with someone else's premier (had a feeling it wouldn't work but tried anyway).

Going to try for the general attendee block at 9 sharp, and if that doesn't work, well, fuck
>>
Is everybody going to be on edge due to the political climate?
>>
>>9343961
ALA was pretty devoid of political bs, even the liberal types seemed to withhold from crying about manspreading from what I saw
>>
>>9342606
That's nothing, people pay $2-5k getting rooms at Dragoncon.
>>
>>9343961
congoers do not give a shit about politics at cons because it's not on facebook so they can't feel like they're helping and getting asspats

truth be told most people don't give a shit about politics and i'd be amazed if most of the people who post on facebook about it even go and vote themself
>>
>>9343961

>>
Is it just me or is the ticketed events really late on the announcement?

does the quiet room count as a safe space
>>
>>9341241
>>>Favorite places to eat nearby?

>>Recs on which hotels are better?
dunno have yet to stay at one, hoping to this year

>>Who are you hoping for as guests?
hoping for some good bands
>>
>>9343916
Bonaventure is pretty easy to get since most people go after the closer hotels. Also it's right on the reservation page that you can only get one room per name.

>>9344121
They were still announcing stuff in June last year and had only just put Anisong World Matsuri tickets on sale at the very end of May.
>>
>>9344121
just you
if they announced now it'd be really early for AX. bulk of their announcements are historically may and june
>>
>>9344239
yeah i know it says that, didn't see it until after we booked though
the hotel policies page said you could use the same card for more than one room so we thought it applied to the premier block too

are the those bacon wrapped hot dogs sold by the street vendors safe?
>>
>>9345125
safe as in they aren't going to kill you? yeah, should be fine. safe as in you aren't going to have to dash to take a number two suddenly while waiting in line for a panel? depends on how your body handles the oily greasy mess. it's a delicious oily greasy mess, for sure, but everyone has different reactions to it.
>>
>>9345125
I had a regular dog no bacon, two friends got it with bacon and regretted life. Do yourself a favor and say 'no mayo' before the dog even reaches the bun my friend.
>>
So I just bought a full weekend pass and got charge for $80. The price was $75. What the $4 charge about?
>>
>>9345410
probably eventbrite fee or whatever company they use

trust me, the $4 is worth it to have an ease of use compared to previous years.
>>
>>9345248
Yeah just a rating since I seem to hear a 50/50 response about them ranging from "oh sooo good" to "stay away" - but I think either picky eaters which didn't eat/won't chance it.

>>9345254

Oh. You asked for it.
Expected of AX:
"Oh, hey you guys, you've been standing there for 30 minutes, but I'm just now telling you the line is around the corner (lol)"

>(prequel). 'Doors' nearly an hour past schedule.
>1. The smell.
>2. First table in the door got a girl we warmly refer to as 'Rancor-chan'
>3. Ghetto shit as fuck
>4. NO EFFORT into their costumes, those poor safety pinned-on tails will haunt me.
>5. I didn't buy food, but god the poor saps that did: served themselves, bussed themselves, and paid out the nose for bottom tier offerings.
>6. Most of the attractive girls looked the same, and someone was clearly biased and hired as many 'ethnic' girls as possible, no not Asian, latina etc. They must have beat the white girls off with sticks there were so few of them.
>7. There was a super awkward interlude where the butlers danced, no this was not in the programming.
>8. I ALMOST FORGOT HOLY SHIT. All of the attractive girls were' dancers' and never set foot even close to the tables, straight up uggo to homely girls they put in the 'customer service' roles.
I wish I was just being facetious and it wasn't actually that bad, homie, but it was. I will 4get.
>>
>>9345540
Mayo in the hot ass July sun + no refrigeration = bad at any quality
>>
>>9345566
oh man i dodged a bullet on that one. i almost went to that because i thought the japanese pole dancer was there and they redirected me to a different room down the way. she was pretty good. while it was billed as cosplay burlesque there was only a couple of dances (plus the pole dancer) and the rest was drunk people fun time. audience participation with games.
>>
What's the best way to find people to share your room with? My gf and I are from out of state and looking to cut down on costs.
>>
>>9345621
facebook group maybe. cosplay.com isn't used that much anymore but it might be worth a shot.
>>
>>9342772
>buying a badge just to spend more money
>>
>>9346161
Wouldn't it be nice if the cost of the badge can be given back as a form of in-convention credit..idk, either for purchasing from a new vendor at the con, artist alley, ax products etc...food
>>
>>9346161
Those exclusives tho
>>
>>9346179
That would eat into profits heavily

>>9346161
It's okay, they could be paying $400 to wait in line
>>
>>9346264
>That would eat into profits heavily
The idea is like how vegas hotel casino's entice returning guests with gameplay credit - could be as little as $20 value - essentially the money goes back in.
>for a non-profit like AX to worry about profits...baka
>>
>>9346300
They don't need an incentive program for people to come back and while they might be a non profit they still need to have a decent amount of available money to spend on subsequent.conventions. Guess where all the money for the LACC, guests, etc comes from.
>>
Went last year and for sure its my last. Waited in lines 3hrs in advance to get a ticket for guest of honor but they ran out. None of the staff bothered to tell the people that were still in line that it was now for tickets to meet other guests. Hallways obnoxiously full, same goes for gatherings - can't get decent pictures. Only highlight was a 21+ even I went to. Oh and someone hit my car in the convention parking lot.

Anyway, I'm just old and miss the good 'ol days when AX was small enough to be in the Anaheim Convention Center.
>>
>>9346902
autograph line is pretty brutal. woke up really early every day just for autographs. which guest did you try for? if it was TMR, lol fat chance. so many people wanted him and he only had one session. at least it's no longer in the entertainment hall because that was ridiculous since they had no system for 2-3 days and people were rushing the doors. finally they made a line starting outside and only for autographs which evolved into the current system you have now.
>>
Since I usually have a friend that gives me their extra volunteer ticket, I thinking about a hotel this time. The only time I got a hotel was 2013 at the JW Marriot, and jesus that was the most fun year. Have hotels gotten even harder to get nowadays?
>>
Why is Amalee a guest? Maybe it's just me but I hate it when Youtubers get guest status. It's one thing for them to get free press badges or whatever, but besides the production quality of her covers her voice and lyrics are pretty average.
>>
>>9346300
>essentially the money goes back in.
You really didn't think that through.
>>
I really want to go sometime but I heard it's mostly standing in line to do anything.
>>
>>9351937
Pick 2-4 panels a day if you really want to and revolve your schedule around em. Theres plenty of shit to do where you dont have to wait in line tho
>>
What's up with the weird schedule this year? Day 0 is Friday and Day 4 is Tuesday? It feels weird having the Masquerade be on a Monday and still having another day of the con after that...
>>
>>9352388
4th of July falls on Tuesday.
>>
>Already bought passes from Black Friday sale
>Waiting for general block to open
>Still have not heard from my regular con partners if they are going or not
>Can't even tell if I want to go or not

If I do go, it will be my third year. Used to be hyped about out of state conventions, but most of the glitter is already gone for me, so this may be the last convention I'll attend in general before settling down.

worse
AX lines are SDCC lines lite version but it's just a matter of time til it turns into a copy of SDCC
You want to camp outside every night? Then you want SDCC

big name autographs you camp outside so at 7am when the line actually moves everyone goes upstairs to try for tickets. you pull a ticket from a box and if you win you get to choose what autograph you want. if you lose then you have to go to the end of the line and try again and if the line is already huge you might not get a second chance because they will run out of autographs.

the line is really long by 9pm the night before. Depending on what you want to do since the line is not just for autographs you might have to be even earlier. Someone in you group is going to have to sacrifice and get there early. Preferably you have at least 1 other person join them later on and the rest help with food supplies and anything else. Everyone else joins in the morning. It's humid and gross underneath the tents they have the line in because the water vapor can't get out. You're sleeping on the grass or if you brought them a blanket or a chair.

I've seen some shit.
>>
Oh and as a comparison it used to be that 5am would get you what you wanted. as I said, it's now 9pm, and that might not be early enough.
>>
>>9346937
diff anon, but i think i rolled out of bed around 5:30 and managed to get the *last* ticket for TMR. i wanted to try for Suwabe too, but by the time i got to the front for the TMR ticket, he was already out so i didn't bother getting back in line.

We did that on the final days last time we came..for the convenience of about 5bucks/day to ride both ways works out..better than waiting in the line for the shuttle or walking that 15-30min and sweatin along the way

I still feel like it was the reason that it was not shown off at anime expo last year but was at E3 last year.

Regardless I just hate how I fucked up and just wanna have a good time at AX like everyone else. I also expect the cosplay to be pretty rad this year.

Also hope I motivate myself enough to pick someone up. Friends can't stop being on my ass about "why the fuck didn't you hit on em" and shit. I can easily do it and be a smooth motherfucker but man the energy and payoff is just not worth it.

Guests must wear the wrist band to access the guest room elevators. There will be a maximum of four (4) wrist bands per room. Do they really enforce this? Because I originally put only 2 guests on the reservation even though I am bringing 4 people. Should I modify or will they be able to sneak in, seems risky.

The Par Avion site somehow worked on Firefox but not Chrome as the servers were getting slammed, and since the majority of people use Chrome they couldn't really access it for a while. Residence Inn was the first to sell due to good area/$ ratio, with queen/queen going almost instantly. However, as most people thought the website was down for longer than it actually was, king rooms were readily available 15 minutes into booking. Every other hotel except the JW was completely open as well up to 10 minutes into booking.

This year, the phone system broke. While usually the user would be put on hold until the next client, this year a time-out system was implemented where after a certain time the user would be redirected to an automated voicemail. The typical strategy of calling in a few minutes prior was abused and most people were dropped and redirected.

Managed to book in total through various methods:
two queen/queen @ residence
two king @ residence with high priority on WL
one queen/queen @ JW

The best currently available hotel irrespective of price would be the Intercontinental. The Intercontinental is part of a plan to revitalize the LA downtown area by increasing the capacity of LACC as well as housing opportunities to directly compete with other cities such as SD, LV, Anaheim, etc. The Intercontinental will be a brand new hotel featuring 900 rooms, and be located in a building that's the tallest skyscraper in the Western USA. In fact, the website was just updated in the last few weeks. While the Intercontinental is a bit far, it is still within walking distance. It appears that a large block of the Intercontinental will be available to Anime Expo fans through the hotel block.

As a result of having such a large chunk of hotels, there's expected to be more opportunities for housing this year than in previous years.

I just plan to get a week TAP pass (25$) even if my hotel is about shy of a mile - so I don't have to worry about a shuttle wait since in that cluster of hotels around AX, buses go around apx 20min. Walked the last time I went to AX all week just to end up all sweaty once you hit the con just to save a few bucks each day - just doing 2 round trips min. with the pass for 5 days make it worth it imho.

3k is too much for a 5 days stay. If anyone staying at the westin, tell me your story. I wanna know that bad and the good.
>>

huh, maybe I'm just used to it then? I live in the bay area, so I'm used to walking up shitty hills and such. last year I walked from the con to the westin multiple times a day, in heels and it didnt really bother me?
the last day was when i used an uber cause i was carrying merch and artist supplies

I can imagine if you're in armor that would suck, but for anyone not in cosplay or with a physical disability it seems kinda eh to be dissatisfied about the walk

It's a miserable time, imo. The lines are massive. The venue has been pushing max capacity for years. It's at the hottest time of the year in one of the hottest parts of the country. The owners are maximum fucking Jew. (Better buy that Premier Fan pass goy, you wouldn't want to stand around all day in line, would you? By the way we're increasing the price to $350 this year!)

And it's also one of the country's oldest and largest cons and they get THE best fucking guests in the country, so you choose if you want to deal with it. I went in 2014, and decided I wasn't going to spend a couple grand flying cross-country on that again, but they always make me very torn about it with the guest list.

One more thing: They're always announcing guests up to the week before the fucking con, which I will NEVER begin to understand.

You never saw Fanboy Bebop?

Studio Sokodei (also made Re-Death and Nescaflowne) fandubbed Cowboy Bebop to make a story about a group of jaded fans trekking it to AX once more. This premiered at Fanime 2001, and was shown at tons of conventions until 2004 or so, when the creators of the vid stopped having it available online, and stopped showing it altogether (out of embarrassment or shame that it wasn't as funny as they remembered it when they made it. We'll never know).

In any case, it's a fun look at con drama/history/rivalry between AX and Fanime creators as well as poking fun at oldschool vs newschool anime fans.

1-3 is the original video, 2-3 is the deleted scenes, and 3-3 is the original trailer for Fanime.

https://mega.nz/#F!VYBlkaZI!CU-QR_MBZH3AU6toqKrUnA

I decided to finally upload it, since there's no copies of it anywhere online anymore. Studio Sokodei doesn't even have it on their youtube page. Only reason I have this is because a friend of mine from my old college anime club graciously sent it to me through AIM years ago (took forever to transfer. This was long before megaupload style sites existed)

That's why it's recommended, especially for those who are currently booked at a further hotel and those who don't mind walking just a little bit. Keep in mind though, Los Angeles is pretty hot and humid at this time of year and Los Angeles Convention Center is still pretty big.

https://aws.passkey.com/event/49007480/owner/2614/list/hotels/all

Both king and queen/queen rooms at the Intercontinental are still available and most likely will continue to be available. The rooms will be the cleanest of all rooms except for maybe the Ritz Carlton.

For those who haven't managed to get a hotel they wanted:

Par Avion's block system is all sorts of messed up. Open rooms do not go to waitlist immediately, but rather show up as open slots on the site. This means that while you may be first in the waitlist, if a room opens up someone may snatch it through the website before it goes through to you. Waitlist slots are in a separate queue, and it is unknown of when rooms are added to this queue. From my experience from dealing with the Par Avion, it seems very arbitrary.

Also most people who didn't get a hotel don't know that Par Avion continually adds hotel blocks on a rolling basis. There are times when you can snatch up a room at high demand hotels such as the Residence, Lux, JW, etc when you visit the website randomly. Most people do not check for rooms after the first week. Thus, if your rooming situation is not ideal, you can occasionally check the website for additional hotel block additions as well as cancellations. This method works better than waitlisting, and many people who decide to go to AX after the hotels open find rooms this way. Keep in mind though, if you see a room that you want, do not hesitate to click on it at once as rooms may come and go by the second. You can always cancel later.

I'm pretty knowledgeable about hotel rooms and stuff, so if anyone has questions about rooming at AX or Fanime as well, feel free to ask.
