How do I go about distressing a pair of pants "diagonally", like in the top left of this image? I've looked at several distressing tutorials, but they only show how to make a boxy, squarish pattern using a scalpel to make vertical incisions, that isn't quite what I'm looking for.

Attempting a cosplay of this guy.

Why wouldn't this belong here? They're looking for techniques for their cosplay. We have help threads and tutorials here, patterns and sewing tips. How does this not fall under that category?

I don't see why this method wouldn't work for diagonal. Just make your cuts diagonal instead of horizontal.

use sandpaper.
vertical distressing like that comes naturally when an area is rubbed for a time the white horizontal yarns are the leftover from the indigo yarns being worn away.
serrated knife, or belt sander
